I have managed to accumulate (over time and several bad buying decisions) three pairs of quality-make men's shoes of different types, all in nearly-new condition, that I don't want or can't wear, and I'd like them to go to someone who could really use them. The thing they have in common is each has a non-obvious flaw that would cause buyer's regret in anyone who actually paid money for them, so Goodwill is out. [more inside]
I'm looking for relevant and frequently updated sources of news (preferably online) about homelessness and related issues: poverty, supportive housing, etc. [more inside]
Hi there Hivemind, at what temperature (fahrenheit, preferably) does it become unsafe for a person to spend the night in a car? [more inside]
The homeless outreach program I work for wants to start a cleaning crew similar to Men in Blue run by The Doe Fund in New York and Philadelphia. I know so precious little about cleaning, let alone managing an entire cleaning crew. Any idea what equipment I'll need for a team of three to clean outside in the street? I imagine there'll be trash removal, mowing, and I'd like to include the actual cleaning of the pavement.
Please help my son (17 years) with a presentation about the homeless people in the US. We are from Scandinavia, and due to our welfare system, we don't have the same situation as in the US. We have explored several issues, and the more we search, the more questions we have. [more inside]
My boyfriend and I are helping out a homeless couple and a homeless single girl-- how do I set boundaries and time limits without seeming pushy? When is enough enough? How do I truly help them? Lots and lots of details inside. [more inside]
What are some demands that can be made of a city (pop 250,000) that would immediately find benefit for 13 homeless people? Extra credit: Consider half these people probably need some mental help but would be pretty likely to refuse it. [more inside]
Need help to think about the details of a feeding scheme for homeless and people in need in my neighbourhood. [more inside]
How do I help my aunt (who has largely undiagnosed mental illness issues) avoid homelessness? Do they make nannies for adults? (details below) [more inside]
I'm looking for a fascinating piece that I read a few years back that painted an extensive portrait of the lives and culture of runaways and other people living on the margins, written from personal experience. I think it was very long, divided into two pages, and possibly specifically directed at writers whom the author was criticizing for getting their culture wrong. I remember that s/he alked about getting started mugging or shoplifting, how to handle yourself in fights to minimize the amount of actual fighting you would be forced to do, and I forget what all else. One part that I particularly remember asserted that people in this sort of situation could be very conservative sexually but promiscuous emotionally, or something like that. [more inside]
Sort of homeless/drunk dudes have set up camp on my street! Please read all of this before dismissing me as an unfeeling NIMBY!! [more inside]
I've got some sketchy details about a movie I'm looking for & I'm hoping it will sound familar to someone here. The movie is about a young social worker who is working in a homeless shelter. To learn more about being homeless, the SWer pretends to be homeless herself and befriends a homeless woman. The homeless woman gets very angry when she finds out that her friend is actually a social worker & is not homeless. It may have been a Lifetime movie or something as equally cheesy. Any ideas?
