New apartment seems mold-prone

I moved during the summer and have noticed that my new place seems to attract mold at a higher rate than other places I've lived. I'm wondering if these things should be a cause for concern, or if these are just normal things given the specific situations. [more inside]

Hi. Can someone suggest ways to clean our home rug and bathroom. the rug itself has been in use for over 20 years and has now grayed with dirt and compressed down. The picture shows a side by side of when the rug was new (a bed was under this area so it was untouched). [more inside]

Help me not feel like the most incompetent housewife on the block.

We just bought a new three-story house with 2,900 square feet of gorgeous dark hardwood floors that make every single tiny speck of dust stand out (and we're about to get a short-haired, light-colored dog). How the hell do I keep this place clean without going crazy? [more inside]

Help me clean my couch

We have a two-year old sofa that looks terrible and needs to be cleaned. The upholstery is 100% light-colored polyester that looks like linen. The problem is that any water leaves a very noticeable ring on the fabric. Although we're pretty good about keeping food and drinks off the couch, we have a very drippy-nosed greyhound who has left dozens of little drip marks all over the cushions. Cleaning with water and a wet rag only makes the problem worse. I also tried using Goddard's Dry Cleaning fluid (a solvent), which just left a whitish spot. Any suggestions? Would hiring a professional do the trick?

What do I look for in a good carpet cleaner?

How do I evaluate different carpet cleaning options for my house? Everything seems to be skeevy door-to-door guys hawking chemical treatments and I used to recall steam cleaning being the way it was done when I was a kid (is that kind still around?). The yellow pages and general local review sites offer no help in picking one of a dozen options. Also, about how much is a normal price for a 3-4 bedroom average house, ballpark range? [more inside]

Are gas stoves supposed to produce a sticky residue?

I know a couple of folks with gas stoves, and they have trouble with a sticky residue coating their walls and ceiling around the range. They describe it as inherent to cooking with gas. (It's really disgusting.) Yet other folks I know who cook with gas don't report any such problems. Is this a known problem? Any idea why it would affect some people, but not others? Different types of gas (natural vs. propane)? Badly-tuned stoves? Something they're cooking? [more inside]

Cleaning person in Northwest Chicago Suburbs? Recommendations?

Price is a factor, but I'd like to start with a 1 time trial and deep clean, and then see about monthly cleanings. I have a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1200 sq ft condo which gets pretty messy because I'm traveling every week and my roommate doesn't always keep up. Molly Maids says the cost would be between 80-95 dollars for a monthly cleaning, I'd prefer it to be around 60 bucks. For the first cleaning I'm willing to spend up to 150 bucks. Any suggestions?

Litter Me This

I use Fresh Step Premium Cat Litter and a Littermaid litter box for my two cats. Recently, when emptying the vacuum cleaner and cleaning the AC filters, I have realized just how much litter dust there is in the air. I really like the scoopability of the brand I'm using, but I'd like to find another type of cat litter that works well with the Littermaid, yet doesn't stir up so much dust all the time. Got any recommendations?

Has anyone used a Dyson, or the DC07?

After living together for four years, my sig other and I are ready to take the plunge - and buy a good vacuum cleaner. We have a dog, she has allergies, I googled and quickly came up with the Dyson DC07 'Animal', which has 5 stars on Amazon but which costs $500. Simple? Well, other reviews, including some other Amazon reviews, say it's a bit of a dog, and one accuses Dyson of padding the reviews with their PR material. Has anyone used a Dyson, or the DC07?
