When I make instant hot chocolate, the directions always say to put the hot chocolate mix into the mug and then pour hot (not boiling) water on top. This does seem to produce better results than stirring the mix into hot water, although that might be confirmation bias. Does this actually work better? Why? [more inside]

My SO's older son will be 17 in the fall. I want to give him something that will provide a nominal income for him as he won't be able to work due to the requirements of his college. Options I am considering are: a greeting card business with some other members of his family; helping to run a summer camp; performing songs about stuff on Spotify; and; having an interest in a hot dog stand. I think hot dog stand is probably the most available option, followed by greeting cards. Problem is sourcing high quality franks in England. Sweden? I would rather they be all-beef than pork, and there being a halal or kosher option.

I am convinced - or I've convinced myself - that there was an xkcd diagram that showed winter as unbearably cold and long, summer as unbearably hot and long, and a very short burst of spring and autumn where temperatures were just right. Does this actually exist, or is it some other cartoon, or have I imagined something as real?

I like mild to moderately spicy dishes (crispy chilli beef, jalfrezi, chilli-tomato pasta sauce), but anything hotter numbs my mouth to the point where I can't actually taste anything, or worse, unable to eat it. Even if I go to Nandos, I don't want to try anything hotter than the mild piri-piri, because I'm worried I won't enjoy my meal due to the heat. Can I 'train' myself into getting used to spices? And does a higher tolerance enable the flavours, rather than the heat, to come through?

I'm caught in a casual, hot and cold relationship with a person I fell in love with years ago. I can't tell anymore what is normal relationship behavior. I'm a female in my 20's, involved with a person in his 40's. We have similar sensibilities and get along great but then he goes cold. He always let's me decide if I want to stay or not. Everytime I leave, I end up coming back because I miss him and I'm greeted with enthusiasm. He's a sweetheart and never acted aggressively towards me which leaves me confused. 'Cause he'll go out of his way to help me with anything I need and once I get comfortable and thankful, he grows cold. He never saw us as "dating" even though we were plus the issues of him getting over an ex. I can be a bit of a people pleaser at times but I always abide by the rule of if you don't want to be with someone and they have strong feelings for you, you cease contact. He doesn't do this and I'm confused. I feel like a puppet. I don't know what's going on in his head. I don't even know if it's abusive or not. I have been in an abusive relationship and this doesn't mirror it so I'm having a tough time processing what's going on. Please help.

There was a huge lightning storm this morning, in the middle of it my power went out.
All the breakers on my boat are on, all e breakers on the power bollard are on.
The odd thing is that the bollard has power to the meters and register 5v on the ac setting of my multimeter across live and earth.
Also the RCD buttons trip out the breakers. This suggests that it has power. But nothings coming out.
Any ideas for
a) How come it has some power but no output
b) Is there anything I can do.
My electrical skills = I own a nice multimeter

My girlfriend and I are going to Portland next week for the first time, and had been planning to take a day to drive out to the Bagby Hot Springs (she was thrilled when she found out they're the springs featured in Old Joy
). Upon researching further, I discovered that it doesn't have the greatest reputation in terms of safety. But, much of what I read was from years ago, and it's difficult to an find up-to-date state of things. For those who have been there recently, is it a reasonably safe trip? [more inside]

I love making my own hot pepper sauces but I'm not happy that I have to use vinegar as a preservative as I don't like the sour taste that much. If I use a lot, it ruins the taste, if I use less, the sauce won't stay fresh as long. Does anyone have a recommendation for something I can substitute the vinegar with, maybe even something synthetic (if it's harmless)?
