I need to furnish a house for myself, my wife and two small kids. We have zero furniture right now. We will only be in this house for a year until we eventually buy a house. Without knowing the space that we will eventually end up in, I am not sure if I should make big investments in couches, entertainment centers, etc. I need to do this as quickly as possible. Should I buy what I really want or should I just buy cheap stuff for now? Either way, what's the easiest way to do this without running around like a mad man? I am going to have to pull this off without any help. Should I just walk into Ikea with a shopping list? Can I have all of this stuff delivered? We are in Austin if it matters.

I need to find music clips to go with some home videos. This one of Amsterdam
is 2:45. This one of Bacharach Germany
is 4:02 and this one of Frankfurt
is 3:11. The clips are for my own purposes only. I share them with friends and family as reminders of the vacation time we had together. The music should be easy enough for most people to enjoy/tolerate, not too mainstream and should be perky(ish). Here is an example of a video I made on Whitehorse, Yukon
where I live. I'm looking for the same sort of vibe for the other videos. [more inside]

This morning my husband and I woke up to discover that seemingly overnight our house has begun to reek of what I can only describe as a strong burning hair smell. We haven't started using our heater or anything like that yet, and nothing has changed in our daily routine. Any suggestions on what might produce such an aroma?

Ethernet ports in every room, but none of them work. The brains of the system which is in the wall of a closet is a Square D Multi-Link Structured Wiring System. How do I find out how it's set up and how do make it work as it should? [more inside]

To self-list or not not self-list ... this is the question.
Do we list by ourselves thru a discount broker on MLS and use an realtor to help us find a new house or do we go ahead and list thru a standard broker that will do both and pay them the extra % in commission. Details inside. [more inside]

If I need plumbing, painting, electrical, HVAC work and carpentry work done on my newly purchased home, is it better to hire one contractor for all the work or just find a separate painter, electrician, HVAC guy etc? I am a first time home buyer, so sorry if this is an obvious question. [more inside]

Storm preparation: if we loose power, can we use a match to ignite a top burner on a gas stove (instead of the electric igniter)?

I think I need a break in my marriage. I've been a lot of emotional pain, and his behavior is making it worse and worse. However, we'd so damn poor that we couldn't even afford to physically separate. What's the likelihood of a separation within a marital residence

In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days.
Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury

Strange home noise. Single family, single story home, with city water and sewer. Since moving in (renters) there was occasionally a deep hollow metallic booming sound coming from parts unknown (sometimes sounding under the house, sometimes just outside the house) lasting just one second. It happened mostly once a night or so; but past week has increased in frequency to every 15-30 minutes. It is not coming from the hot water heater. It is not so loud as to be a huge nuisance though loud enough to wake me at night.
The house is on a hillside, and settling of soils is known but the footings appear relatively unchanged. A city water pipe on our street is apparently leaking. Dont know how to begin to figure out what it might be...

What is a good way to have a kitchen table sometimes, but not other times? We don't have space for a permanent kitchen table, but my fiance and I want to be able to have his parents and possibly 2 siblings over for dinner every couple of weeks. I'm having nightmares of plastic fold up card tables (yuck) or the dreaded TV trays (double yuck).
One thing we've thought of is a patio table that can sometimes come inside. Any links to cute looking patio tables that are not too heavy to bring in and out sometimes? Teak? Or?

My fiancee and I moved into an amazing apartment which has everything we wanted...except a bathtub. The shower is porn-worthy: 2 shower heads, a big window looking over the city, and even a fully-tiled cubby with a step up...and it's 6 feet by 5 feet. The cubby is about 3 feet by 2 feet. I'm slow. It took me many years to have this revelation re: home organization: "If an object is not frequently used and is not decorative, it should be put away" (unless, of course, you have incredibly little storage space).
So what's the next revelation? Or some corollaries of this one which might flesh out this basic idea?

I have a small home based computer business in Australia and need some allowable tax deductions. I understand that assets such as office furniture, plant & equipment are immediately tax deductible (don't need to be depreciated) if they're under $1,000. What are some things I could buy for my home office to reduce my tax? Thanks in advance
