HostingFilter: (no not the geeky kind...) I just got a job as a host in a franchised restaurant. I know food and wine, but I don't know 'people' or restaurants. As a customer, what would you like to see more (or less!) of when you're being greeted and seated? Any helpful tips from service veterans? [more inside]

I will soon be distributing a bunch of large scientific and research datasets, all entirely legal for redistribution, many as large as a few gigabytes. Bittorrent is the best solution for this. Many respectable webhosting sites don't allow Bittorrent trackers; too many of those that do seem fly-by-night. I have a budget for this and want something respectable and reliable. Recommendations? I am running a free Web-based service for friends and acquaintances. Lately, the volume on this service has been growing greatly. The next step is to move the service to a professional host. I am thinking of putting a paypal donation button on the site to help pay for it. Are there any legal or tax issues I need to worry about? Do I need a business license? What if I want to start selling Cafe Press items or running Google ads? I am located in the USA.

My current host is closing down, and since I bought my domain through them it will be transferred into my name before they finally close at the end of the year. However, my domain expires on December 12, and they are so far unresponsive to my emails and have not transferred the domain (it has been two weeks since my initial request). I am worried that if I'm not able to renew it, it will be snapped up by a domain-sitter and I will lose it. In case it isn't transferred in time, is there a way I can beat the domain-sitters to it and reserve my domain? What are the more affordable options for doing this? Will I be guaranteed to get it?

Webhosting uptime. What's reasonable to expect from at $10/month hosting package? I'm hosted by netacore and by my count, my domain has been down about six times this year, for an average of about a day at a time. [more inside]

Since web hosting companies tend to come and go like ships on the tide, I would like ">to revisit this question ... with a few alterations. I want the price to stay below $10 a month, possibly even under $5. Instead of 20mb of space, I want 500mb or more. Also, I want PHP, MySql, CGI scripting, FTP, webmail, etc ... and if their servers run on Apache, then all the better. Any recommendations?

Why does bandwidth cost anything? Short of hosting companies finding a means to make some money, what is the actual cost justification on charging for overages, etc? Is it a racket or does traffic actually put an expense on an ISP forcing them, in turn, to charge customers? Always wondered. Thanks.

A family member of mine wants to set up a simple site for his home business - schedules of classes, some photographs, contact information, links, etc., and I have suggested that he use Typepad, which I use for a number of projects. However I think he'd prefer a non-weblog format, which leads me to my question: are there combined hosting/construction tools out there, like some of these weblog services, that have a good and very easy-to-use back-end, lots of design/format choices, but are more focused around a more heirarchically structured, top-down site structure?

I've found the most incredible page on angelfire that just has to be shown to Metafilter. The problem is, well, it's angelfire...

The author is a russian woman who gives no contact details on her website. I'd love to share it with MeFi, but mirroring the images seems potentially dangerous. Thoughts?

Domain names are fun! My company has over 60 domain names with two main registars - Valueweb and Network Solutions. I would like to have all domains under one roof. Who would you transfer domains too and why? I find dealing with these companies very confusing.

A permutation of this question has been asked previously, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with free subdomain hosts. I need to run a forum-type (probably YaBBS-based) site for next eight months only, so I don't need a yearly package and I'd prefer to not spend a dime if possible, but I don't want it littered with pop-ups and banners either. Ideas or leads?
