Recently my bike and some other trivial stuff has been stolen off my porch. My bike was locked. :( I want to bait this thief with another bike (my broken one) and see who this jerk is. I have a mac and want to use a wireless webcam. Infrared is key since I believe he strikes at night. Is there an app for OS X and a compatible webcam for this situation? Ideally, it would not capture footage unless their is activity. -thanks

I am looking for products/services where you can install a camera outside your home (maybe on the porch or back deck) and see what's going on via the web while you're at work or away from home anytime? I guess it would have to be some kind of wireless connection signal transmission thingy?

Home Security: The doors currently on my house would be laughably easy to break through. I'm planning to replace them with solid wood doors with metal strips reinforcing the jamb, and serious deadbolts (with long screws securing them.) Is there anything I'm missing (so far as securing doors go)? [more inside]

I recently purchased my first home. It's in a neighborhood that used to be a little sketchy (Seattle's Rainier Beach), but is now relatively safe. Here's the thing: some of my neighbors still have bars on their windows. Others have security systems. Should I? Do they really help? Or is it just dwindling hysteria?

The back of my house faces an alley. There is no fence or gate. Someone loves to take my hanging flower baskets or even vegetables from my garden boxes. I would like to get a weather-proof wireless camera to start snapping away when someone enters the field of view. What brands or technologies should I look at? -I'd also like to beam the images to my home PC which would be about 50-75 feet away from where I want to put the camera.

I am looking for the definative method for determining if my machine has been hacked. I don't trust antivirus software and was thinking of looking into packet sniffers but wasn't sure if that was the place to start.

I live in a sorta gritty urban area in a ground-floor apartment that has semi-burglar-accessible windows that have no bars or gates. (The landlord is a cheap slum-owning pig, no help.) What should I install myself for serious home security that'll still let me enjoy a nice breeze and also peace of mind and body? Alarms? Internal bars? Any fave products? Money is almost no object, but I'd really rather not have to use a hammer drill on the exterior brick. (Question anonymous for ParanoiaFilter because my name is in my profile and also in the phone book with my address, and I'm a terribly sensible gal.)

So we were burglarized sometime today while we were at work. My wife came home and found the front door open and the rooms completely tossed, just like in the movies. In some ways we're counting ourselves lucky, because they only took two cameras, a couple bottles of vodka, and our fire safe. On the other hand, the safe contained basically everything about us- our passports, our Social Security cards, marriage certificate, titles to the condo and car, photocopies of our credit cards(in case the originals were stolen, natch), bank account info, etc. Two questions: 1) are we fucked? 2) burglar alarm systems...yea or nay?
