help me create a portfolio website that doesn't scream "student work"!

I'm an independent graphic artist looking to create a simple but not amatuerish-looking portfolio website to showcase my work. And because of my limited budget, I pretty much have to do it myself. However, I'm having trouble getting started because there's so much information out there, a lot of it conflicting, out-of-date, too specific, or too general. Please help me do this right! Tell me about hosting audio on the web.

Posted for a friend: Do you use a digital service provider to host audio content on the web? If so, who do you use, and why? I'm looking to put up some audio books for someone- a 14 cd set, in fact. I've found a few providers (Avatar, IDEA, Virtual Label) but, beyond that, I don't even know where to start. How do I go about doing this, who are the best providers, and where can I find additional information?

Pinched Pelican Problem

Is it acceptable for a website to reproduce around 20 images on their front page, approximately 150k each, from our website while keeping them hosted on our server? I've never really understood the etiquette or protocol in this situation, but our bandwidth suddenly doubled and it obviously wasn't hard to find out who the culprit was. There seems little point in linking to the sites in question, but what have others done in this situation? Thanks in advance.

Lost in landing page hosting SEO strategies

Our client (Switzerland-based, but internationally operating) currently has companyname.ch as their main site. That's where all their sites' content is hosted. We've also set up companyname.ca and companyname-keyword.com for their international operations. Those sites are just one index.html page where all links then go to "companyname.ch/page=pageid&locale=ca" for the canadian site and "companyname.ch/page=pageid&from=com" for the keyworded site. We recently moved the canadian site's hosting from our servers in Switzerland to a Canada-based host for (minute) SEO reasons. Questions follow... [more inside]

Considerations when adding a periodic email update function to my website (with PHP's mail() function)

Share your IT infrastructure, hosting and version control thoughts for web development firms?

I work for a small web development company. As we are growing, I have been tasked with looking at a few pieces of our business: - Version Control (Currently we don’t do it. We’re starting to use Subversion at my recommendation) - Development Environments (We don’t exactly have formalized dev/stage/production right now, more like just dev/production…) - Hosting (How we host our different clients varies… too much… we need a good solution) - Infrastructure (i.e. how we host our own email, how we back up our data) I already have some thoughts and recommendations, but they’re based on my personal experiences, so I thought I’d see what other experiences are out there and find out what other people/companies are doing… [more inside]

NetSol, .Mac or other host for .ca domains?

My friends have a webhosting account with Network Solutions. NetSol seems to be saying that you cannot point a .ca domain-name to that account. Is that really true? Are .Mac accounts compatible with .ca domains? If the answer to both is no, can you recommend a webhost for .ca domains? (They have already bought the domain.) [NB: I don't want to just use a page forwarder - that is, I want www.mysite.ca/blogs/newblog etc urls to work.] Thanks!
