Honolulu off the beaten path?

So kid has a babysitter and the wife and I have a date night tonight in Honolulu. Lived here for five years, looking for something different to experience. We're not looking for tourist/Waikiki stuff or loud, crowded Chinatown clubs. Any suggestions? Mahalo!

Where can we store our bagging in Honolulu for 12 hours before our flight home?

Returning from Hawaiian honeymoon on the Big Island. We're flying out of Honolulu, but we're on Oahu for about 12 hours before the flight back home. Airline only allows baggage check in 4 hours before departure. Is there anywhere we can safely store our baggage so we don't have to lug it around all day? Honeymoon in Hawaii in August. Spending most of the time on the Big Island, but we're flying back to Vancouver out of Honolulu.

Air Canada only has one flight back to Vancouver per day and it's at 11 PM at night. Their website says baggage check in can only be 4 hours before departure.

Our inter-island flight gets into Honolulu about noon. We'd like to go around Honolulu, but don't want to lug our bags around while doing so. Since we are not staying on Oahu, we don't have a hotel we can leave our bags with. Safety of our bags is pretty important.

Any ideas where we can safely leave our stuff? We travel relatively light, but it's still more than we'd like to carry around all day if we could.

Honolulu vacation rentals?

My boyfriend and I just booked a flight to Honolulu for the first week of May and now we need to find accommodations. We're hoping to find a week-long rental somewhere within the city to use as a home base, spend most of our time at the beach and/or exploring nearby tourist-y sites via public transit, and maybe rent a car for just a couple days. I've had a look at the other ask.me questions about Honolulu but we have some pretty specific requirements that aren't really covered in those.

Our ideal place would be:
- around $100 US a night
- equipped with a kitchen
- walking distance to a beach that has decent waves for surfing
- a short walk or bus ride to a grocery store or farmer's market

We don't need anything super-fancy - a basic studio or one bedroom apartment would suit us just fine. We might be willing to pay more for somewhere *really* nice though.

I'm checking out the usual suspects (TripAdvisor, VRBO, craigslist) but would love to hear personal recommendations from anyone who has stayed in the area before.

1930s Hawaii address, where is it?

How do I find the modern geographical location of an old Hawaii address that no longer exists? I'm looking for the present day location of a Hawaiian address that appears in the 1930 census.

The address is 2483 East Manor Road, Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory.

How do I find the geographical location of this address, and possibly the address of the building today, if it exists?

Photography in Hawaii

Suggestions for places to take interesting photos in Honolulu/Oahu over Christmas I will be in Honolulu over Christmas for a (large) family vacation. This trip is a bit last minute for me and I have not had much time to read up. I was last in Hawaii about 25yrs ago now.

I am an amateur photographer and I am looking for suggestions of places to take some interesting (not the usual tourist) pictures anywhere on Oahu. I prefer exteriors/landscapes/nature photography but neat or interesting architecture is fine as well. I will have a car for the entire time I am there and definitely want to get out of Honolulu and around the island. I will a have a lot of my gear (tripod etc). Any thoughts or suggestions? (if you can link to Google Maps, even better) Thanks.

Suggestions and tips for an 11-hour layover in Honolulu (HNL), coming from Japan, heading to Portland? Mr. Fascinated and I will be traveling home to Portland, Oregon from Osaka, Japan tomorrow. We land in Honolulu at 11AM; the HNL-PDX flight takes off at 10PM.

What is there to do in Honolulu considering our schedule? Our time in Japan has been grueling, so "relaxing" would be preferable over more sightseeing. I'd love to go to the beach, but which one? And how do we get there from the airport?

How can we avoid carrying our big suitcases with us? Will it be possible to re-check them immediately, so long before the flight out?

Anything else I should know?

Where should we live in Honolulu?

What can you tell me about Honolulu neighborhoods? In January, I posted a question to Ask Metafilter to help my girlfriend and I decide if we were going to move to Honolulu. We've decided to go for it! Now, we're trying to figure out where exactly in Honolulu would be the best place for us to live. The answers to our first question were so helpful that I thought I'd return to Ask Mefi for more advice.

My girlfriend will be working in Upper Manoa, right by the Manoa Marketplace. Ideally, we want to live somewhere that has public transportation that will get her there, although it isn't a make-or-break litmus test. (I will be working from home.)

We're both artsy, urban types. Being within walking distance of lots of interesting things to do would be ideal. Money is, of course, an issue, but we've both lived in Boston so we won't collapse into sobbing hysterics at rents that would be considered insane in many places. Safety is also, of course, an issue, but we're not paranoid about living near other humans.

I liked Chinatown when we briefly visited, and was wondering about it (and the neighborhoods maybe north of it if it turned out to be too expensive right there.) My girlfriend has said she's heard potentially good things about Kaimuki. Can you tell us anything about those, or any other neighborhoods you think we might be interested in? Public transportation, rents, safety, interesting area to be in, anything else?

Resources and anectdotes related to Feline HIV

Seeking resources and anecdotes related to Feline HIV My mom's cat was just diagnosed with Feline HIV, and she is just devastated. She feels like it is her fault because she let him go out, and he got in a fight (which, it turns out, is the most common way for it to be transmitted).

To make matters worse, the vet told her there was nothing she could do to treat him or manage the condition, and they sent her home without even disinfecting the wound he had on his neck (which was her original reason for the visit). They also harassed her about her responsibility to not infect other cats while she was crying. He is obviously going to live indoors from now on.

From what I've been able to google (http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/fiv.html, http://cats.about.com/cs/healthissues/a/fiv_in_cats.htm), There is no cure. But, there are certainly lots of things she can do to keep him from getting sicker and to prolong his quality of life. One of the main things is quick treatment of secondary illnesses, so I am pretty dubious about this vet too.

I'm looking for reliable resources on FIV management, and anecdotes from kitty moms and dads who have been there.

Bonus points for someone who can recommend a compassionate, capable vet in the Honolulu area! (She is currently at VCA in Kaneohe).

Should we move to Honolulu?

My SO has gotten a job offer in Honolulu. Should we go? I know that many will have the immediate impulse to reply, "Yes - are you stupid?", but we do have some concerns I was hoping to get some advice about, especially from people who live there, have lived there, or have spent extended amounts of time there.

Both of us are active in the arts, espcially small-scale, shoestring budget local stuff (I'm a theatrical director, she's a dancer), and we are both wondering what the scene is like there. We've also heard troubling reports of racial tensions from friends who have been there. On the other hand - it's Honolulu! On the other other hand, we really like where we live now (Tucson, Arizona). On the other other other hand, it's a really good job.

As you can see, we've been tying ourselves in knots about it. This would be a big move for both of us, and we only have a few weeks to decide if we're going to do it, so we're feeling rather stressed about it.

Single activities in paradise?

A week in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawai'i. All expenses paid. Solo. What the hell do I do until Saturday? Obviously, there's I travel for a living, and my job currently has me in Honolulu until Saturday. I'm staying on Waikiki. Sounds great, yeah? It would be, except that my girlfriend isn't here, and I have no friends in HI. Normally, I seek out all the hippest vegetarian restaurants, catch a play or other indie production, and haunt cool local coffeeshops in whatever city I'm in, which is all great to do solo in a city like Chicago or Nashville. The vibe here, it seems, is markedly different.

I'm reticent to do the "typical" touristy things like catch a lounge act or go on a tour, both because I want to "save" that sort of stuff for when I come back with my girl, and also because I don't think I'd enjoy it very much while alone. I could go bar-hopping, but I'm not interested in picking up girls for a deep, meaningful one-night relationship. I could lay out on the beach (and I plan to!), but I would like my memories to be more substantial than the same stuff I can do in Florida.

So, hive mind, I deplore you, what's a young, not-single guy to do with his free week in Hawai'i? I can only take so much of my coworkers/supervisors/clients.

Honolulu to Haleiwa?

Honolulu to Haleiwa tomorrow morning. Any ground transportation options (for one person) other than the $75 cab ride? thebus.org shows one route (52) to Haleiwa, but no clear way to get to that line from the airport. That site also suggests I can't ride with my two bags (one small suitcase + one large tote bag) - any options not immediately apparent? The $75 rate is from Star Taxi, which the internet suggests is the cheapest.

Day Classes in Honolulu/Oahu?

Day classes in/around Honolulu/Oahu or other immersive activities for the loner? (and yes, I realize this is remarkably close to rkent's below question, tho see also the MI...) Unlike rkent's slant, I'm running very nearly the opposite. This is my third week in Hawaii this year (one week in Jan and this past week) and I'm about beach/ocean/natured out. Also, having circumnavigated now two islands and their attendant mountains, that's pretty well rutted as well.

To further complicate things, while I enjoy museums and the like, I don't much enjoy them solo and I'll be a conference widower Sun-Tue of this coming week. I'm also "fussy to shop for" as I'm not much of a joiner or randomly sociable.

In doing my due-dilligence through Axe, I found a handful of references to classes one might be able to take, day-class stylee. Specifically uke classes and local cooking caught my eye but I'm unable to whack anything other than macrobiotic/gourmet cooking. Classes sounded up my alley, especially those of a uniquely local nature as they were totally immersive and rather solo-oriented, both exactly what I was looking for but I'm game for other suggestions. I'll also be checking in on rkent's thread (which I didn't want to derail) to see what pops up there and to drop any fresh knowledge I pick up on the streets.

Moving to Honolulu

I'm seriously thinking about moving to Honolulu in a few months. [omnidesire] I visited the city several years ago, and liked it very much, but won't have time to do an exploratory visit before I pack up and move there. Specifically, my questions are:
- How does one go about finding a small, nice, not-too-expensive apartment in Honolulu? (I figure I'd start looking around the UH campus ... ? A cursory search in the classifieds section of the Honolulu Advertiser tells me only that the classifieds section of the Honolulu Advertiser is not very helpful.)
- Does Honolulu have a local "arts" weekly newspaper with a decent classifieds section?
- Is it a bike-able city?
- How expensive is it to live there, really? Hawaii has a rep for being super-costly, but my recollection was that prices were a little bit higher than usual, but not horrifically so. (Of course, I grew up in Westchester County, NY...)
- Can you recommend specific areas of town for someone who loves movies and music, likes to hang out amongst young(ish) people, wants to simplify his life by relying on bikes and buses instead of cars, and desires a ready supply of fresh pineapple?

And if you've ever lived in Honolulu, any general or specific tips about setting up shop in that city would be greatly appreciated.

Muchas gracias, todos.

Day in Waikiki

travelfilter: I'm going to a conference in Hawaii, in Honolulu, and I'll be staying in a hotel around Waikiki. I've been looking for cool things to do on my free day, but I keep coming across some really frightening touristy stuff, like short cruises that include Ukulele lessons and Lei (sp?) construction.

Everyone recommends the Polynesian Cultural Studies Center, and a visit to Pearl Harbor, but what else is there to do that is somewhat off the beaten path, fun and not too expensive? Any good bands out there?

additional variables: I can't really swim that well. I'm a doughy white guy approaching his 40s. I'd like to avoid activities that would piss off my wife, and I don't drink. Yes, Hawaii is wasted on me.
