We need indoor holiday decorating ideas that can survive our cat's whirlwind of curious destruction. [more inside]
I just learned that in 2006, Steven Colbert challenged his fans to mash up Beatles songs with Christmas songs. I found a couple on YouTube, but can see that there was once a site with a whole collection of the mashups, titled the "White Christmas Album." All the links for it that I've Googled seem to be dead or otherwise sketchy. Can anyone point me to a source to download the collection? Thanks!
My husband loves craft beer, so for his birthday next March, I am planning to take him on a surprise trip to San Diego. He loves Stone, so a visit there is definitely on the cards. Does anyone have suggestions of the best places to go for beer, preferably with good IPAs and/or stouts? [more inside]
For Christmas my wife is interested in a pair of the upcoming Puma by Rihanna velvet creepers. I know that the previous releases in this line have sold out in hours. Now that it has been named Shoe of the Year and this release is dropping in primo holiday shopping season (December 8th) I assume this new set will be even harder to get. My questions are (1) How can I increase my chances of snagging a pair of these shoes online as part of the official sale? and (2) If strategy (1) fails, are there sneakerhead resellers where I can buy a pair after the fact for not too much of a premium on the purchase price? Where can I go on such short notice? [more inside]
They used to have motion dolls years ago......like angles, and carolers, who moved back and forth holding candles, and some lit up and some played music. All I can find is Telco and Rennoc as company names for these dolls. But they are all used on e-bay. I think they were called motion-ettes. [more inside]
Wondering if anyone had any ideas/recommendations for a warm destination to go over New Year's? [more inside]
My father in law has end stage terminal cancer and intends to die at home--talking days/weeks. My wife and I will be going for a Thanksgiving visit in a couple of weeks with our 2.5 year old, who loves her grandfather very much. He is not going to be in good shape, and may well pass away while we're there. Help?! [more inside]
I'm in grad school in New York, he's working in Wyoming. We've got from Dec 16-Jan 1 to plan an awesome adventure. I love planning. He hates planning. He'd like a option presented to him in full detail that he can happily agree to. [more inside]
Help me figure out what we should be doing on or around the week of Culture Day in Tokyo. [more inside]
I'm trying to think about what to do for the Christmas-New Years-Early January Birthday period this year. Every year I get stressed out and exhausted thinking about all the planning buying all the presents, doing all the cleaning & decorating and such that I don't really get around to anything and the actual days in question are kind of let downs. Then I feel regret and wish I could get a re-do. Trying to avoid it all this year. Any thoughts? [more inside]
My partner and I are going on holiday to New York from the 5th-11th November. Yay! It's a big trip for us for lots of reasons, including a couple of milestone birthdays, his being on the 7th which is why we're travelling then. What we didn't figure in was the NY Marathon being held on the day after we arrive, and something about an election or something on the 8th idk apparently I've been on Mars? So in addition to the usual questions I'd like advice on navigating these events please. [more inside]
We are going to be in London and Edinburgh at Christmas and New Years, but don't fly back to Canada until Jan. 21. Where should we go where our Canadian dollars go further than they do in the UK? [more inside]
Recommend somewhere warm and beautiful in the Caribbean, adults only, 4-5 star, all inclusive. Prefer something off the beaten path/lesser known. [more inside]
I'm planning a trip to celebrate holidays, partly with my girlfriend and partly with my mother, and I'm having a communication / conflict issue between the two. Can you help? Details inside... [more inside]
So I'm about to take my son to London on a father and son trip. We've been once before and loved it. We went on the river bus, to the Natural History Museum (scary animatronic T-rex!), Science Museum and to Grenwich to see the Cutty Sark. We saw the changing of the guard. We had a WHALE of a time. I had an interview for an exciting startup today and got emailed straight away saying they really enjoyed meeting me and would like to invite me to the final round of interviews on Friday. In September I am going to one of my closest friend's weddings in Japan, and will be away for ten days. I am worried they will not be happy about this, what do I say and when? [more inside]
I need to book myself a holiday but, never having travelling abroad, I'm a bit at a loss to figure out where I want to go. Given my list of requirements, can the Hive Mind suggest where I should start looking? [more inside]
We're going to Corsica for two weeks at the end of September/beginning of October. Recommendations? [more inside]
We've finally saved up enough money to go on a little holiday, hopefully abroad, meaning outside the UK. The thing is, we have a five year old and a one year old, so the things we might like to do to have a relaxing holiday don't really apply as sitting relaxing beside a pool or on the beach with a book or newpaper simply wouldn't work. We also can't go somewhere really hot as our one year old would disapprove. We would never go to a "resort" and stay in a huge holiday complex whether we had young children or not! [more inside]
My 4th of July plans seem to have exploded, and I'm trying to make a backup plan. Since it's a 3-day weekend, I'd like to go camping somewhere—but I'm expecting that all the decent campsites are going to be packed and I'd really like to avoid that. Do you have any suggestions for where I could go with a couple of friends to enjoy a little camping without having to deal with too many other people? [more inside]
My wife and I will be in Greece this summer from June 18-July 9. We're flying in and out of Athens. Aside from staying in the capital for a few days, we're not sure how to narrow down where else to go. If you were us (priorities after the jump), which destinations would you choose? [more inside]
Campervanning family holiday in Scotland in early May. Yay! I've googled like mad and bought a guide book, but what's really worth seeing? And what aren't they telling me? In other words: what less obvious things, places, foods, sweets, experiences, etc. would you recommend? This is free form, anything goes. [more inside]
We are set to spend a week in July at Lake Okoboji with my in-laws. We have a toddler. Any tips? [more inside]
It's getting colder and darker here in Australia and in an effort to prevent the winter blues I will be taking a two week holiday in early June. Where in the world should I go that is a) sunny and b) not humid? [more inside]
I just survived my first Northern European winter. I am originally from the Gulf Coast US. I need some heat. Where should I go? [more inside]
Between 21 June and 18 July I will have finished school and not yet started work. I want to get away, outside, for some if not most of that time. I am based in Toronto. I like biking, hiking, walking, and being outside. I also like cities and reading books and sleeping in. Hope me please? [more inside]
I'm going to be spending ~5 days and 5 nights on New Zealand's North Island in the last week of March (after Easter). I'll be there with a friend. Can you help make our trip a little less vague than it currently is? Details under the cut. [more inside]
My extended family wants to do Christmas "away" this year. Looking for recommendations of awesome (and affordable) Xmas Away locales you have enjoyed. [more inside]
My mum wants to borrow my compact for using when we go on holiday. Sadly, the screen is broken and, as it's nine years old, I'm not sure whether a repair is viable. Can you suggest an easy to use digital camera (ie. for a complete tech novice) which I could pick up new or used cheaply to give to her? [more inside]
In late December, I managed to land myself an interview and a new job at an awesome small company (50-60 employees) in the space of 4 days. I start the new position on 1 February, but I've failed to mention that I have a two-week trip overseas already planned for mid-March, around Easter. Have I missed my window on telling my new employer about my holiday? Should I tell them now or wait until my first day? [more inside]
Hi! Can anyone recommend a holiday in mid January for two exhausted parents of a four year old and a one year old? We were thinking Centreparcs until we remembered it's based on a self-catering model and really could do with being cooked for for 5 days/a week! [more inside]
Every year, I bake about a billion cookies. Okay, more like two or three thousand, but it feels like a billion. I then deliver and ship them all over the world, to friends and family. Every year, I bake the same 6 cookie types, plus 2 additional rotating types that, if they're good enough, can be added to the repertoire for the following year. I need suggestions for this year's two new types. [more inside]
Looking for suggestions for holiday destinations, preferably in or near Europe, where we can escape internet access and also, ideally, mobile phone signals. If you can suggest specific accomodation, all the better. We are thinking of going away for about a week, but don't yet have a specific time of year in mind.
For years I gave gift cards to my nieces and nephews. Then they grew up, married and had kids of their own and I switched to giving to my great-nieces and -nephews. How to stop with minimal awkwardness? [more inside]
I'm going to be cranky this Christmas. Assume it's unavoidable and no ghosts will be visiting me to convince me otherwise. What should I watch, read, and do that will help me feel less alone in my crankiness? [more inside]
Having stumbled across the utterly delightful It's A Holiday Soul Party, I'm on the lookout for any interesting Christmas/holiday music. I've searched past questions, but would love to hear from folks this year! Nothing is off limits - we love everything from traditional to Klezmer Nutcracker to Vince Guaraldi to the South Park Christmas record (don't you judge me). Thanks so much!
I would like to hang holiday lights outdoors on a stucco exterior using magnets and hooks. Advice? [more inside]
My family will be joining me in the Boston area for Christmas this year, for the first time, for only a few days surrounding the 25th. If we were in NYC, near where I grew up, I'd know exactly what to do - see the windows, Rockefeller Ctr, St. Patrick's, the Grand Central train show...but I don't know what the Boston equivalents of these sightseeing traditions are. One caveat: Boston seems big on performing arts events for the holidays, and we probably aren't going to be able to coordinate schedules for ticketed events. I'm looking for things you can just drop in to. [more inside]
My favorite part of the holidays is the FOOD. I love all the rich, sweet, and special seasonal eats, and I love to make them for my people. Unfortunately, this year, I Just Can't. Thinking about planning and cooking is stressful rather than exciting right now. How can I make nomming as low key as possible in terms of planning/effort, but still awesome? Wanting specific suggestions for Thanksgiving, periChristmas, and New Year's. Family will be visiting at various points. This is in the U.S., and we have a Trader Joe's and a Costco nearby.
This will be my fourth winter living in a place that gets snow every winter. Every year I get VERY VERY excited when it snows for the first time. Other than squeeing joyfully, what is something I can do each year to celebrate the first snow of winter?
I'm looking for a great pre-filled advent calendar that I can order online. Ideally under $30, and I want a surprise variety of things! [more inside]
Two upcoming road trips for the holidays plus one young toddler who could make it all pretty miserable. Please share any tricks for keeping the little guy busy in the car. [more inside]
Our Indian neighbors have invited my family to their Diwali party on Saturday. I'm unsure of the etiquette that surrounds attending the festivities. Stuff I've read online mostly boils down to "bring a nice gift (not alcohol) and wear your good cloths.". Are there any no-no's that might be lurking so I can prepare myself and my children to be respectful of the holiday? Many of the articles I've read suggest high quality dried fruit as a gift. Are there good alternatives?
We are completely lost for ideas. The last 4 years our non-profit group has held our holiday party at a Thai restaurant, at which, 2 employees couldn't eat because, peanuts. Our budget is around $42 per person (give or take). We are 30 employees. We need a private room. We are located in West L.A. Staff is willing to travel as far south as Culver City-ish. [more inside]
I am about to be interviewed for a part-time seasonal, retail position. This would simply be something to supplement my main income, and very temporary. I have about 15 years of high level retail management experience that I gained prior to the full-time non-retail management position I now have. I heard that the hiring managers sometimes do not want to hire people who are vastly overqualified, so my question is this: Should I reveal how much retail experience I actually have, or should I try to downplay it?
Where should we go for a beach holiday from Boston in February? [more inside]
I'm looking for books about Canada, specifically Montreal, and also books set in Montreal. What would you recommend? [more inside]
I escaped a long-term abusive marriage homeless with a lot of hermit like attributes. It's been about three years of clawing and crawling out of that hole, and while I'm not completely out, I do have an apartment, job, friends, and enough money to feed me and my kid three squares a day. That deserves a celebration and I'm determined that I'm going to spend a long weekend with my best friend in London in December as a combo birthday/holiday gift to myself. I want to see Hyde Park done up for the holidays, do a Jack the Ripper tour, eat in a pub, and visit a museum [more inside]
