The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory claims that the hand placed on top of the broom is the dominant hand and the hand on the bottom is the non-dominant hand. However, my sister and I are both right handed and hold brooms the opposite way. We can't imagine holding it the other way because the dominant hand should go on the bottom to control the broom better. Does anyone have any data on which way a broom is held for people of either handedness? Also, which way are other stick objects like spears and hockey sticks supposedly held?

So imagine you attended a private Pennsylvania University. You received your diploma and all the certified transcripts you needed for your job search. Now, 4 years later, you ask for another transcript but are told there is a hold on your account because they think you owe over $1,000 due to a mistake they apparently made six years ago. Phone calls, emails, certified mail have all failed to get action, and you NEED the transcript, but you don't have that kind of money.
What are your rights in this case? Can they just hold your transcript hostage?
Ideas? Anyone? this is extremely frustrating!

Is there an equation for figuring out the average wait time for a book on hold at the library. Or how to figure out the average wait time I have left for a book I put on hold because I'm dying to read the rest of it. [more inside]

After sitting on hold with United for a few hours during this latest travelpocalypse, I've become deeply curious about the science of the music used when a caller is placed on hold. For example, at United, the hold music is "Rhapsody in Blue". Rather than being a lovely full recording of the piece, it is an incredibly scratchy partial recapitulation of the main theme that sounds as if it is being played on a phonograph. It skips, stops and starts, and sounds just terrible. But I found myself wondering, is the annoyance to keep the caller on edge? Are those sometimes looong skips and stops designed to keep me paying attention? While these observations come from United, I've noticed the same thing at other companies. Is there a real reason behind this?
