We're in the beginning stages of planning a vacation to Toronto later this year. So far, all the hotels I have looked at online have been surprisingly expensive. Does anyone have suggestions for clean, safe, private (not hostels) hotels or B&Bs located either conveniently to interesting parts of the city (for tourists), or close (safe 5-10 min. walk) to public transportation to attractions?
While I am at it, while we've done some research on our own, ideas for not-to-be-missed sights, museums, bookstores, or other attractions (for a middle aged, bookish, art-museum frequenting, ethnic food loving, but only moderately-fit couple) appreciated. Thanks!

Hotel recommendations needed for NYC. Ideally downtown. Not crazy expensive, but it's for my parents, so it needs to be fancier than a backpacker's hotel/hostel (eg, private bath, not too noisy, clean, etc). Many thanks!

I'm looking for a good inn/hotel within three hours drive of San Francisco where I can have a room with a private hot tub on a deck with a view of the Pacific Ocean. Winter storm vacation!

Hotel recommendations for Vancouver B.C.? I'll be there a couple days for a wedding. My primary concerns are that it be central and unique/interesting. Any price range is fine.

Monterey or Carmel? Inexpensive weekend hotel/B&B recommendation? Preference is close to the water, less than half a mile, night life not important, yet without blowing my credit card to bits. [NMI]
