Can I buy my parents' house in a way that makes financial sense?

My parents have always struggled financially, living under crippling debt and never able to have an income able to match the bills, the biggest of which is their mortgage. I hate to see how difficult this situation is for my dad, and I want to help out for the sake of his stress level, and also because once he retires in a few years the math truly does not work out in their favor. I've been thinking of buying some land anyway, so I'm wondering if there is any feasible way to make this work for both my parents and me. [more inside]

FL Homeowner's Insurance 90 days after the closing...is it possible

Through a paperwork SNAFU, we failed to secure homeowners insurance at closing on the house we purchased (with cash, no mortgage) in Florida 78 days ago. Now we keep getting told by multiple Florida insurers that because the house was not insured within 30days of closing, they will not write a policy for it. They do say "If you get insurance on it, we will be happy to write a policy for you" [more inside]

We may own a house in two years

This Christmas we were told by my Dad that he will be giving us his house when he moves out of state. It doesn't have a functioning kitchen (no sink, just a fridge and a microwave and he washes his dishes in a tub with water from the bathroom) The house has charm, and there could be plumbing problems and it's also in a dicey neighborhood. So my question is this: What do we do with this house? Fix it up enough to live in it for the price of utilities and taxes for a few years so we can go back to school? Try to sell it without even fixing it (we'd get maybe $20,000). Fix it up and become landlords after living there for a few years? [more inside]

Separation within a marital residence: is it doable?

I think I need a break in my marriage. I've been a lot of emotional pain, and his behavior is making it worse and worse. Two homes and some distance?

My partner and I are ontemplating separation and I am thinking of moving several towns over. I have read stories of parents separating and the benefits of the two homes being close as in a few blocks. But what should I know about making it work for myself and my kid when the homes are further apart? I would like to hear positive advice from parents and kids who have negotiated two homes with a little distance between them . Were their plusses to this distance to balance out the minuses? How did you make it work? [more inside]

Explain Property Taxes to me (Chicago)

Explain Property Taxes to me (Chicago) I recently bought a condo in the Wicker Park area of Chicago (Cook County). A week ago I received a notice that my 2008 Property Tax Bill is delinquent. Odd thing was it was sent to me by the builder of my condo building. I was under the impression that my mortgage company was supposed to be paying my property taxes and not me. I have a 30 year fixed mortgage with BoA if that's important. So what do I do? Anonymous 'cause I'm pretty ashamed I don't know the answer to this and know I should.

Help me with a bit of passive home defence

Looking for a GSM alarm system for my house. I don't live in the States, so the answer should ideally be non-US specific. I was wondering about the Panasonic BL-C131A, but that needs presumably a decent amount of light and a working internet connection to alert me of break-ins. And without push email, fifteen minutes could pass before I get the alert. It's not really ideal, I don't think... [more inside]

Registered sex offender in the neighborhood, would you move in if you had two kids under the age of six? The house is perfect in a very quiet neighborhood at the end of long mostly dead end road.
