North Texas resources on homelessness

Through a string of bad luck (losing my job, losing my health insurance, bit of a breakdown at the start of the summer), I'm looking at being homeless in a couple of days. There aren't many options out there for a single male. This is a last ditch effort to find resources in my area other than shelters. [more inside]

Is there a housing safety net for a severely disabled person in Canada?

A 69 yr old wheelchair bound man, in SK, Canada, may end up homeless in the very near future. I need to know our options so that he continues to be cared for. In short, all the other safety nets have had holes in them, and we are being threatened with eviction. He relies on me (caregiver/wife) to bathe him, dress him, attend to personal hygiene/bathroom needs. He cannot walk at all, can stand with help, has use of one arm/hand. Living on the streets isn't going to work. Where do I turn now? More details below the fold. [more inside]

Best Movies About Homelessness

What are your favorite movies about homelessness? I am trying to compile a "watch these" list of movies that have a homelessness theme. Lists that I've seen so far have incorporated those movies that may have a homeless character, or mention homelessness, but I'm looking only for homeless themed movies, such as "The Fisher King", "Being Flynn", "With Honors" etc. Also, if you know of more than one homeless movie, could you tell me which one was your favorite and why? I appreciate your time and interest.

Do homeless individuals have codes of conduct or rules?

I recently learned that the panhandlers in my city (Cambridge, MA) often share their food when they get big items and it made me wonder - do homeless individuals often have explicit or implicit rules, like "share when you get food" or "the person who's been homeless the longest gets the best spot"? What do you think happens if people break the rule? I'm sure there's a lot of variation both within and between cities, but if anyone has any thoughts, I'd really appreciate it!

Ways To Help People in Need with Writing or Film Skills?

St. Louis friend trained as a writer and filmmaker wants to use his skills to help people in need/suffering. Does anyone in the area (the city, or St. Louis County) know of any volunteering options for him? He already has an office job, but career suggestions would be welcome, though I think volunteering is more of an immediate interest. National and local organizations anyone knows of in the area are welcome. Thanks!

Friend kicked out of home in Florida - what resources can I recommend?

An friend just got booted out of her home in Florida with an hour's notice by her boyfriend. She has no money, important possessions from small to large in the house, and pets. I advised her to call the police but beyond that I had no idea. Later I found the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and sent her the hotline number. But there must exist checklists or articles for this sort of situation, seeing as it happens so often in abusive relationships! [more inside]

Cleaning Crew startup

The homeless outreach program I work for wants to start a cleaning crew similar to Men in Blue run by The Doe Fund in New York and Philadelphia. I know so precious little about cleaning, let alone managing an entire cleaning crew. Any idea what equipment I'll need for a team of three to clean outside in the street? I imagine there'll be trash removal, mowing, and I'd like to include the actual cleaning of the pavement.

Other than chili and spaghetti, what can I make in mass quantity that requires not much $$$, time or ingredients? Poor little kitty wants a home

I've been spending the weekend at my house that's about to be foreclosed on because I'm visiting some friends and there is a poor beautiful kitty who has been meowing outside to be let inside. I'm pretty sure she's a stray -- she's got some chunks of fur missing from what looks to be a fight that are scabbed over. I am only here for the weekend and I head back to California soon, and there is absolutely no way I can keep her -- there's no way to get her to California and I already have two cats. [more inside]

How do I be a good houseguest?

Starting next week, I'm not going to have a home. I will be staying with friends anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks while I find a place to stay. What are best practices for being a good houseguest in this situation? (I plan to stay at each place for a week.) I do not have a car, and will be renting a storage space to keep my stuff in for the duration. Please assume hotels, motels, and hostels are financially not an option. I do already plan to buy dinner specifically for these friends, and to pay for my own food the rest of the time.
