If you have a low-end A/V receiver (less than $400) that has lasted without problems for 5 years or more, tell me the brand name. I won't buy the same model that you bought five years ago, but I may choose the same brand, and go buy the latest equivalent offering manufactured from them.

Ever since the DVD age began, I've noticed that music and sound effects in movies are always WAY louder than the dialogue. It's really annoying. Will a properly configured surround sound system fix this? What is the right way to set up surround sound speakers? Are sound bars any good?

One of the rear surround outputs on my receiver causes any speaker that's plugged into it to constantly produce a quiet but noticeable sound of static or white noise. What could be causing this?

I'm going back to school in the Fall for a 2-year biomedical equipment tech degree which will hopefully lead to a decent long-term career. Yay! In the meantime (until the Fall and during the 2 years) though, I need to make some money. I've thought that maybe A/V or home theater installation might fit the bill as something I have some interest in and wouldn't be completely dead-end. Is it a good job?

Are there any flaws in my home theater audio plans? I own the
LG 50PK550 TV which I love, but the internal speakers are predictably terrible. I'm starting from scratch with audio as I currently have no components. I was considering just a two speaker solution, but I've decided after spending the day browsing AVS that I'm likely going for a full 7.1 system. Price to performance ratio is extremely important to me though, I want something I'll be happy with and that will last, but I'm not willing to spend $100s more for minor gains. I don't have a strict budget but the cheaper the better (for a good product).

I am supposed to be a Smart Person and understand technology, but trying to price out and determine the right components for a modest home-audio setup is apparently beyond me.

How can I listen to music from my PC on a home theater while utilizing my sub woofer? I have my PC in a different room, hooked up with an optical cable to my home theater receiver. When I play music from iTunes on my PC, the sound only comes out of my main floor speakers and not my sub woofer. Is this possible with regular music tracks?

I'm thinking about moving to a more minimalist home theater -- in-wall speakers, all components in a nearby closet, nothing in the room except the TV attached to a wall. I'm not finding much in the way of resources for doing this in existing construction. Anyone ever try something like this?

HomeTheaterFilter: My friend currently owns a Rotel
surround receiver and
DVD player and six
B&W 600 series speakers. He wants to upgrade speakers, and has budgeted $8,000-10,000 to do so. Should he, or is there another part of the system that needs upgrading more urgently?
And if speakers are the way to go - keeping in mind that high-end home theater can be highly subjective - what should he get?
