Thanks to the ever-wonderful advice of AskMeFi, I picked up a Mackie Onyx mixer which I've been using with Reaper to record a small band, and I am perfectly pleased. In order to hear ourselves live using the mixer's low latency, the audio out from the mixer is being piped out over unbalanced stereo that passes next to a wall full of electrical wiring and into a 1/4"-1/8" converter into the line-in of my computer's speakers. It is roughly as awful as it sounds.

Computer music MeFites! I need your help! Here is what I want to do: compose music on Finale, export the composition to a MIDI sequencing software, add beats that I'd also like to create myself, and then mix in real instruments including voice. What do I need?

How big a problem is USB microphone latency for multitrack musical recording? i.e. How difficult will it be to do tight vocal overdubs with a straight-to-USB mic? What about with a mic->XLR->USB interface->Mac setup?

What new PC computer CPU (not laptop) would you recommend to record/playback audio from disk while running several heavy VSTs? It will be used for recording and live performance. I want capacity and low latency with no hiccups. I am looking at bang for the buck, but don't want to spend
almost enough. AMD or Intel dual core? Intel quad core worth the extra money? 2 gig RAM enough?

DIY Keyboard: It's my understanding that I can take an old PII computer running, say, Windows 98, hook up a cheap MIDI keyboard to it and presto change-o have a grand piano or Hammond B-3 keyboard. Is that the case, if so what's the best way to do it (what software?), what else is there to do, or else what do I have wrong?

Can anyone recommend a high quality, reasonably priced, project studio microphone specifically for vocals? Are preamplification and compression as important as the microphone?

Home Studio Questions:
(1) opinions of Pro Tools vs GarageBand or other multitrack audio tools that run on a Mac (DP? Deck?)?
(2) What are the *most* useful home studio items you've ever bought, the ones you wouldn't want to do without?
(3) What are the *least* useful items you've ever bought -- stuff you got and then later thought "well, that was disappointing"?
