Is it worth thousands of dollars to fix an inground pool? I've own my home in northern Delaware for less than a year. One of the reasons I bought this house was it had a pool. I bought the house when it was in foreclosure, so I knew there would be many repairs to do to the house, pool included. The inground pool is about 30ft by 10ft by about 7ft deep. Estimates to repair the pool liner and large filter are in the neighborhood of 5-6k.

My wife and I are buying a house in Austin, Texas ( Steiner Ranch ). We are trying to figure out how we want to finance it. We have the means to pay for the house with cash. We are being offered a mortgage at 3.6%. The cost of the house would represent about 50% of our net worth. The other 50% is fairly liquid, with an even spread between 401k, index funds, 529's, and cash. Should we do it?

Should I try to get a mortgage and buy a house before I leave my corporate-type job for a low and unreliably-paying creative one? Or is it possible I'll be able to do those things afterwards?

Selling a house and keeping the cash - my wife and I are in the midst of selling our house. When all is said and done (fees, taxes, etc all paid) we're going to get $250k. The expected thing to do is move to another house and use that money as a down payment. But we're playing around with the idea of taking the money and travelling for six months - can we?
