Point Me to Good Histories of Ancient India

I need recommendations for histories of ancient India, with particular emphasis on the role/influence of the Hellenic states, development of Buddhism, what might have happened to the Indo-Greeks in the longer term, etc. Also, it would be interesting to read about Alexander's invasion and its aftermath from the Indian viewpoint, i.e, by Indian scholars using Indian sources.

What Happened To the Descendants of Famous Historical Figures?

Are there any published works that attempt to trace the descendants of famous historical figures, especially those we read about in ancient history? For example, Cleopatra had children by Julius Ceasar and Marc Antony. One of her daughters was married off to Jubal, king of Numidia and Mauretania. What became of their children? Looked at another way, who among those alive today can trace their lineage to the most distant dates? Royal families would seem to have the advantage here, but not necessarily.

Recommend a Brief Overview History of India

Can anyone recommend a brief overview history of India? Preferably something with a bit of personality rather than a History of India 101 textbook. I picked up a nice copy of John Keay's India: A History some time ago, but my preference when diving into something I know nothing about is to first give myself a bit of context.
