This past year, we bought a house. A month or two later my wife sold her house. We'd really hoped we could sell the house first, obviously, but it was a bad market and we were in a rush get the home (my wife's house was in another state). So now we both have a0 large mortgage and a large chunk of cash. We're trying to figure out what to do now.

This Christmas we were told by my Dad that he will be giving us his house when he moves out of state. It doesn't have a functioning kitchen (no sink, just a fridge and a microwave and he washes his dishes in a tub with water from the bathroom) The house has charm, and there could be plumbing problems and it's also in a dicey neighborhood. So my question is this:
What do we do with this house? Fix it up enough to live in it for the price of utilities and taxes for a few years so we can go back to school? Try to sell it without even fixing it (we'd get maybe $20,000). Fix it up and become landlords after living there for a few years?

It is often said (by presumably reputable sources, such as
FHA), that you can afford a house payment that equals 28% - 35% of your pre-tax salary. This seems like an astonishing large amount of money to me -- it's almost 2x what I pay now in rent. Even considering the tax deduction, how can this be right, in this day and age of low housing appreciation rates?

Would I know if this is as good as it gets? I know I've got it pretty good, better than most I bet...but I feel a little, I don't know, perhaps unsettled. But maybe that isn't even the right way to describe it - physically it's more liked stressed with a side order of tired. How do you know when you're at the top of your game and when you are in the place that is best for you and your family?

Is there a way to find out who own's a house? There was a house for rent about a year ago that my girlfriend and I liked the look/price of a lot, but it got filled before we sought any information. Is there some way to be notified if this house comes up for rent again without knocking on the door and asking the renters? My apologies if this is an obvious thing most adults know.

Hi
I have a Panasonic VT30 65" plasma and I'm excited about the release of a video game next week. I'd like to celebrate by cashing in some amazon gift cards and adding better sound.
Challenges:
*My bedroom is small, so this stuff has to be low profile.
*I only want to spend a few hundred dollars. Let's say $300-800. I'll upgrade some future day.
I think a standalone receiver is not a sensible option but I'll consider it. Maybe a soundbar with sub is the way to go? If a soundbar really can simulate surround, that's great. If I have to go multispeakers they will have to be low profile.
Thanks for reading. People probably ask this all the time but my search results were pretty poor!

I have just bought a home and want to remodel both bathrooms and paint interior before I move in. I got two bids and both were about the same. The companies both have good reviews on Angie's list and are the same size, so this makes me feel ok about the price estimated. That said, the price quoted is still a bit more than what I expected so I am wondering what suggestions people have for managing and bringing down costs.

Baseboards - Stained or Painted? My boyfriend and I are buying a house, and the builder has installed lovely paneled wood interior doors. He said that he would like to stain them to match the cabinets (a medium stain called "spice") and will also stain the baseboards. I love the look of the stained doors, but am concerned the baseboards might look...I don't know, old fashioned or something. Does anyone have stained baseboards, and do you love or hate them? Also, if we later decide to paint them white, how much of a pain is that?
