How to change a small office culture?

I work in an office of about 25 people, which is run by just one big boss & the hours are atrocious. I'm not the only one who thinks so, but at least 2 people have been fired in the past for daring to complain directly. How can we, the employees, either start a productive conversation with our boss about this, or somehow generate grassroots change? [more inside]

Working 9-5- still a way to make a living?

Does anyone work 9-5 anymore? (Aside from government employees, that is.) I just got a job and my hours are 8:30-5. I've noticed that many of my friends work similar hours- 8-5 or 8:30-5:30 or 9-6 or even later. Is "Working 9-5" a thing of the past?

billable hours

Mefi lawyers, how efficiently do you bill? On a day where you have no non-billable obligations, what's your ratio of hours billed to hours in the office (including lunch)? I'm at about 80% on a really good day, and I'm not sure if I should be aiming to improve that.

How to run on fumes?

I just started a second job, bringing me to 70+ hours a week. This will last until the end of September, when the first job ends. I also commute an hour each way between the jobs. I know, it's nuts. I made a committment to the first (cheesy) job. The second job pays more and has a future. And hell, I need the money. You who have worked two full-time jobs simultaneously: How did you do it? What helped? What should I watch out for? Any suggestions for me?
