My partner and I moved in together last year and we are lucky enough to each have room of our own in addition to our master bedroom. We decided to add a built-in Murphy bed and bookshelves to my room (for guests) as it had the better layout for that. I use my room as a home office and it’s perfect for that purpose. [more inside]
Years ago, I couldn't resist purchasing a huge, multi-colored, very shaggy area rug, and I'd like to keep using it in our main room. We need to get a runner for our entryway, but it will sit very near this rug, and I cannot figure out what color and texture will work best. I spend a lot of time in this room, and will look at these rugs side-by-side all the time. I don't want them to look awful together. Can it be done? [more inside]
The window in our new apartment living room is 66" wide and 72" high. I am looking for a curtain and can't find anything except shower curtains in the width. Searching for "wide curtains" yields curtains that are too wide (like 84" or 96"), and I wasn't able to find panels narrow enough to do the job with two of them. The window is right up against the corner of the room on one side, so I can't just extend the curtain beyond the width of the window to accomodate a greater width. Any advice?
Our old farmhouse was remodeled in the 50s and as a result, the living room is seriously something like 35 x 20 in some spots, while others are 'only' 15 feet wide. We moved here from a house that could fit IN our current living room. It's freaking me out. I'd really like to make the house, our living room especially, seem more cozy. What are some ideas or hacks to make this happen? I see lots of tips on how to make rooms seem bigger, but not so many to make the walls feel like they're closing in on you.
My husband and I are traveling to Sweden soon. We both love Scandinavian design and would like to visit some furniture/home decor shops while in Sweden. What are some good, not too expensive furniture shops to visit in Stockholm and Sundsvall? We're interested in both local chains (Ikea not included) and boutique shops. Is it possible to buy furniture there and have the shop ship them to the US for you? Are the shipping costs generally reasonable? Thanks!

After sorting through a castle of boxes, I discovered hundreds and hundreds of loose photographs. The photographs vary in size from 3 x 5 to 8 x 10 and even a few 10 x13's. I have many albums, and they are full. I have several photograph boxes, also full. I would like to display as many as I can without being obnoxious but I'm looking for fresh ideas. I'm slow. It took me many years to have this revelation re: home organization: "If an object is not frequently used and is not decorative, it should be put away" (unless, of course, you have incredibly little storage space). So what's the next revelation? Or some corollaries of this one which might flesh out this basic idea?
I want to mount narrow shelves at the back of my kitchen counters, along the top of the backsplash. I have not been able to find anything suitable to match the dark decor. We are in the midst of a kitchen renovation project, and our cabinets arrived. We ordered victorian white, which looked off white in the showroom, but now that it's in our kitchen the cabinets have a pinkish hue. Pink was not what we were looking for. We're doing absolute black honed granite counter tops, and are trying to decide on what color to paint the room and ideas for the backsplash. Here's a link to a picture of the cabinets. The question: how can we subdue, or neutralize the pinkish hue?
