July Honeymoon in Maine?

What are some good places to Honeymoon on the east coast? See explanation. My fiance and I are getting married in early June and want to go on our honeymoon somewhere in the northeast, near Maine. We would like to be near a beach but also near mountains for hiking and sightseeing. We would definitely like to stay in a private cabin with an affordable rate, near a cute little town that isn't too touristy but still has things to do.

Any ideas? I also hear that North/South Carolina have some neat places, so anywhere on the east coast would work, but we were thinking Maine for the mild weather.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!

What must we do in Tenerife next week?

What shouldn't we miss in Tenerife Oct. 21 - 28? The very-soon-to-be-Mrs. and I are headed to Adeje for our honeymoon next week. We don't have much planned, and don't want to plan very much, but it would be nice to have a reference list of things we could do while we're there. At the moment we don't plan on getting a car but I'm not averse to renting one if it's the best way to get across the island to the most awesome thing ever. So, what really interesting things would we regret not seeing or doing while we're there? We like nature, food, shopping, swimming, seeing things we would never see at home...probably lots of other things as well. Just not clubbing.

We pretty much don't speak Spanish - we can read signs or find a doctor in an emergency but fail at anything more than a few broken words and gestures.

NYE: Paris. Suggestions?

New Year's Eve in Paris. Suggestions? A long-belated honeymoon will find me and my wife in Paris for New Year's this year. We've decided this is the perfect opportunity for a (relatively) expensive, multi-course feast in a great restaurant. Nothing too fancy (we're students) but we like food, and we want this to be an experience. It needs to be somewhere we can walk to (staying in Marais near the Picasso Museum on Rue Thorigny), and we will eventually end up at the champs elysees. Looking to spend no more than 130 euro a person, unless this is laughable for what we're asking.

Where to send the little sister/new bride in Reykjavik?

My younger sister is getting married. As the older brother/groomsman, I'm looking for something special to do for a wedding present...and they're honeymooning in Reykjavik. They'll be in Reykjavik in early December for about 6 days, staying at the same hotel the whole time. Rather than getting a nice juicer, I'd like to send them somewhere cool, but I'm having trouble finding interesting stuff that I can book from here (I've never been there). Since it's closing in on the winter solstice, I'm wondering if there are some neat/romantic Northern Lights tours I could send them on, or some sort of sleigh ride dinner, or something in that vein. They're not big wine connoisseurs or foodies, though they'd appreciate good stuff if that was part of it (they're both 23).

Money's not so much of an object (within reason, natch), but I'd like for it to be special, romantic, and (above all) memorable. Thanks!

Where to go for a July 2010 Honeymoon?

Where should we go for a honeymoon in early July of next year? We are leaning towards something all-inclusive. We've considered places in Mexico near Mayan ruins and such. Something with some history and touristy places to visit that we normally won't have an opportunity to see. On the other hand, we're willing to consider all other locations. Nothing is really off the table at this point. Dates will be the end of June beginning of July for 10-14 days. Neither of us are well-travelled and on a budget. We would prefer to stay in one location (so resorts are a definite interest) and have maybe $5k for the two of us. What suggestions do you have and what locations should we definitely avoid?

Maldives on a budget?

Maldives on a budget? Say, late June or July 2010? Assuming the starting point is Chennai or Bangalore, India. Airfare doesn't seem too bad. It's a trip for 2.

Any personal experience with these islands? Budget means like having $2000 to get to the Maldives from India.

The internet seems to suggest that spending any less than $1000/day means living in a slum. That doesn't sound right, there has to be a mid-range option right?

Again, personal experience would be great.

Wedding grift

My fiancee and I are getting married next year, and since money is tight, we thought it would be a good idea to get the guests to contribute to paying for our honeymoon rather than buying material things. What is the best way to set this up? I was thinking of setting up a website and then having a PayPal option, but it looks like PayPal will take a 3.4% + £0.20 commission, which would be painful!

There are other websites I know of that allow donations etc... but these seem to be American only, and for charitable activities (rather than selfish, decadent ones!)

Any thoughts oh great MeFiMind?

Emergency honeymoon bookings. In Scotland. Two weeks from today. Oh, help. The lovely, fancy, Relais & Chateaux Scottish estate at which my soon-to-be-husband and I were to spend the first 5 days of our honeymoon just called to say they're ceasing operations 3 days from now.

We're sad, as you might imagine, with all the planning and saving and anticipating for naught. SO! We obviously need to make alternate arrangements immediately. Any recommendations for a similar place? I have browsed the recent threads.

(Details & needs: Beginning 9 September; within a few hours of both Edinburgh and our later destination near Oban; small; luxury; dreamy; excellent chef)

Many, many thanks for any and all ideas.

Las vegas honeymoon film?

Help me find this film: a couple get married in vegas, and spend there honeymoon there. The new wife then gambles away their savings in a (drunk?) craze. I remember watching the start of this movie on TV a good while ago, probably late 90s. I seem to remember Tom Hanks being the husband, but a look through his filmography yields nothing. If I recall correctly, it's a romance/comedy/drama style film. You know the one.

I only saw the first 15-20 minutes, which makes things harder again. Any help is much appreciated.

Would you do your honeymoon the same way all over again?

Should we delay our honeymoon until the fall/winter, or take it in June immediately after our wedding? What did you do? Would you do it again? We're planning on getting married the end of May next year and at first we assumed that we would immediately take our honeymoon, but then we thought about how much we love the summer at home and how the places we'd most like to travel on our honeymoon (i.e. India) are much more enjoyable in the winter, and how by winter we'll crave sunshine, but in June we won't need it as much. So now we're thinking about maybe taking a few days after the wedding to stay in a nice hotel and relax, but postponing the honeymoon until more like January.

I like the idea of traveling in India, say, in the winter, and it feels like a waste to me to take a big vacation anywhere in the summer. But on the other hand, I do want us to experience that special and unique "honeymoon," feeling - I imagine there's some new excitement (first time calling each other 'husband' and 'wife'), extra romance, relief after the whirlwind of the wedding etc. I'm not sure if it's worth waiting six months and maybe missing out on that unique experience.

We're travelers, so we have already been on several adventures together and intend to go on several more, so I'm not sure what would distinguish this other than that it would be nicer, longer (we're shooting for 4 weeks) and more exotic than we usually do.

I can weigh the pros and cons, but I'm interested in what you did, and if you would do it over again.

Buenos Aires 12-Day Honeymoon Itinerary Help

Booked flight to Buenos Aires for $287! Now I need help planning our 12 day honeymoon in South America. Have advice? At $119 before taxes, roundtrip LAX-EZE, I couldn't pass this one up. We're flying into and out of Buenos Aires, Argentina, but what happens in between is TBD. I've read some other posts here that have given me some basic ideas, but I wanted to see if anybody else wanted to contribute. Some details about us:

+ Arriving 9/30, Departing 10/11
+ We want our honeymoon to be split between Adventurous and Relaxing
+ Adventurous could be: Scuba diving, Horseback Riding, Hiking, Volcanoes, Rafting, even Camping, very open to suggestions
+ Relaxing could be: Lying on a Beach, Being Pampered in a Beautiful Hotel, Sipping Umbrella Drinks, Spa Treatments, Picturesque Pools/Hot Tubs, Breathtaking Unique Hotel Rooms/Locations, Typical Honeymoon Stuff
+ We love exploring and getting to know local people and places. We are averse to large group tours with other Americans.
+ I speak solid Spanish, lived in Spain for 6 months.
+ We couldn't care less about shopping as a vacation activity
+ While we can appreciate museums, we prefer stunning natural attractions
+ We are looking forward to exploring local food and wine (we're carnivorous). Steak, pizza and ice cream are already on our list, specific recommendations always welcome.

We do need to be budget conscious. Can't give a specific budget yet, plus some wedding guests may contribute to our honeymoon. We can probably afford to splurge a little on a few hotel nights to get the Honeymoon experience, but we can't do $300/night the whole trip.

My thinking is to splurge on the "Relaxing" portion of the trip, figuring the adventurous part could be at places like Estancias and other more "roughing it" (less expensive?) accommodations, but I'm open to suggestions.

Besides itinerary suggestions for how to spend 12 days in South America, I'm also looking for specifics about travel within the continent. I've read buses are better than trains, but for flights are there particular places to find deals? In Europe we use RyanAir or EasyJet, which don't come up on Kayak. Is there a similar option in S.A?

Attending a futbol game in Spain was awesome, any advice for attending a game in S.A?

We're thinking Uruguay and Brazil are possibilities. Chile? While we want to see BsAs and Rio de Janeiro, we'd also like to experience life outside the big cities. Is it going to be too cold to lay out on the beach somewhere?

Thanks so much in advance!

Cheap Honeymoon from the Southeast?

Where to honeymoon? Budget <$1000 all-inclusive, marriage mid-May next year, duration <5-7 days, starting location = Columbia, SC. Future Wife and I are getting married mid-May next year and don't know what/where to do about a honeymoon.

[I take that back. We know that we want to honeymoon in Japan--that has always been our one dream--but we don't have the money for it and won't for at least five years/longer if children. (We need to buy a house/rent because we currently live with our parents separately, have ~$40,000 in student loans together, two aging cars, no savings, and relatives who are unable to contribute financially. We are collectively only making ~$40,000 a year and our credit is pretty much nonexistent. Given that we will be paying for a modest wedding as well, Japan seems pretty out of reach.)]

So what should we do? We're both pretty adventurous, we enjoy city and natural environments and have vacationed (with relatives) in Asheville, Charlotte, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We enjoyed all of it so long as there was Something To Do (shopping, short nature walks, sightseeing, culture/local attractions, etc.)

I mention these places because She has mentioned that She would like to do something "different" together. I agree. We just don't know what "different" is. That's where you come in!

What warm, relaxing, beach destination (probably in Europe) do you recommend that will be easily accessible from Dublin via RyanAir (or other low-cost carrier) this coming September?
Seeking the perfect lakeside cabin in the Adirondacks for my Honeymoon.

Looking to rent a lakeside cabin in the Adirondacks this August for a week-long honeymoon get-away. Overwhelmed by the size of the 'dacks and seeking recommendations for a romantic, yet affordable area with great scenery and access to a variety of outdoor activities. - We are both down-to-earth types so the amenities can be scarce (but still comfortable);
- Privacy is important
- Proximity to a downtown type area with a few dining options would be nice but not entirely necessary
- Definitely interested in hiking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, etc.
- Our budget is capped around $1500 for the week, although if it was the perfect place, we might consider going slightly higher.

Any specific or general suggestions from more experienced travelers would be greatly appreciated!

Ideas for our Luna de Miel

The soon-to-be Ms. Deathalicious and I are planning to honeymoon in Mexico...in August. What are some out of the way, cool (as in tempurature), and romantic places to visit? I'm aware that most of the country can be very very hot, so we're thinking that it would be better to stay inland and higher up (in the Central Mexican Plateau, say). We have a little over a week to visit, and we're not fast travelers, so ideally we'd stick to just 2-3 locations maximum.

Our original plan was just to chill in Mexico City. We've already bought the plane tickets. But now we're concerned that it won't be relaxing enough for a honeymoon, so we were thinking to stay somewhere outside of the city but in the general area (that is, no more than a 4-6 hour trip by bus).

I'm opening this up to pretty much any and all Mexico-related travel recommendations (cool towns, hotels, restaurants, sights, things to buy), keeping the general region in mind. I'm particularly interested in recommendations of small-to-medium towns or cities that would make a nice long term (4-5 day) base. As an example, a friend of ours recommended Mikulov when we traveled in the Czech Republic and it was great -- almost no tourists, friendly people, a few good restaurants, some nice hills to hike through, a nearby cave system, and a few nice winding roads. In France through a happy accident we ended up in Pau, which had a lovely castle/fort, excellent food, beautiful views, another nearby cave, and decent transport to other nearby attractions.

Here are things that I like. Not all are necesary but any or all would be awesome:

Markets

I love, love, love both street and covered markets. I love seeing beautiful produce piled up but also dig piles of fish, cheese, bread, and even the occasional offal. The future Ms. D is into arts & crafts, so those markets are key too.

Plenty of street food, and good food in general

I like all kinds of Mexican food and expect I would eat well anywhere, but areas particularly known for the cuisine would be great. Ideally no matter where we were in the city, we'd never be more than a 10 or 15 minute walk from tasty food. Only drawback is I don't eat pork but for my own sanity I'm going to be avoiding the meat only and pretending they cook with vegetable oil. Other than that, I'll eat chicken, beef, and goat and we both really love fish.

Variety of beautiful architecture

I like everything from ruins to modern architecture, especially made of materials like stone, concrete, and wood (in other words I'm slightly less into metal buildings, i.e. glass skyscrapers)

Walkable neighborhoods brimming with life

While some solitary walks will be fun, I also love walking right into the mix of things with crowds of people all living together. I'm thinking here of my experiences living in Cairo and visiting some of the more working class areas where everyone is kind of pushed up next to one another

Crooked streets and winding alleyways

I love wandering aimlessly through a city especially on cobblestone streets.

Sweeping vistas

I love being up on a mountain and looking out over rolling hills and such.

Quieter evenings

I'm not huge into nightlife, and although we will definitely go out dancing a few nights of our honeymoon, we'd ideally like to avoid somewhere that is loud and raucous late into the night.

Caves or other cave-like attractions (catacombs, crypts, etc)

Going underground is awesome.

Good live music

Ideally we'd like to go to a performance of live music. Doesn't have to be a concert, in fact just some players in the corner of a bar, cafe, or restaurant would be even better.

I'd say we are leaning more towards "luxury" budget traveler. We're not interested in staying in hostels or seedy run-down hotels but anywhere clean and homey is fine (and that includes hotels with smaller rooms and shared bathrooms). For food we're perfectly happy with street food most of the time, but would like to go to where the locals eat out (not sure if that is a custom in Mexico or not) once or twice.

Neither of us is fluent in Spanish but we hopefully would know enough to get around. I always bring a phrasebook with me when I travel and try to pick up a bit of the language.

What should I (a late-marrying, book-crazy, somewhat institution-of-marriage-wary bride) read on my honeymoon? Inspired (in a way) by this question, I'm looking for novels to help me reflect on, process, and understand marriage. I've been a voracious reader since I was little, and I still understand the world best by reading stories. So now I'm in love and thrilled to be marrying my fiance, I'd like read novels that might help me think about this whole new thing. Can you help me plug the hole in my reading history with some big, enthralling novels?

(Bonus points for novels from a woman's POV. Paperback availability is appreciated.)

Ideas for NYC honeymoon surprise romantic gesture.

Going to be on honeymoon in NYC in June and want to prepare a memorable and thoughtful surprise for my new wife. We are a non-American honeymooning couple and will be in Manhattan for 10 days in June. I would like to totally surprise my new wife with a romantic gesture. It should be thoughtful and sweet and have her scratching her head as to how I pulled it off. I have been toying with the idea of consorting with some willing member of this site and getting them to hide a letter or something somewhere in central park. On our first morning we go for a stroll in Central Park and I walk to the pre-appointed rock or tree-hole or whatever and say 'Hey look there’s something in here, its got your name on it' etc. she opens it and reads it..... I feel that this idea is good in principle but lacking in impact. Essentially its just a letter hidden in a tree. So does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could build on it? Or can you think of alternative surprises, I am open to pretty much any suggestions?

We are staying in a nice hotel and are planning the trip in great detail so we will be eating in nice restaurants and doing interesting things. Money is not a barrier within reason (I could stretch to a few hundred bucks if it was worth it) but neither should it be required, she does not especially care for things that can be bought. I don’t think she would be impressed by the following type of surprises: Helicopter ride around Manhattan. Our names on a scrolling sign in Time Square. Booking a mega-expensive meal. Anything to do with the top of the Empire State. Thoughtful and surprising is more important than expensive and spectacular or clichéd. I know its very little information to go on and I know her best but I would love to hear your suggestions. Not looking for a gift per say but a surprise or unforgettable gesture.

Couple of other points. Depending on what I decide on I might need to impose on a willing member of this site to help execute it but not until I know what I am doing. In any case I have set up an email address for this purpose or any other questions people might have: mefi.groom@gmail.com. Not sure how I could rope someone in but maybe I could get matt to help me ask for help if needs be. I also realise that it might not be advisable to be seen hiding things in public places in NYC but you probably know that.

where to honeymoon in late summer from NJ area

late august/early september honeymoon, where should we go? so we are getting married on 8/28 in Philadelphia and can't figure out good places to go for the weeklong honeymoon. my lady is very fair skinned so does not want to go anywhere too hot, so most caribbean and central american stuff seems out.
we love to hike and enjoy nature and all but would also like to just relax some too. a place that has a balance of both would be great.

budget is probably around $5000, less would be better of course.
and not too long of a plane ride, maybe under 4 hours, which rules out Europe it seems.

any ideas would be great.

Where should we visit in Western Europe in August?

Where should we visit in Western Europe in August? Ok. so I am planning a honeymoon and after much research and debating, my finance and I decided Spain & Morocco would be the best blend of relaxation and adventure. Then I looked at the weather for August. Too hot. That and a friend of mine in Europe mentioned that most of Spain & France also go on vacation in August so a lot would be closed.

So the main question is, where are some of the best places to visit in Europe in August?

Details:10-14 days leaving around the 1st of August. We'd like a blend of relaxation and adventure.
I've been to Germany (extensively), Greece & Turkey, so would like to avoid those.

Any suggestions with explanations would be appreciated, thanks!!

What do you know about Tofino?

I'm getting married this summer, and my partner and I are looking at the west coast of Vancouver for our honeymoon. We've found Tofino and specifically La Picola cabin and I'm looking for any information folks might have about the cabin; good, bad, indifferent, any.

(I read the other asks about Tofino, but none of them had as much detail as I'm looking for) We'll be up there in the first week of August for about a week, and figure we'll stay in the cabin for most of the time, with maybe a night at one of the schmancy hotels nearby for a hot shower and room service.

In general I'm looking for ideas about where to kayak (and rent them for a few days), run, hike, whale-watch, fish, eat, and generally lounge around, with an emphasis on down-scale and cozy. Things like hot springs and where to shop for groceries and good wine would be welcome as well.

Suggestions about other places to stay (not necessarily in Tofino, but with similar recreation opportunities) would be great!

Honey moon help please!

Trying to plan a two week, multi-destination honeymoon and need suggestions! This is in followup to this question I posted several months ago. The idea is that since the fiance will be doing most of the wedding planning, I will completely plan the honey moon. I will only be telling her about the climates (for clothing) and to bring her passport.

I am thinking Europe since we both love Paris and the SO loves Germany. My plan is to fly over and rent a house by the coast in the Greek isles (looking for specific suggestions), stay there for 5 days or so, head up to Venice for three days, and then finish in Amsterdam for the last 6 days. I think the time in Greece would be fairly relaxing and is a place we have wanted to visit. For me, Paris was my only travel to Europe, so I am definitely open to and looking for other suggestions.

I guess my big concern is the complexity and time eaten up by travel. There are dozens of places in europe we would be thrilled to visit, so please advise if others are easier/better to string together. My one request from the bride to be was to stop in at least one place that is warm (beach focus). I plan on using trip advisor once I have a better idea of where to go.

I have a good bit of time to save so the budget is flexible, Monaco is probably out though. We currently live in Philadelphia if it matters.

New Zealand Honeymoon Advice

Honeymoonfilter. Anyone have experience going on a campervan trip in New Zealand? I am a travel noob. I have travelled outside of Western Canada a total of three times in my entire life and as one might expect I am a little apprehensive about travelling so far away.

We are planning on going on our honeymoon in late September/Early October '09 and are intrigued by the thought of cruising the New Zealand countryside via campervan.

What we would like to know is:

1. Is it fairly hassle free?
2. Is there one rental company that is better than the others?
3. Should we splurge and get the luxe RV? (toilet and shower)
4. Is there ample camping?
5. Should we worry about crime? (again, scaredycat guy far away from comfort of home)
6. Is it touristy? As in busy with tourists or is it somewhat unpopulated?
7. How the weather this time of year?

I have read this question and have done some research on google but was hoping a New Zealander (ite?) or someone that has done it could provide a little insight.

Can anyone recommend a travel agent in Columbus, OH to help us plan our honeymoon? Do we need one? Where should we go? My fiance and I are marrying in late July. We need to get the ball rolling on our honeymoon, but don't know where to go. We're seasoned travelers, having been all over the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe. I've never gone through a travel agent before, mostly because I can navigate the tubes and find a good deal, but this time we're looking for something a little more exotic... and of all the vacations I ever take, I want this one to go smoothly, and without complication.

So:
-Is it worthwhile to use a travel agent? Is it more or less expensive? How much better is it than going through expedia or similar?
-Where should we go on our honeymoon? We want something somewhat tropical, where we can spend time outside. We'd love to go on a zip line in a rain forest, snorkel, see a volcano, etc, but also some stress-free beach time. So far, we're thinking Costa Rica, Belize, Hawaii, or Fiji. Where else should we look?
-Know of a good travel agent in Columbus, OH or vicinity?

How to keep this honeymoon out of the ditch

Where can we go on our honeymoon? In January. In a car. Oh, and we're driving from Michigan. So it happens that my fiance and I will be able to go on a honeymoon just after we are married, which happens to be in the dead of winter in Michigan (Grand Rapids area). His parents have graciously offered to pay for a honeymoon as our wedding gift, but I've been told that the location needs to be somewhere close enough for us to drive to. I will be doing the majority of the driving and navigating; my fiance has never lived in the US and has only driven a few times here, so I am just anticipating that the bulk of this will be left to me. I am not a huge fan of driving, though, even less so in Michigan winters and I really have no idea where we can even go. My fiance seems to be hung up on the idea of going to Niagara Falls, which is at least 6 hours away according to google maps. I have mentioned to him (repeatedly) that people don't really take road trips in the winter here, but he's not from around here and I don't think he'll ever quite grasp what I'm trying to tell him until he's been stuck in horrible snowy traffic for a couple hours. Last year around the same time we had plans to go to New York City and he had wanted me to drive then, too; at the very last minute I talked him into getting plane tickets instead. I've been really thinking I would rather fly somewhere this time, too, but it would need to be somewhere we could fly to relatively inexpensively (ahahhaha) and definitely would need to be in the mainland US.

Has anyone been to Niagara in winter? Is it worth the trek? Is there -anywhere- else we could drive to instead? Is there a reasonable place we could fly to? The dates we have to work with would be Dec. 30-Jan. 9, so yes, this is pretty short notice, but I can't do anything about the lack of planning now other than take care of it!
