We're heading to Croatia for a week at the end of August, probably staying around the Split area. Your recommendations for accommodation and sightseeing would be appreciated. [more inside]
In September Ms J0 and I would like to travel to either Portland (Oregon) or Quebec City. We would like to stay for 5 or so days. We can get to Portland for less than half the cost of getting to Quebec City. So, help us decide, please. [more inside]
I'm planning a trip to China during September, which ends in Hong Kong. I'm arriving in HK on 29 Sept and leaving on 3 Oct - right around the start of the National Day holiday. Is this a bad idea? [more inside]
I'm going away for the long weekend with 6 friends (we are 4 girls and 3 guys, from mid-twenties to early thirties). We've got a sweet house booked in a nearby country town and we plan on doing a bit of wandering around town, but mostly holing up in the house in front of the open fire, drinking wine, playing board games and enjoying each other's company. I'm looking for awesome ideas of fun stuff to bring and/or do. Drinking games, non-drinking games, things we can cook or bake, challenges for the weekend, that sort of thing. I'm thinking pancakes, I'm thinking blanket fort... anything that works with 7 people and is fun, throw it at me!
I'm a single woman who will be celebrating her 40th birthday this December. I've decided to go away, specifically on a scuba trip. (I plan to get certified in May.) Please help me plan a single friendly birthday scuba trip. [more inside]
Heading to Malta in a few weeks, but not very sure where to stay. Valletta or one of the tourist areas? [more inside]
I have been seeing someone for approx 3 months. It’s exclusive and I feel as though he’s quite into it but at the same time our relationship so far has not been intense at all, quite the opposite and we have both been taking it slowly. [more inside]
Aside from Miami, does Florida have any place that has a culture not predominantly catering to retirees, families, or tourists? I'm an early thirties guy looking to spend a weekend somewhere in the state with a friend that's interesting, authentic, and youthful. Being near water is a nice to have, but not a requirement. [more inside]
I'm planning to take a month of holiday in May or June, and want to find a cheap remote destination anywhere in the world where I can rent a small place and just hang out and read books and unwind. My perfect day there would be lounging around in a hammock/garden/isolated beach, reading, drinking a cappuccino and eating bread and cheese. Maybe I'd go for a little walk. Please give me your suggestions for destinations, including specific rental options if you have any. [more inside]
I have recently been diagnosed with a serious health condition which means after a few months I might not be able to go on holiday for many years. I want to go on Holiday and my bf doesn't. DTMF? [more inside]
I'm in my early twenties. Whenever I come home during breaks in school, I find the atmosphere at home unbearably stressful. It's so bad that my sister (who is in college and also comes home for breaks) and I prefer to stay literally paralyzed with anxiety in bed all day or either leave the house for most of the day. It mostly boils down to the fact that we can get yelled at for almost anything we do. There is no way to win-- I will get yelled at or criticized or caught in some argument over the most ridiculous thing no matter what I do. Alternatively, I will have to watch my siblings get yelled at for something equally innocuous. My siblings and I walk on eggshells all day. It's exhausting. But I love my parents. I already don't see them very much and I just want to enjoy the time I have with them. How can I better do this? Any tips or strategies to reduce the stress? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have won a week's holiday in Paris over the new year period. Flights, bed, and breakfast are covered -- how can we stretch our food and entertainment budget? [more inside]
We just decided to drive from SF to Seattle via Portland for about a week. What are some fun family things to do? Places to eat? Places to stay? Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
Spending Xmas at a shared ski condo, and not sure how to plan. Apparently folks share the (poorly equipped) kitchen, so I can't monopolize it for hours on end, and people don't usually share meals. [more inside]
Vegetarians of MeFi! What are you having for Christmas dinner? I am totally capable with vegetarian dishes in general, but most of them are rather light and don't seem substantial enough to be a Christmas dinner. So what are you having? [more inside]

In a few hours I'm about to board a flight that was supposed to include my girlfriend. except she broke up with me last month and now I'm flying alone and demoralized. How do I not make this trip suck more than it already does? [more inside]
So, after decades of basically ignoring them, I'm finally getting into the spirit of enjoying classic Christmas songs. But I don't know much about them. I know many of them have been covered literally hundreds of times. As a starting point, I'd like to better understand which versions of popular Christmas songs have been MOST popular over time. Looking for a place to buy an ugly or garish holiday sweater somewhere in the east San Fernando Valley, to wear to an office party. Thrift stores have apparently stopped receiving them because people are saving them to wear ironically. Somewhere in the east San Fernando Valley, preferably near North Hollywood would be preferred. Also preferably not too expensive as I only plan on wearing this thing once (maybe again for our family get-together.) The uglier the better!
Where in NYC can I order a printing of 250 photo cards with the quickest turnaround? I'm talking like 24-48 hours. Can pay $$$. [more inside]
I really like holiday gift guides, which combine the illusion of thoughtful shopping with the ruthless efficiency of the internet. It's easy to find guides from popular websites and publications, but surely there are more and weirder out there on the web. What is your favorite 2013 gift guide? What are the most interesting gift guides from blogs and niche publications? [more inside]
I love shutterfly and tinyprints but this year I'm thinking I'd prefer to send a holiday card that is a little more understated or traditional--what do I do? [more inside]
I seem to remember a couple of years ago there was a post on the blue about a Northern European Yule spirit that would fish the bad children out of their houses using a meat hook, and either flay them, eat them, or both. Does this ring a bell to you? [more inside]
My husband, who grew up with Lionel trains, would like to get a new set for the holidays. We have a 1 bedroom apartment, so we're not doing an entire set up. We have no kids, so it doesn't have to be Thomas, but I'm at a loss between O-Gauge and G-Gauge and all the different options! Does anyone have advice? [more inside]
A friend mentioned they were not to call AAA today about their car problems because it's a holiday and they don't want to inconvenience anybody. Would this really inconvenience people?
How can I better handle the dreaded company holiday party without freaking out? [more inside]
I am required to bring a "word of the day" to my Toastmasters club's next meeting. This word should be an interesting and useful word that will expand everyone's command of the English language and ideally would be fun to use. Twist: I want it to be Thanksgiving or holiday season related if possible. My google-fu is failing me because I keep getting results meant for children's crossword puzzles ("pilgrim", "turkey", etc.). I'm looking for something more along the lines of "puritanical" or something like that. Can be historical, related to feelings or gratitude or even satirical of the holiday.
I've been asked to show up at the office for the four weekdays between Xmas and January 1 -- AGAIN. But the boss is taking vacation. More drama inside. [more inside]
Every year I look forward to BBC Radio's Christmas music specials (especially choral concerts), including the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve. In 2005 the Beeb broadcast a concert called 'Carols by Candlelight' by the Chapter House Choir that was delightful. And so every year, I scan the schedules of the various BBC Radio services to see what I can find, but I invariably miss something or other (I'm in the US, btw). For all you radioheads in the UK: is there an all-in-one place to go that has a complete list of that kind of thing?
Help me write clever holiday cards. [more inside]
I'm looking for smart ways to consolidate, organize, and share tourism information for people who visit me and for places that my partner and I might visit. [more inside]
How is driving on I-95 on Christmas and New Year's Day? [more inside]
We will be hosting a very large Yule gathering in our home next month, and I need ideas on ways to feed people affordably but impressively with simple but very elegant dishes. We set the bar pretty high last year, so the H is O. [more inside]
I will be in Paris for a week and some change between Christmas and New Years. I've been before so I know all the standard tourist spots- but I know the holiday season will mess up openings and closings so I'm interested in fun, interesting things and places ...that will be open. Ideally looking for performances, music, English-language theater, etc. I'll be traveling with a classical musician with a fondness for opera, so looking for things along those lines. Any seasonally specific events or things I shouldn't miss?
We want to go somewhere sunny this winter. There are a bewildering number of travel websites hocking flight+hotel deals. Did you have a good experience with any of them? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I are looking for a holiday that will allow us to have a mixture of chilling out in a nice hotel or resort, but also put us in range of museums and galleries and restaurants and interesting day-trips. [more inside]
I'm interested in passing Christmas (24/25 December) somewhere that does not celebrate Christmas at that time. The shops and monuments should be open, the people should be doing their thing, and life should be going on more-or-less as normal. For a number of reasons, I'm particularly interested in doing this in a place that celebrates the Orthodox Christmas (6/7 January). Have any of you spent the holiday season in such a country? Which one? What was going on during the 24/25 Dec? Would you recommend visiting? I'm also curious to hear about your New Year's experiences in those places, but it is less important. (If you have a really awesome idea in another region I'll hear you out for the sake of others who may have a similar question.)
My family wants to have Thanksgiving in a central location for all of us. We've also talked in the past about renting a big house for all of us to get together in a beach town off season. Any suggestions on towns and/or specific properties or agencies that will result in a good holiday for all of us? [more inside]
Husband and I need a holiday. Problem is, we won't have much money because we've just bought a house, which came with a lot of bills. Suggestions for weekends away for the next few weeks or short breaks in September school holidays, leaving from Melbourne, Victoria, that cost less than $180/night? Complication-- I'm 19 weeks pregnant. [more inside]
I'm going to Sydney for a weekend and I'm looking for your recommendations of reasonably cheap accommodation - either cheapish hotels or hostels. I'm not looking for anywhere with a party vibe, but I'm open to suggestions apart from that. Ta!
A friend and I are planning a month-long roadtrip down the West coast of the United States - starting in Oregon, and possibly going so far as to cross Texas and finish up in Louisiana somewhere - to take place sometime in the new year, and we'd appreciate some advice in re: must-sees and logistics. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I plan to go to Spain, leaving Christmas day and coming back a few days after New Years. We are interested in both activities and places it's just nice to be for a while. Spain is the primary destination here, but we're open to side trips into Andorra and/or Morocco. And, hey, how about the Baleric Islands? [more inside]
I am organising a specialty holiday in Malaga, Spain for a fortnight this September. An awesome chef has come on board. Now what? [more inside]

I'm interested in booking a cruise with some friends for a New Year's Eve vacation.
