Under Pressure

How would you get through a black hole? I've been thinking about this one for a while, I've found some info about the possibility but not anything that gets into the mechanics.

Say we did find one of these "milder" singularities - presumably the gravity would still be almost neutron star crushing levels, what kind of ship/situation would we need to get through this? I was thinking maybe some kind of oxygenated liquid to inhale and fill the ship?

I have no idea. My physics knowledge is effectively nil. Help me, Mefites, you're my only hope!

How much does it cost to fix a doorknob-sized hole in drywall?

Doorknob went through the drywall. How much should this cost to repair? We live in an apartment in the suburbs of Chicago. There was no doorstop to keep the doorknob from going through the wall, so now there is a doorknob-sized hole in the drywall. We are moving out at the end of the month. How much should it cost to repair? Should we let the landlord fix it with the money from the deposit, should we hire someone to fix it, or should we try to do it ourselves?

Trying to buy the Hole 'MTV Unplugged' DVD onine - in vain.

Trying to buy the Hole 'MTV Unplugged' DVD online - in vain. My g/f is a long-time hardcore fan of the band Hole (well, up until the "Be A Man" video. My lady's got taste).

During her teens, she collected songs and videos through copies of copies of audio and VHS tapes through snail-mail -- now mostly unplayable. Among these bad VHSs was the MTV Unplugged.

She was able to find a digital version of that dearest concert on the Net, but it turns out to de-synch progressively, audio not matching video, all that.

She couldn't find the DVD sold online.

With her birthday approaching, I'm been having a look, and turns either can I, so far - both Amazon and my google-fu have proven weak on this.

So : anyone knows where I could buy a legit Region 2 (we're in France) DVD of Hole's 'MTV Unplugged' concert?

Thanks a lot for any pointer.

DenimFilter: Help me patch my trendy jeans.

DenimFilter: Help me patch the hole over the knee in my trendy designer jeans. So while shopping at my favorite retailer for jeans (Jimmy'Z), the only pair I liked had one of those frayed holes over the right knee. The "fray-zone" has now become a hole with an additional 2 inches or so of a tear to the side, making this about a 4 inch-wide hole when flattened.

What's the best way to go about patching this up before I have a new pair of cut-off shorts? I was thinking of something involving a denim patch on the inside of the jeans, so that the frayed part still shows a little bit. I had some old jeans/cordory that I could salvage for this project.

I'm a dude, that could probably discretely get access to sewing machines in the fashion dept. on campus-- but I wouldn't want to brag about it much and want to know what I'm doing if I try to DIY this one.

holesome bread (literally)

I'm following a recipe for bread I got from mom, but have ended up with too many loafs that look like this. What to do? The original recipe is half graham, half white flour, with lot of fresh yeast. The dough rises quickly, and is only allowed to sit for 2x10 minutes (the second time in the baking pans) and is then popped into an oven for 40 or so minutes at 200°C.

The first couple of times, I made it with rye fluor and the second attempt was successful and full of raisin goodness and such. But I can't get it to work with graham, and can't figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong; As you might be able to tell from the picture, the bottom of it is dense and wet. The only difference that I'm aware of is that our oven is of the hot-circulating-air kind as opposed to moms top-grill-thingy kind.

Help me save face and bring honour back to my family recipe!

I have an Intel Macbook with a fairly large 2" diameter black circle floating in the bottom right corner... move the mouse in and it disappears as well but you can move the mouse out again.
Cello hole repair

[LuthierFilter] So there's this hole in my beloved cello... Yesterday I slipped, fell, and landed on my (hard-cased) cello. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some distressing damage.

Can anyone out there in the Hive Mind give me any ballpark idea of what this might cost to repair, and what might be involved? Time frames /etc would be gratefully appreciated too. Alternatively, is this even repairable?

For reference, the instrument is fourteen years old, and bears the label of a known (but not renowned) Australian violin maker. Last verbal valuation I got was "oooh about $AU 20,000? Maybe more". Also, I understand there are a number of variables here -- I'm just after a rough idea of what might be involved, so that I am not entirely at the pointy end when Mr Expensive Repairer decides he needs a new car this year

What can I do to get rid of a deep but tiny scar on my cheek?

What can I do to get rid of a deep but tiny scar on my cheek? Around 8 years ago I had what I believed to be a blackhead pimple on my left cheek. The general practitioner made a small incision to make an opening and squeezed the 'Stuff' out. For a long time now that specific area has no pimple problems. For most of my life, my face is usually almost pimple free. Problem is: I have a permanent scar and it looks like a deep pimple hole. Yeah I know, people are starving out there somewhere and I'm worrying about a tiny scar...

Anyways, that doctor has told me I can't cover it up as it will create a blockage, and something to do with 'cist' forming. Any skin experts please advise!

I have considered, 'melting' that area or removing the skin (along with the hole) creating a new bigger scar that is Flat (by medical practitioners of course).

Any advice or recommendations are welcome!

What's up with my mouth?

Once in a while after mild to strenuous exercise, I can suck air through a little spot in the roof of my mouth (kinda just behind the "aveolar ridge"). There aren't any obvious holes up there. This happens fairly rarely. It's not particularly uncomfortable. What's going on here? Is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else? Please don't make fun. :(

RevoltingFilter: I have a hole in my face. It resembles a large blackhead, but is a permanent fixture. Out of curiosity, I stuck a pin in it to gauge its depth. To my horror, amazement and admiration, it was 8mm deep. What on earth is this thing?

Make my hole bigger!

How do I make a deadbolt hole in a door wider? I bought a brand new fancy expensive deadbolt lock for my new apartment, a Medeco Maxum to be exact. The problem is, the old hole for an old deadbolt which I never had the key for is 1/2" too small for the new mechanism. I have a semi-powerful cordless drill, and the appropriate hole bits to drill out the lock, but I cant get any sort of leverage or pull to be able to drill through the wood sandwiched on either side with metal. The drill bit is for metal/wood and is similar to this, where there is a large hole bit, and a smaller bit inside to initially drill and pull the rest of the bit through the wall straight.

Now I ask you, metafilter, what's the best way to widen this hole? My ideas thus far have been:
- Fill the hole with bondo or similar and see if I can drill it out like that.
- Screw a bit of wood in a T shape with the bottom of the T going through the hole, and then nail/screwing the top of the T to the outside of the door and drilling into that.

Thats all I got. Is there a better/proven way to do this? Should I fill and forget about this old hole? There's already a second lock, and a doorknob, and the old deadbolt is in a good place, anywhere else and it would be awkward.

Ceiling Cable Is Making Me Frustrated.

Ceiling Cable Is Making Me Frustrated. I need a downstairs coax-cable outlet, but the only outlet in the house is on the second floor. The original owner solved this problem by drilling a hole in the floor and running the coax through it, so the cable now dangles from a hole in the first-floor ceiling. Here's a picture (the cable on the second floor currently runs to a splitter, and then goes into the fire-caulked hole).

1. How do I install a second coax outlet on the ground floor, when the only outlet in the house is on the second floor?

2. Is there a way or a telescoping tool to thread the cable through the wall without tearing out a section of drywall?

3. Recommendations for contractors in or near the East Bay (Berkeley, California) who specialize in this sort of thing would be appreciated.

BodyFilter: I have a pin-sized hole in my head. What the hell? Ever since... for ever, I have had a naturally-made hole just in front of my right ear. It is the width of a pin, and goes in at least three centimetres. It looks like I've had my ear pierced, but the hole goes into my head rather than through my ear. Every few days, I can squeeze white *stuff* out of it that has the consistency of ear wax - but isn't. What on earth is it?
