Each year in the fall, my DH and I go to Ireland for his business meetings. These meetings last 3-4 days and then he takes 3 days of vacation and we go somewhere else in Europe. We have gone to Paris, the west coast of Ireland, Scotland and here is my question: When you have only 3 days, what would be the best plan of attack? [more inside]

If you were going to Washington, DC for a week and were the kind of person who likes to do the museum thing by day and go out to eat/drink/merry at night, where would you stay? I'm headed down there Mon-Thur next week and have no clue
We're going to be visiting Boston for a few days, starting tomorrow (Sunday). We'd like to avoid traffic and parking issues by staying in the outskirts and taking mass-transit into downtown to see the sights. We're looking for a hotel or motel that is pleasant, clean and fairly inexpensive (less than $125/night IF possible). Any recommendations?
I am traveling to London in October and looking for hotel recommendations. Would like wireless Internet access and private bathroom. Looking for something in the budget range of an academic traveler, but not something that is too budget. Has to be convenient to this location: The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, London, WC2E 7HA [more inside]

PortlandFilter: I'm looking for inexpensive lodgings (less than $75/night during the week) in Portland, OR, for October. I'll be exploring the city without a car, so close and easy access to public transportation is a must. Bonus question: Know any good dance clubs there? [more inside]

I'm moving from Boston to Cincinnati in a few weeks, and am doing the drive to OH on my own. I'd like to stop halfway through and stay the night - someplace not expensive, but hopefully someplace nice (to help cushion the blow of leaving 'home' for good). However, Travelocity et. al. are just giving me HoJos, Holiday Inns, etc, all for quite a bit of money per night and generally with questionable cleanliness. It seems logical to get off the highway to find a place that's not going to rip me off - but how do I find a nice, clean, mostly inexpensive place while knowing nothing about the area I'm hoping to stop (Rochester/Buffalo/Erie, PA)? Can you help? [more inside]

AcademicTravelFilter: Thanks to my habit of writing about obscure books, I need to detour to Austin TX this summer in order to read a bad Victorian triple-decker at the Harry Ransom Center, UT-Austin. As I will not have a rental car and would prefer not to die of heat stroke, I'm in search of recommendations for adequate hotels either within walking distance (I know there's a Days Inn or something similar about 1/2 mile away) or on one of the bus/shuttle lines. (This thread was illuminating about the aforementioned bus/shuttle lines, but not quite what I'm looking for.)
The lady & I want to watch some whales in Victoria BC around Memorial day. We'd like to avoid cookie-cutter-corporate hotels. We want a funky mid-price (think $100/night or so) place to stay. When we travel around Washington/Oregon, we like to stay at McMenamins. Is there anything close to that in Victoria?
Can you help us find a nice, but not too expensive, hotel in Prague for a honeymoon? [more inside]
Hotel recommendations needed for NYC. Ideally downtown. Not crazy expensive, but it's for my parents, so it needs to be fancier than a backpacker's hotel/hostel (eg, private bath, not too noisy, clean, etc). Many thanks!

I'm planning on going to SXSW this year. I'll probably stay for at least a few days, maybe a week. Where should I stay? How expensive are accommodations? How far in advance must I make reservations? Are there any popular alternatives to staying in a hotel? p.s. I don't drive.

In Slate's Explainer column today, they have the unanswered questions of 2007. Most are inscrutable, unanswerable or ridiculous... but I've wondered this one myself too many times to let it go: "Very rare to find a hotel room with a light on the ceiling, they're usually floor lamps or desk lamps. Is there some structural reason for that?" [more inside]
I'm planning a trip to New York with my girlfriend in March of 2008. We're leaving with a bus that stops at Port Authority. I'm wondering what are some moderately priced near by hotels that we could check into.

I have to be in Manhattan Dec 6th - Dec 9th. My flight is booked and my appointments are scheduled. I am flying solo. My plan was to stay in Manhattan, and goof off after my appointments. Unfortunately, every hotel in Manhattan for those days is $600+ a night. Ordinarily I can Priceline $150 and get bites, but even after a $250 bid, I got nothing on a 3 / 4 *. So......where should I stay and still be able to explore Manhattan without freezing my ass off?? I can be a bit of a snob and would prefer not to stay in something lower than 3*. Any secret Manhattan hotels that I can get into that are not sh*t holes? Brooklyn? New Jersey? Connecticut?
