We're under contract to buy a house. Two weeks before closing, a contractor performing agreed-upon presale repairs caught the house on fire. We've got a lot of questions about what happens next.

I love reading
The Hunt column in the NY Times. Love watching "Location, Location, Location" (which I only get to see on cable when I'm at a hotel I travel to for work). Loved House Hunters when I saw it while overseas. I even like reading Ask Metafilter questions about where people should rent or buy when I have never even been to that city. What else would I like?

Assuming that you
could buy a house outright, for cash, why would you get a mortgage? A conversation got me researching this recently. Many articles suggest that if the interest rate is low, a mortgage is better. Yet I can't for the life of me figure out why paying low interest is better than paying no interest. A person with a 30-year mortgage usually ends up paying about 2 times the principal. School me, financial mefites.
FYI: this is just a curiosity. I'm in no position to actually do this in reality.

I am buying a house and the roof is questionable. There were missing tabs all over. A roofer came out and did minimal repairs at the current owners' expense but he says the roof has "2 to 5 years" left, maybe, depending on weather (we live in the midwest).

Do real estate sellers ever falsely claim to have a competing offer to drum up a sense of urgency and drive up your own offer? That would be really unethical, right? But is there any way to verify their claim of another offer?

I would like to buy a home. I am currently single, in my early 30s, and would like to meet someone special and have a family. Right now, I could buy something that would suit one person, a couple, and maybe a couple with a kid - but not really a "family" home. Should I buy or wait?

Radon in new home: a newly built home has tested very high for radon -- 16 in the basement and 8 on the first floor. EPA safe level is below 4. How dangerous is radon really, particularly for preschool age children, in terms of a percentage risk for developing cancer? How effective is radon remediation? What technical questions or specs should I insist on and double check? Are there any remediation methods that anyone recommends, that are particularly effective, or that would amount to overkill? Are there any remediation methods that don't work well? And good or bad side effects of radon remediation?
