internet on honduras islands

internet on Honduras islands for diving trip A friend of mine and I want to learn to dive on one of the Honduras islands, Utila or Roatan. We've heard great things about it and are psyched to go. However, we both need access to decent high-speed internet while there. Do you have any first hand experience with internet on either Island? What recommendations might you have about it and where might we go to get more information?
In addition any recommendations about lodging and which island to stay at would also be appreciated.

What should I pack for a trip to Honduras?

I'm going to spend a week in Copán Ruinas, Honduras. What should I pack? I'll be there for the first week in August. How hot/cold is it going to be? Will I need to keep modesty in mind? What am I going to want in terms of OTC medicines, bug spray/sunscreen (I'm pretty fair), etc? Should I get money changed before I go? Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Where'd all these frogs come from?

Vacationing in Roatan, Honduras for the past 10 days and up until yesterday hadn't seen a single frog. Last night, the frog croaking in the field outside my house was surprisingly loud. It literally sounds like thousands of frogs croaking at once. It's very cool. Today, saw frogs everywhere. Any frog experts know what kind of frogs these might be, why they were scarce until yesterday, and if it's normal for them to congregate in this fashion? I've asked some locals, and they've shrugged it off as if it's no big deal. It seems to me that if it's a regular occurence, it would be the sort of thing one would hear about as a tourist, in a "if you're here in Late September, don't miss the crazy frog migration". They've started up again, and it's so loud, that if i was standing down on the road, i'd have to shout to be heard. My guess is that it's mating related, but any specific info would be great.

Does anyone know where I can find the Matchstick Man?

Where can I find this naughty matchstick dispenser? I am hoping MeFi can help. I am looking for a matchstick dispenser that I thought I saw in Honduras, but am not sure (it's been a while). It's a little man and when you push down on his head, he pulls down his pants and reveals his matchstick penis. Has anyone seen something like this in their travels or online somewhere?

I suppose one might wonder why I ask...a friend of mine had seen this as well, and wants to buy some to give away as tacky gifts to everyone he knows. Besides, who wouldn't want a little man that dispenses matchstick in such a naughty manner? Thanks!

Replacing a lost RN license (1962 - Guanaja, Honduras - Chicago University?)

I need to contact the Chicago nursing school (name unknown) that issued the RN license (via distance learning) to a Honduran woman in about 1962 (!). All she remembers is that the signature on the license was "Louise Peterson". This RN license was destroyed by hurricane Mitch in 1998. Replacing this license was the only request of this very amazing woman who serves the Sabana Bight community on the island of Guanaja.

Elena Suniga Johnson is not just the nurse who serves the Savannah Bight clinic, she is the 24 hour emergency service, the midwife, the coroner, the personal counselor for all the surrounding communities. Aunt Elena is greatly respected and has touched almost every life on the island for four decades. She works for a meager wage and lives simply. I would very much like to help her with this one request.

What to do in Honduras?

HondurasFilter: What to do in Honduras during July? My girlfriend and I are thinking of going to Honduras for 10 - 14 days this July. The idea would be to fly into and spend some time in Tegucigalpa. We would then bus it up to San Pedro Sula where a Honduran colleague of mine will hook us up with an old friend of his to stay with, and, after a few days we'd head to La Ceiba and on to the Bay Islands. We'd then flight out of San Pedro Sula.

Although I have this itinerary worked out, I'm wondering what MeFites who've traveled to Honduras would specifically recommend we check out while in or around Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba and the Islands. Or what we can see to break up the trips between those places.

Specifically we're interested in two things: 1) cultural/religious festivals, markets, or other places where lots of people interact with each other, and 2) beautiful natural ares (Lago de Yojoa is a good option, i know).

An ingenious game of chance in which the deluded player thinks he’s beating the house.

Travel[+Insurance]Filter. I have medical (50% cost) + Emergency Repatriation coverage for a 10 week trip to Central America. Should I have anything else? If so, where can I get such a custom policy? Any last minute advice on destinations as well? I’m off to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua to learn Spanish and see mayan sites, mountains and dive off coast [wohoo!]. I may go on to Costa Rica and Panama or head back into Belize or Mexico.

My question is this: Should I get more insurance?

I have $150k repatriation insurance through my employer. My US health insurance pays 50% of out-of-network costs for any procedure, no matter where it’s conducted.

I’m traveling with <$750 of gear total (bag, camera, clothes, books etc) and will be staying fairly low rent in cities, jungles etc. I have my shots and meds ready. My travel plans are v. flexible, so I don't know dates or when I'll buy my tickets during the 10 week period.

As a bonus: any suggestions on places to go or last minute advice for that part of the world?

Help me understand Honduras.

Help me understand Honduras. What is a 'police state'? Why do the police officers here carry shotguns and wear paramilitary sweaters and boots? Why do police officers with shotguns, paramilitary sweaters and boots work shifts at Popeye's Chicken and the shoe store?

Starting from Ohio, I crossed the border in Brownsville, TX and wound through Mexico via Ciudad de Mexico, Oaxaca, Salina Cruz and Tapachula. In Guatemala I noticed the heavily armed heavy police presence and in Honduras I've seen the same.

Today, leaving my sister's apartment in San Pedro Sula, I saw a dead man slumped over into the passenger seat of his Toyota, having been shot moments before. Blood on his shirt, crashed into a tree. Camera crews around, police tape cordoned about the scene.

Mexico was poor but pleasant. Guatemala and Honduras have been desparate and paranoid before becoming violent.

This isn't a question for anyone with Google-fu enough to find a wikipedia article. I've been there. Have you lived here? Have you gone to college and studied Latin American economics or history?

Some footnotes. A conversational synopsis. Personal anecdotes. Weatherworn opinions.

Maybe it's the humidity.
