take me to your leader

What are the good independent music/arts/entertainment/hipster websites in your city? Is there a site in your large- to medium-sized city that fits these criteria:
* not affiliated with a print version (Onion, city paper, etc)
* not affiliated with a network in other cities of some kind like Gothamist or Yahoo
* not in NYC or Los Angeles for various complex reasons
* are totally awesome

and that you might turn to for most of the things listed below:

1. music and concert reviews
2. entertainment calender and preview of events
3. movie, tv, food or theater reviews
4. obnoxiously fashionable photographs of shows, dance-parties and events
5. other quirky articles about local goings-on
6. discussion of other current topics on the web or in the world of pop culture

I'm asking because I work for one like this in DC and want to find out if we're all alone or if there are sister sites out there in places like Minneapolis, etc, with which we can communicate. So if you've heard of one but never used it I'd appreciate the tip even if yr not sure of its quality. I have read this thread, but there aren't many choices in there which fit the criteria.

Thank you.

Blanket Fort Party

In approximately two weeks, I will be holding a Blanket Fort Goodbye Party on almost the entire top floor of an apartment building. Given the excellent ideas I got from this previous party thread, I thought I'd ask what you crazy kids: what would you want to see at a blanket fort party? "Blanket fort" means the same thing as "couch fort;" there's a local band named Couch Forts I'm trying to not get us confused with. We're looking to enclose as much of an area as possible with blankets, high enough for tallies to be able to stand up straight in. We're also having three DJs play in a backroom, a straightforward "here's a song, now here's another song" DJ to get things started and then two wildly popular and talented local superstars to play the height of the party.

We have the top floor of the our apartment building to work with. It was apparently a hotel back in the 1920s so imagine that we have the size of 3 large hotel rooms, connected by hallways. Two of the apartments are completely empty. I am completely unconcerned about moderate damage to walls or leaving it particularly spotless. I'm not very concerned about keeping the blankets flawless, either. The ceilings are too high to reach, and we're going to have to try to build a ceiling out of blankets.

Our apartment building has a long history (apparently going back to the 1980s) of being an underground music venue that has raves and hardcore punk and noise and experimental electronic shows in the basement. This is the first major party that's going to be held in the upper floors. A lot of people can be expected to show up; not quite as many as a hardcore show (typically 80-100 people throughout the night) but more than our previous house parties (we usually get around 20-something people to show up).

How do we hang up this many blankets and sheets? My current shopping list includes a hammer, nails, lots of rope to string between nails and keep the "ceiling" suspended, clothespins to attach fabric to rope, safety pins to attach fabric to fabric, thumbtacks to attach fabric to walls.

Where do we get them? Thrift store sheets still run $2-$3. I was wondering if it'd be cheaper to buy yards and yards of fabric from a fabric store. We're also going to borrow as many extra sheets and tapestries and etc as we can.

What different areas should we have? One apartment is devoted to the DJs and dancing; how should we set up the stage? There will probably be a projector playing on a white sheet. I'm also thinking of devoting a small bedroom to being brightly lit with a nice sheet in the background to take people's Polaroids (it's our goodbye party, I'm going to miss everyone) and having the living room as some sort of lounge area. What should we have in the lounge area? Candles to toast smores over (fire hazard? people are definitely going to be smoking, anyway), lots of pillows, what else?

Any amazing examples of huge blanket forts on the internet?

What would you want to see at a party like this?

Yes, you can come, if you live within driving distance of Columbus Ohio and I didn't weird you out at the 10th meetup.

Do I have to dress up as a mountain?

What to wear to a Twin Peaks party? (And how to bluff through the shame) So I've been invited to a Twin Peaks fancy dress party tomorrow. To my shame I'm almost entirely ignorant of this cultural landmark (something about a red room?) and despite my best intentions haven't found the time to watch any of it, and now don't have time.

So I'm looking for suggestions of what to wear. I'm a skinny white guy of average height, if that helps. I have most things you'd expect to find in a wardrobe, and a couple of spare hours to rifle through charity shops (aka thrift stores) tomorrow.

Also, while on the subject, if anyone has any suggestions for how to appear a high-class bluffer (rather than the common or garden wikipedia scarfer) than that'd be good. And I'm pretty certain that some of the other attendees are mefi readers (\waves) so I have no delusions about getting away with this.

ONE BIKE TWO BIKE RED BIKE BLUE BIKE

Bike nerds : give me a recommendation for both a long-haul touring setup and a flat-city fashion fixie setup. I've been riding long enough - and for long enough distances - where I feel comfortable actually spending money on upgrading my rides. (I'm a(n in)famous skinflint. In 2003, I know I racked up at least 5k miles, and in 2008, my guess is just under 3k. I'm finally buying a new bike.) I have two main styles of riding - commuting, and late-night bar-hopping. What sort of equipment should I be looking for? What should I be taking into account?

As far as the commute, I have dreams of one day touring cross-country, so I would want a frame capable of carrying that load. Also, I'd be looking at a sane max gear inch, and using that to choose my front crank (triple, natch) and my rear cassette. I would like the SPD/flats mix pedals for this bike, but I'm open to ideas.

As for the fashion fixie, I care most about getting a hot yellow/black look using the current tires and wheels I use (yellow Vittoria tires, black Wienmann rims and Formula hubs) and a decent geometry for short-run riding. Front brakes are necessary, rear brakes are nice, but not needed. Powergrips are the likely pedal unless if you've got better ideas. Points awarded for frames with beautiful details (lugs, seatstay ends, etc.)

Apart from all of this, I would want a bike that could do assisted solo rides well, such as the Hotter Than Hell 100. However, I'm pretty sure that most racer-oriented bike shops have this angle covered, and I really don't have money to spend on this, so I'll probably continue to use my current commuter ride ('99 Diamondback Expert that I've put a zillion miles on) for this.

So? How about it?

Whats up with the fixies?

{Hipster,Scenester}filter: What's up with all of the kids on fixed gear bikes these days? And why don't they wear helmets? I'm noticing it more and more these days...the hip/scenesters on the fixed gear bikes darting in and out of traffic, cycling en-masse through the boulevards. I'm just wondering whats up with it; I asked my pro-cycling friend who told me they've traditionally been used for training and endurance, but I doubt the kids are into that. And why aren't they wearing helmets? You would think darting and buzzing in and out of downtown street traffic helmets would be on the last, but does it damage their purported street cred?

I'm looking for a place, preferably weekly, where I can go and get my indie/hipster dance on. Straight/gay, I don't care.
Help me find the best "hipster" costume for halloween.

I'm going as a "hipster" this Halloween. This seems normal to some people on here, but I'm typical a very very preppy guy. I'm not looking for what's "in" as hipster today, but what is more stereotypical.. and sometimes my mind goes blank since none of my friends dress this way. I'm not making fun of anyone, but really just going totally against my typical style. This is what I know I need so far: -Black rimmed glasses
-Non baggy, short short sleeved shirt
-Dark hooded "sweatshirt" (not baggy or thick)
-Dark cordoroys
-converse type shoes
-colored socks

My mind goes black on:
-headwear (hat style?)
-any other accesories?

Does anyone have links to pics? Thanks so much

Sources on irony

I'm looking for writing on or examples of "irony"/hipsterism and taste/authenticity/postmodern self-consciousness, etc., or alternatively, historical writing on atomization and society. For the former, I'm pretty open to anything, though I'm particularly interested in theory or examples. Feel free to list your favorite relevant TV shows, novels, movies, Hermenaut articles, etc. To give you an example, some of the things I'm looking at right now are: Dan Clowes comics, absurdist humor (Will Ferrell, Family Guy, Sarah Silverman), Vice Magazine, the Kunkel book, Dave Eggers, Tom McCarthy's Indecision, DFW, post-avant poetry, Arrested Development, "Irony's Edge," and so on.

For the latter, I'm looking for something a little bit more empirical, like Bowling Alone (which I haven't read but heard is awful). I've bought "Culture of Narcissism," but I'm open to work that's more recent or in different subject areas, like architecture.

Hipster PDA Filter - How do you deal with phone numbers and contact info in a paper based system?

I'm interested in switching from my palm to a paper based calendar and to do list, but the one thing I can't seem to make work is my phone book. I've been using my palm for many years so, I have a good number of phone numbers built up in there that I want easy access to - and need to be able to add to.

This may sound like a stupid question (use a paper book for phone numbers!), but I'm just interested in how people do this, if they eventually enter numbers back into electronic form to back up (one of the things i like about the palm system is that the couple of times that i've lost my palm, i haven't lost the numbers), etc.

Any advice appreciated.

Hipster PDA question
A few months back I saw a website that had a applet that let you drag and drop various pages into a templet and then print out on a normal sheet of paper a set of six pages that would fold book style. I've been searching all day and can't seem to find it, any idea where this website resides?

Finding New Music Worth Listening To

How does everyone keep up with new music? Over the past year, blind luck and close reading of a few blogs turned me on to some music I'm glad I didn't miss (Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem). Work and other obligations prevent me from listening to KCRW, KEXP or some other "hip" radio stream all day, and I just don't have the time to read through x-amount of MP3 blogs a day looking for the next exciting thing. Pitchfork's 'Best New Music' feature is helpful, but I'd like something more. Ideally, I'd like a podcast of non-podsafe (i.e., whatever's new and good, signed or otherwise) music or a single blogger who posts frequently and writes well. I'm not looking for a bootlegging outlet, just a reliable source for direction on what's new and worth my time.

What cool t-shirts use American Apparel?

Where can I get more cool designs printed on t-shirts from American Apparel? I have one from spamusement.com (the Cabinet Sanchez shirt that is no longer in stock), one from Achewood, and one from the Decemberists (not the shirt shown but a green one with the same design). I love how soft and comfy the shirts are, and as a big girl, the men's XL fits me perfectly. I would be happy if I could just wear them every day. The AA store just opened in Seattle but I like shirts with stuff printed on them so I was just wondering if the cool folks here could offer some suggestions of other places on the web (or RL in Seattle) where I can get these comfy shirts that would also be cool and interesting.

Aiie! I lost the bookmark of a webshop of sorts. I remember it was very white with black lines, made in flash, sold a cd or two, a book or two, some toys and it had a jukebox with four songs in it, one of which was of Joshua Ryan. One of the cd's they sold was Joshua Ryan's "By Design", but searching for that on google doesn't lead me anywhere useful. What is this website?
