La Commedia è finita - can the music go on?

So, dealing with the many ins and outs of caring for an ailing grandfather who's on his way out, I've come across one problem that the green might have an answer to. Said grandfather has been an audiophile all of his life and his front room is full of records and cds of opera, symphonies, concertos, cantatas, greatest hits of individual singers, etc. Is there anything we can do now so that his beloved music collection can go somewhere other than the trash when he dies? Downsizing and de-cluttering when you love 'stuff'!

When I look around my house I see a lot of 'things' that are beautiful or useful, but that I don't actually make use of. I feel a deep urge to purge, but also have that worry that sometime in the future I will miss these 'things.' Any advice on how to proceed? [more inside]

Help Me Help A Sensitive Pack Rat

How can I help my sister declutter? She's in her 40's, still living in the house she shared with my parents, both of whom have died. She is a very sensitive person and will get offended and push back hard and usually has a reason why she can't do things. I don't think I am being controlling, but she is sleeping on the couch because the house is a disaster (there are FIVE bedrooms, but the clutter and filth is too much) and it's keeping me awake at night worrying about her. She does have a job but it doesn't pay well and the house is much bigger than she needs or can afford (she is in a very expensive city). More detail inside (maybe more than necessary, but since it's anonymous...) [more inside]

How do you do an intervention for depression and/or hoarding?

My sister recently did something completely out of character - she failed to pay taxes on a family property which led to it being sold at auction. She never told anyone about this, she lied for at least two years, and it affected everyone in the family. I think this is a cry for help. I know I could reach out to her and ask but I think she needs something more dramatic to make her realize that she has hurt a lot of people (including herself) with her behavior and actions. I think an intervention is appropriate but I don't know the best way to do it. [more inside]

Therapist or Organizer for a hoarding parent?

My father died a week ago and due to the present circumstances, I was able to get my mother to agree to see someone about her hoarding. She is willing to confront it and realizes it is an issue, but part of getting her to agree to this was me volunteering to find someone to help. I have found multiple resources and would appreciate any advice on who I should be contacting first about this. (Special Snowflake, yada yada, you know the rest) [more inside]

Hoarding and endless grief for lost things

I have major hoarding problems, co-morbid with depression and anxiety, for extra fun and challenge. This is further complicated by the fact that I often grieve for lost, broken or discarded things endlessly, and the feelings never seem to heal. These feelings add to my depression and inhibit dealing with the hoarding issues. Can anyone offer advice not so much on how to get rid of items but on how to deal with sustained distress from having done so? [more inside]

Chihuahua Puppy Guides?

In the wake of a recent hoarding incident in Pennsylvania a local shelter has a large number of chihuahuas who will soon be needing permanent homes. I have previous experience dogsitting a family member's chihuahua for long periods of time so I know how to take care of adults, but some puppies are also available for adoption and I think that might be a rewarding experience. Everyone in the household has experience with dogs, but we have not raised a puppy. I was wondering if you could link me to the best guides for what to expect and how to raise a puppy, and specifically for the unique challenges of a chihuahua puppy. [more inside]

What can be done with 6,000+ hard-copy books and a forensic engineer's lifetime paper collection in the "Age of Information"?

Is there a person or organization which will pick up and make productive use of a (non-famous) engineer/scientist's lifelong collection of books and papers? The local university libraries and relevant engineering organizations no longer accept hard-copy materials. I'm living across the country, and the family can't keep paying storage cube rental after my father's death. It's going to have to be an all-or-nothing donation in the next two or three months, or everything gets sent to a landfill. The storage facility is in the Ann Arbor, MI (USA) area - please see the extended explanation for details. [more inside]
