Balancing banked leave, yearly bonuses, signing bonuses, and rapid hiring?

How do I balance an accelerated hiring timeline, banked vacation time, and an upcoming bonus? I'm expecting to be offered a job, and the hiring manager wants someone in the role in days-not-weeks. The performance year at my current job is just wrapping up, and bonuses won't be paid out until mid-October. I also want to take the vacation time I've earned. How can I make this work best for me? How much information can I share with the prospective manager? I really have no interest in continuing my current position, but don't want to miss out on the new one simply for a bonus. On the other hand, I god damned earned this yearly bonus, and it has the potential to be sizable (~10% annual gross). Ideally, I'd be able to negotiate for a signing bonus and still collect my pending bonus, but I worry that telling my prospective boss to delay his plans in order to collect an extra check won't get him excited about giving me a signing bonus. Should I reveal my intentions and negotiate for an extra-fat signing bonus to get me onboard?

And how do I balance my vacation time? I've got ~3 weeks saved up and I really don't want to lose it. Is it typical for a company to buy out vacation time because an employee is leaving, or would I need to do what I've done before and use it on my way out the door? Can I be doubly-employed? Should I ask my prospective boss to delay his plans so I can take vacation?

On a slightly related note, I've already expressed reservations about the accelerated timeline, citing (legitimate) concerns about existing work obligations. I like some of the people I work with, and don't want to screw them by surprising them.

The older I get, the more complex my life gets, and I don't know anyone who can advise me that doesn't have an interest in my actions... so to the hivemind I go!

Library music?

I have a friend on the Local Music Committee of the Toronto Public Library, and they're looking to hire some Toronto-area bands that have a CD and a following, but aren't so popular that the library couldn't afford them or accomodate the huge crowds they'd draw. The group's music would also have to be acceptable for a fairly general audience. However, I'm very out of the loop, current music-wise, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to pass them along to my friend on the committee.

How do I find a historian to hire full time?

Where do historians look for jobs? My law office is interested in hiring some historians but we don't have the first idea where to advertise the position. Any ideas? Our ideal candidates would each hold advanced degrees in different human right conflicts (i.e. the Rwandan genocide, or Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge), and would be willing and able to dig through essentially cold cases to document those abuses, write reports on those results, and testify in court. We don't care right now which conflict. It could be a bit more broad than a specific conflict (i.e. could be modern Rwandan or Cambodian history). The person wouldn't need to have post-graduate experience, although we'd prefer it.

We've tried pslawnet and other public interest type job postings, and have gotten some great results, but we do feel like we should have many more applications given the economy, the salary, and the job description. We're clueless. Any advice?

Creative Job-Hunts

What are some unusual ways people have employed to get employed? This Lifehacker post made me curious about other interesting and unusual strategies people have used to get hired for jobs. What else is there?

I know of:
* A guy who made a portfolio/press-kit like thing promoting himself to potential hires - he got a bunch of interviews
* People standing at street corners with resumes

anything else?

how to become an amateur hosteller ?

I need an advice on a business proposal I want to do to my mother. My mother has inherited a flour mill. It was my grandfather's business and she didn't want the building to turn into a wreck after my grandfather had given up milling. So she invested a fair amount of money to turn each level of the building in an autonomous flat (I've put some pictures here). What happens now is that my grandfather is gone and my mother has a tremendous amount of money to give to the bank each month. So she really needs to rent out each level. The mill is located in a small village, in the south of France, which hasn't many assets apart from the fact that it's a real quiet place, a rural one. The three flats had been rented for a few months, but someone moved out, and then someone moved out again. So there's only one person inside the building right now.

I would like to tell to my mother to put some furniture in one of the flats to be able to rent it per week or even for a few days to travelers and people eager to taste a little quietness.

Do you think that it's a good idea ? I would like to promote such a place on English speaking sites to attract people seeking a fFrench rural spot. Is it worth a try ? How would you manage that ?

Spanish Camera Hire

Headhunters: Worthless? Yes/No?

Headhunter filter: Do they actually help people get hired? Or are they just blood-sucking low-lives? It's finally happened - I've been let go from a law firm that's had a dwindling amount of deals come in. It was only a matter of time until I was shown the door.

In any event, I'm working to get myself back into the workforce, sending my resume every which way (feel free to toss me some suggestions =) ), but most of the people who get back to me are those cloyingly sweet people from recruitment agencies. I've gone to my fair share of recruiters in New York, and it's the same song and dance: "This is unlike anything you've done, but it's with so-and-so firm and it'd be too great of an opportunity to pass up!"

I know they're in it for the cash-money, so of course they're going to try to send you to interviews for positions that you have no interest in. But I'm curious if people have actually gotten what they wanted from a recruiting agency/headhunting company.

Please tell me I can and should expect more from these people.

Wither the weather experts?

Where can I find "legal experts?" Specifically for meteorology? The company I work for needs to hire a person or persons who are either a) paralegals with some knowledge of meteorology, or b) scientists with knowledge of the weather, preferably people who previously worked in government jobs (aka former EPA employees.)

Basically, I'm trying to find someone who can make sense of legal cases that involve weather patterns for particulate drift of various toxic substances. In the past, I have hired former FBI agents for various things; the FBI keeps a database of former agents that they will give out if you ask. I can't find such a database for the EPA or any related agency.

I've been told that I cannot hire "consultants," as they cost too much. Which is unfortunate, because consultants are easy to find. Any help is appreciated.

I am a sole proprieter in CA and hiring my wife as an employee. I am having a lot of trouble figuring out the process. I know that the CA EDD is the state agency, and the IRS is the federal agency that we use to make this happen- but neither place states very clearly what to do to tell them that I am hiring her. I found this page for the EDD, which has a pretty good run down. I sent in the registration form- but no response with an employer number so I can send in the report of hire. Obviously I need to call and ask. Anything I missed?

For the IRS, I found this page, but I've had an EIN for awhile. I can't find anything on the IRS site about how to tell them I am hiring an employee. Help?

PS: I don't want any advice on if I should change to an LLC or anything- please just help for the question if you can.

I need a U18-friendly venue to hire in London on a Saturday evening... So, venues keep telling me that they can't handle U18s under any circumstances, but this is clearly nuts - what about wedding receptions and stuff? I need somewhere (like a bar/pub kind of place) to hire exclusively for a wrap-party, for around 250 people, with a minimum spend of about £3k maximum... but I really really want a small number of U18 would-be-invitees to be able to attend. Any suggestions?

Can a non New Yorker get an NYC webdev job?

My friend seeks a job as a web developer in NYC. He's gotten the impression that no one will interview him if he's not already a resident of the Big Apple. Is this accurate? My friend is basing this assessment entirely on Craig's List ads; he hasn't looked on other sites and he hasn't done any cold calling or pounding of the pavement. The ads usually have a line such as "no out of state applicants please." Is this attitude shared by tech employers in New York City in general? If so, what's the reasoning behind this policy? (I think I can see some logic to it, but could use a more definitive answer than my own half-educated guesses). Also, if you have any advice, generally, to offer on how to get hired as a web developer in New York, please feel free to dispense.

I got the word today that soon I will be able to hire a staff person to work under me. Last time I had this opprotunity I kinda blew it. What can I do now to be ready? I work in a very very small non profit. (Total 3.5 staff). Out of all we do, my area of work is the most ripe for expansion at the moment. I've just spent a long time raising enough funds, and now finally got the nod to begin the hiring process sometime in December. I want to really nail it this time, because last time around was a bit of a flop.

My last hire was unmotivated and I think it was in part to poor management on my part. I ended up firing them as a result. I suspect the problem just like a previous thread was that I was not able to choose between being a buddy and a boss. It is very important to me that after all my hard work that I do not mess it up this time.

Something tells me I need to come up with a definite plan to run the new hire's first 30 days. What advice / resources exist to help me hire, train, supervise and manage effectively?

Oh and one caveat.. I hate corporate speak. Please don't use it. Ever.

(If it helps to know, my job is to essentially build student leadership by engaging them to create civic engagement clubs. Essentially I organize labor unions, only instead of workers they are public school students. In addition to all the other responsibillities I currently manage 3 such clubs. I expect my new staff to build and maintain 3 as well. This means tons of time on school campuses recruiting, meeting with students, and building an organization from the ground up to fight for and create real social change.)

Where does one find bands to hire for events? I'm talking about any type of band here, mariachi, swing, cover, etc. I'm looking to hire bands for my school's upcoming school year but since I'm not local to the area I'm having trouble. The school is in Trenton, NJ.

I want to be a leader, not a boss.

I start a new job tomorrow. Help me not make an ass of myself! You may remember me from this question Anyway, I've moved to a new city and landed a new job. Still a practice administrator in the world of dentistry. Still a very small practice with only one doctor. I haven't met any of the other people I'll be working with and I know almost nothing about the doctor's style. Within the year I will be completing a course of training with a large dental practice consulting firm.

I know a lot more about how to lead people, and I certainly know not to hold a garbage can in front of my assistant to get her to spit her gum out. (Yes, I did that once) I also know not to barge in and do all the work quickly and let others just sit around and watch. Still not quite sure how to delegate though.

What should I read to make me a good boss? (I'm still 24, and have absorbed Paul Homoly and Linda Miles) Bonus points if you have dental/healthcare management tips.

work work us? please?

I need to hire a web developer type person. I have installed MT 3.2 on Dreamhost and have some templates of what I want the site to look like and how I want it to behave. The templates are just Photoshop-made art really. I now need someone to build the CSS and make it "work." It's a slightly unorthodox site - two MT weblogs with different rules on a single page. And lots of modification, some of which is taken care of by plugins. So I need someone who knows MT, CSS, etc.

My friends and I can raise a little bit of money to pay someone, but we're not a company of any size, and this is a sort of community / sparetime project. Obviously we will pay someone, but can't afford much. I approached a few small companies locally but they wanted thousands of dollars, and unfortunately that's more than we can possibly afford. I know that you get what you pay for - but I'm still hoping that we can afford someone who can help us. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Advice on renting a motorcycle in Switzerland?

I will be at a conference in Lausanne, Switzerland next week. When the conference is over, I have a few days before I have to fly home. I think I'd like to rent a motorcycle and spend that time riding in the mountains. Does anyone have any recommendations for going about this? Should I try to rent the bike ahead of time, or just do it once I'm there? Can I expect to find a place that will rent bikes in Lausanne, or should I plan on going back to Geneva to get one?
