I just bought an optical audio cable to plug my PS2 into my receiver. I bought the cheapest one because they ranged as high as 180 CAD and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay that much for a 4ft cable. Is there a difference between the 31 CAD one I bought and the ultra-blah-blah-blah Monster cable that I could have bought?

I'm thinking about moving to a more minimalist home theater -- in-wall speakers, all components in a nearby closet, nothing in the room except the TV attached to a wall. I'm not finding much in the way of resources for doing this in existing construction. Anyone ever try something like this? [more inside]

HomeTheaterFilter: My friend currently owns a Rotel surround receiver and DVD player and six B&W 600 series speakers. He wants to upgrade speakers, and has budgeted $8,000-10,000 to do so. Should he, or is there another part of the system that needs upgrading more urgently?
And if speakers are the way to go - keeping in mind that high-end home theater can be highly subjective - what should he get?

Stereo/home theater cable question(s): Can you use a "regular" RCA cable as a "Coaxial digital" interconnect for digital audio from, say, a DVD player to a receiver? The plug seems the same size, but don't know if it carries the same signal. Similar question: can you use a standard AUDIO RCA cable (red or white) to carry a standard VIDEO RCA signal? Or does it have to be the yellow-labeled RCA?

Assume I'm starting from scratch except for a 32" JVC TV with s-video input. How would you build a budget home theater for a multi-purpose room? Rather than get into my particular preferences (other than that I want to play DVDs, CDs and CD-Rs), I'd like respondents to make recommendations based on the variables most important to them (e.g., getting a cheap player and being indifferent to its picture quality because it's region-free; splurging on a center channel speaker because it's that important; insisting on a combo DVD-R/PVR regardless of price because it's such a killer app; going with simple stereo separation because surround sound is overblown, etc.). Specific product and retailer recommendations are especially welcome.
