I need to install new carpet in my 2-bedroom house. I know next to nothing about this. Sorry, we're not looking for wood or vinyl floors at this time. I just want to hear from people who've been through this experience. Got one grade-school age kid, one dog and one cat. What type of carpet deals with this traffic, resists stains and still looks good and is moderately priced? Also any advice on trying to learn how to install this yourself vs. professional installers.

After having drainage and a sump pump installed in our basement, we’ve noticed an unusually large amount of groundwater being pumped out into the connecting dry well. We’d like to determine the source of this water, but, as usual, there are some unusual details….

I'm in an apartment with a white bathtub that has some scratches (or maybe burns? they look dark brown) that reveal the underlying bronze-looking metal. Is there any really simple cheap way to cover over those scratches (other than a bathtub mat)? Perhaps some kind of simple "white-out" like spray that would do the job?

No good deed goes unpunished: Gave my lovely little Greenwich Village basement art studio to someone for a few months. I got it back in the most atrocious shape...with my beautiful plaster walls completely hacked to bits from him incompetently drilling screw after useless screw into my wall, taking huge chunks of plaster out, and making occasional giant gouges with long anchoring screws (and even incomprehensibly applying adhesive spray insulation to glue wood boards to the wall. *sob*) The wall is about 11x9 feet. How much should I expect to pay to get this fixed? I'm handy, but know nothing about plaster and feel gutted about letting someone treat this super-old plaster wall so badly.

I just moved and am trying to figure out the most elegant network audio solution. Most of the equipment I think I need is already here [below the fold], and I want to figure out if I need to buy anything else, or if what I have already is enough to suit my needs.

Two home building questions. Firstly for those who have built, with the wisdom of hindsight, what things did you forget that you wished you had had included or for that matter extra stuff you paid for but wouldn't now. Secondly any recommendations for builders in Canberra Australia, in particular ones good at sticking to a budget.
