Hints you drop in conversation

What are some hints you drop in conversation? In social settings, there are certain things we don't say explicitly because they would cause awkwardness or be considered rude. We don't tell people that they've overstayed their welcome, that they're not invited to an event, that they talk too much, that they owe us a favor, that their cooking is poor, and so on. Instead, we drop hints, hoping that the other person will pick up on them.

This week a co-worker of mine completely missed a hint I dropped, and it got me to thinking: what hints have I been missing that other people have been dropping? So, I'm curious: what are some examples that you have used or encountered?

Hints on Reverse Engineering

Has anyone ever reverse engineered the UHS file format? If so, is there an open source library for reading them? Alternately, is there a modern equivalent of UHS instead? Something with, say, an iPhone GUI?

The route to better transcription

Looking for your transcription hints and tips! I've just starting transcription (ie, typing from digital files) on a freelance basis. I'm doing fairly well but I'm sure there are load of ways I could work faster and more accurately - Word shortcuts, playback software (at the moment I use ExpressScribe), optimising the time it takes me to check things.

Are there any transcribers out there willing to share their hints and tips? Anything at all would be useful.

Thanks!

If I knew then, what I know now...

Writing a finance 'book' for my niece...What do you know now about money that you wish you knew at 17? What have you learned the hard way? My niece will be starting college next year and I wanted to buy her a finance book aimed at teenagers in an effort to help her learn about money, pitfalls/scams to avoid, and generally helpful hints about credit, saving, taxes, etc. However, I have instead decided to write a personalized ‘book’ for her filled with beneficial tips, stories, and examples gleaned from various sources.
What would YOU include in a book like this? What do you know now about money that you wish you knew at 17? What have you learned the hard way? Additional topics I should be covering, such as credit cards, car payments, income taxes, credit scores, insurance, online banking, scams, and saving, as well as helpful anecdotes or tips (“Don’t sign up for a credit card on campus just to get the free frisbee…”) are welcome. Bonus points for college-specific stories.
No one taught me about money when I was growing up and I want to make sure that my niece has all the information she needs to make wise decisions.

AS2 Code Hints in Adobe Flash CS3?

Is it possible to enable AS2 syntax code hints in Flash CS3 when editing .as files? When creating a .FLA in Flash CS3 you can choose to have the file use Actionscript2 or Actionscript3. Great. When you create a .AS external class there doesn't seem to be the ability to specify if the class is being written in AS2 or AS3. The code editor seems to assume AS3 for code hints, because, for example, if you type _root. no movieclip code hints popup as they would in previous versions of Flash which commonly used _root ( i.e. _root.createEmptyMovieClip() ). Is there a way to enable AS2 syntax code hints in Flash CS3 when editing .as files?

Help me learn French. I'm doing a night class, and I'm going fairly well, but I'm sure I could be doing much better!

Hints, tips, on learning French (but pertaining to learning languages in general would be also helpful) would be much appreciated.

Merci mille fois!

Being productive in college.

Two part question.

1. I want to organize my college life. Digitally.

2. Also, I want to be productive with my scholarly pursuits, how did you/do you do it? 1. I'm looking for a program. One with maybe a calendar and a todo list for each day.

I want to be able to put all my assignments in the calendar ahead of time, and then each day look and see the assignments that I have to do.

I'm hoping this will help me to become more productive with my college endeavors.

2. Also, are there any general tips/hints/suggestions to being more successul regarding the scholastic aspects of college?

HarmonicaFilter: I was just given a harmonica as a gift, but I can't even read music, and have never played an instrument before. Instead of selling the harmonica on eBay, I would really like to learn to play the instrument. Any tips, helpful hints or resources (free is best) are much appreciated.

Questions about gameplay in Grand Theft Auto (GTA) San Andreas

In GTA San Andreas, every time I attempt a home invasion there's someone sitting in the living room. Is there a way to ensure that people will be upstairs more often?

And if I'm quicker with a baseball bat, can I prevent the majority of the population that sleeps sitting upright in the living room from calling the cops?
