Who should I go through to buy a domain name? New to this part of internet-dom. (Both using MetaFilter and owning digital real estate) My plan is to have a domain name where I can post my as-yet-nonexistant blog as well as build my own personal brand. Are there any suggestions for a newbie as to who I should go through to buy the domain? A friend has offered me hosting space, but any advice on that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!

Flickr is perfectly fine, but I hate that it switches up photo URLs/servers, so photos I post on my blog turn into 'photo not available.' Since that's what I mainly use it for, it's getting to be a pain. What do I switch to? [more inside]

Comparing VPS vs. Shared Server performance. Are there some ways to compare server performance on a couple of hosting accounts I have. I'm interested in seeing how much better the VPS account performs and then deciding if that's worth the extra monthly charge. Or the inverse: is the shared server account adequate. [more inside]

Does anyone have a good recommendation for Windows-based ASP hosting? After googling for awhile, it's difficult to find reviews and information online on which hosting companies to avoid or to use. Specifically, I need IIS 6.0 and ASP (not .NET) with MS Access. I haven't decided whether to use dedicated hosting or not, but will consider either for this app. Just looking for a good reliable company with good customer service and uptime.

I've been invited to emcee a gala dinner for a nonprofit. They are paying me for my talents, but I don't have anything other than random guesses about how much to charge, and their initial offer was basically "money is no object," which actually make it harder for me. Are there any resources out there that can help me narrow down a range to work from?

I have a website with the domain registered via namecheap, and the hosting via NearlyFreeSpeech. The setup works fine for static content, but I'd like to get a tumblr blog that can be reached via my domain. Is this possible with this setup, or is the best I can hope for a link from a site hosted online? [more inside]

Argh, someone linked to a web host that happened to have a $10 a year price for basic hosting (Like ASmallOrange's $25 yr plan.) I can't find that link after looking at a bunch of answers! Not pay as you go like NFS. Anyone know that $10 year host that was mentioned? Or an alternative with PHP and MySQL for similar price? [more inside]

The company I work for is moving its data storage and processing to the cloud—with the exception of the intranet (which the company’s currently paying to be hosted). There’s a feeling that the intranet should be kept separate from the company’s other documents. What are the options for free intranet hosting? Does such a thing even exist? The current system is very basic, and we really just need 200-300 files (Word, Excel, pdf) to be available in simply displayed categories in an area accessible by staff. Any suggestions?

Client requested a single page website. Same client has bought himself a shiny new domain name - www.client.com. Given likely very low volume of hits, I propose hosting that single page under my existing Apache-enabled webspace - www.existing.com/client. How do I set things up such that Google results show client's domain and not my own? Thanks!

Multiple domains- I know how to forward them.
I could start a Google account for each.
But I'd really like to get the email to forward instead? I want it to be that you send an email to (anything) email@example.com and it ends up going to my main domain/email account.

What is the hands-down cheapest
way to store a large amount of data online: say 100GB with say 100GB transfer per month?
Bandwidth and transfer limit aren't a priority as long as media files can be streamed right away any time.
Why? Because we would all like to put our music collections online.
The lowest I've found is about 10 cents per gigabyte.

We're sending out about 55,000 postcards to members of our organization. Those postcards direct them to visit a brand-new website for information on a new program. Assuming that all 55,000 members have at least some interest in the new program (which they likely do, or they wouldn't pay for the membership in the first place) what kind of website traffic should we be prepared to handle during that first week? What specific hosting package (vendor and package name) would you suggest we buy to best absorb the traffic for this project.
