I'm heading up to the northern California coast over Labor Day - will I need to book accommodation ahead of time? (Also, what shouldn't I miss along the way?)

I'll be traveling around the states with my family in August and I'm looking for a good hotel in California, somewhere around LA and San Francisco. It has to be close to, or more preferably own a good beach. I was looking at some resorts in Santa Barbara, but maybe there are some other nice places to stay in.

Have I got the right budget for my LA->SF drive? What are the hotels / motels really like? Are there any "bargain" towns or price blackspots?

My family and I want to stay in Big Bear, CA for a couple of nights this winter (to ski). While I'm willing to sleep pretty much anywhere, others are not.
What's the nicest hotel up there?

We are driving from LA to a wedding in Oakland, CA, in a few weekends. The reception will end around 9pm, and we are looking for a place to stay somewhere south of Oakland for one night. Any suggestions? The cooler the better.

Please recommend an interesting hotel or B&B in the Angels Camp / Murphys, California area. Also looking for things to do in the area after exploring Moaning Caverns. Other caves? Hot springs?

My wife is driving with a friend and out 11-yr old god-daughter from our home in Sacramento down to San Diego, leaving Sunday evening. They expect to be near San Luis Obispo when it's time to pull over and go to sleep. Can anyone suggest a good, interesting, fun or otherwise worthy hotel/motel/inn/b&b in the area?
I hate to ask 2 questions in one day, but you are all so very helpful! Please forgive me.
