Give more quitting notice during the holidays?

I'm likely going to be able to accept a new job (Yes, no resigning until I have a written offer, I know) but I am concerned about giving only 2 weeks notice during the holidays. For example, if I resigned 12/17 and my last day is 1/31, no one will be working for most of those two weeks. I supervise 6-7 other social workers and an intern; if I leave during a break I worry that they will not have A. heard about it and B. been able to sort of make any coverage plans. I know I'm not irreplaceable; I just don't want to burn bridges. [more inside]

Turkey or house?

Do people generally go house hunting Thanksgiving weekend? I had planned on doing Thanksgiving on Saturday (it is the ONLY day we can), but now that our house is on the market, I fear we may have to forgo it this year.

Toddler holiday gift that can be used up

My nephew is one and a half years old. (He's a real toddler, not a baby anymore--runs around all over the place.) His grandparents (and other gift givers) inundate him with toys, and his parents are starting to feel beleaguered by the well-meaning deluge. Since he's not quite old enough to be put out if I give him something purely utilitarian, my primary gift this year is clothes. However, I'd like to give him one gift that is purely for his enjoyment, and which can be used up (but isn't food), so it's not just another thing that sits on the (increasingly crowded) toyshelf after the holidays are over. Do such things exist? Can you think of suitable gifts that fit those criteria? A couple more thoughts inside. [more inside]

How to support a relative post-bariatric surgery during the holidays?

I have a relative with some long-time food and weight issues who just underwent bariatric surgery. Making meals with her, cooking and eating out have always been kind of fraught. We'll be having a family Christmas holiday at her house and I'm worried that the heavy emphasis on food will be stressful. Any tips? [more inside]

I'm not on this diet to alienate you, I promise!

I'm on a diet that many (most) people would consider very restrictive if not downright odd. It's for health reasons, though I don't have any visible health or weight issues. I'm going to be spending several days with my boyfriend visiting his family over the holidays, and I'm dreading trying to navigate the weird food issues that will likely arise. If you are on a specific diet, how do you get around not eating various things that people are expected to eat (especially around the holidays)? [more inside]

Homemade Peppermint Ice Cream Pops?

This has been the Year Of Learning How To Make Ice Cream And Ice Pops. With certain holidays looming on the horizon, I have been searching to no avail, for a recipe for peppermint ice cream pops. I made a successful peppermint ice cream with crushed candy canes...but not sure if shoehorning the product of an ice cream maker into pop molds would really work properly. Do any MeFi Ice Cream Mavens have tips for me?

What should we do in Spain/Andorra/Northern Morocco... in the winter?

My girlfriend and I plan to go to Spain, leaving Christmas day and coming back a few days after New Years. We are interested in both activities and places it's just nice to be for a while. I'm sorry I don't feel pain the way you think I should, but...

A couple of weeks ago, I moved out of my marital home (details in my posting history). Whilst I seem to be doing okay, most people expect me to not be. In fact, they seem to expect a fragility and sadness from me that I'm not feeling even remotely. This has lead to some judgements from people that I could have done without. How can I navigate the sympathy of folks during the holiday season without having to pretend to be an emotional mess (which I'm not) and without suffering judgement from people who don't know the whole story (Which I can happily live without). Where can we take a winter vacation in the Pacific Northwest?

My girlfriend and I live in Portland, Oregon. We'd like to take a week-long vacation over Christmas, and are looking for somewhere to visit in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, BC, or western Montana. Roaming in the gloaming

I'm planning a holiday in Scotland this August with a friend. We'd like to incorporate a few days (anything up to a week) of walking. Ideally, we'd like to go on a guided walk organised by a tour company - the kind where you stay in B&Bs/guest houses each night and the tour company organises transportation of your luggage during the day. The level of walking should be of the easy-to-moderate rather than super-challenging: the goal is to appreciate the beautiful Scottish landscape rather than undertake a strenuous physical challenge. I've googled tour companies that offer this kind of thing, but I was wondering if any mefites have specific recommendations for UK-based tour companies offering this kind of holiday? Or any particular advice?
