Going on a last minute trip to Portland Oct 5 through 9 and looking for a good hotel in the downtown area for my husband and self. I'm hoping to find something nice, must have wifi, under 200 (preferably closer to 100) walkable to downtown stuff, and on the quiet side.
We are there for the Guided by Voices show. I've never been to portland and have no idea what is there except they have a big bookstore I want to go to. Any suggestions for stuff to do in downtown area would be great - I will be doing more research online but I'm so tired from working since 5 am I can't stare at a screen anymore. thanks so much!

I'm staying in an Embassy Suites hotel in Chicago this week.
Today, I returned to the hotel to see that on three of the lower floors, each room had a stack of exactly two identical chairs placed outside the door. This struck me as really odd.
What does it mean? Is it some kind of code for housekeeping or management?

Physics question: A hotel room. An ice bucket. An air conditioner shooting up cold air. A fleece blanket. Put the fleece blanket over the bucket to trap the air. Hypothesis: The fleece blanket will trap the cool air around the bucket, keeping it colder longer. OR The fleece blanket will do what it always does, make things warmer. Which will be? [more inside]

How do we control the excessive taking of food in our complimentary breakfast?
My family and I own and operate a Comfort Inn. We offer a free continental breakfast: coffee, toast, bagels, frozen waffles (you just pop them into the toaster), apples, bananas and a lemon cake that we cut up into small slices.
Frequently we have people who take it upon themselves to take way more than they need. We can understand someone taking a bagel to go for later in the day but these are guests who will take 15 extra plates, half a loaf of bread (I kid you not, just empty out the sack onto a plate and then take fifteen to twenty small packets of peanut better and/or cream cheese).
My mother believes that we should place some carefully worded sign next to breakfast in the hopes that people will be considerate of others as well as management and only take what they will eat. Too often people take because they assume they have a right to take.
How could we word such a sign without insulting the guests or make them feel like we're being rude? [more inside]

Is it common practice for a small boutique hotel (a dozen rooms + a couple of penthouses) to charge you a HIGHER rate for booking all of their rooms? Their argument is that we're making it hard for them to ensure that all rooms are booked to maximum capacity for the nights immediately before and after the block of nights that I want to book. I'm going to be staying in Berlin for nearly two weeks in the summer. I need to pay hostel-style prices (10-40 euro/night), and would like to stay at a great location in a space that attracts and makes it easy to chat with interesting people (writers, artists, or just an eclectic crowd...). Don't want a heavy party atmosphere. Any hostel recommendations? And are there non-hostel accommodations I should consider?

Toronto hotels filter: I'm coming to Toronto at the end of the month for a week and need to find a (very?) nice hotel no more than two blocks away from Bloor Street (at about Yonge or so - I think the area is called Yorkville but I'm not sure) at a reasonable price. We're two adults, one shopping and one working, and one baby and the prices we've found so far are quite insane ($500+ per night). Thanks!
