How would an Indian say "Oh my gosh"?

What would a good Indian expression of suprise be? Specifically a pleasant suprise, such as the realisation that one is going to make a large amount of money, possibly from someone who is none too reputable. The Hindi (or other language) version and a literal translation would be most useful.

Recommend Hindi language learning sites?

Can you recommend any intermediate level Hindi language learning resources online? I have a basic grounding in the Hindi language, having taken 2 years of evening courses in Hindi.

I can read Devanagari script without any problems. I originally learnt Hindi using Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself Hindi" book, which is excellent. However, I stopped going to classes about a year ago so I need a way of keeping my Hindi up.

I want some intermediate level resources (preferably online) to improve and widen my Hindi. I've tried to read the BBC Hindi website, using the dictionary at shabdkosh.com to help me along, but the standard of the language is way beyond me.

I'm looking for some Hindi language learning sites that are of a lower intermediate level to get some practice and some tips. However, despite my attempts to find such sites I simply can't - I'm sure they must exist as I've found equivalent sites for less popular languages such as Tamil.

Any advice would be helpful - I can't afford (timewise or moneywise) to go to more classes at the moment.

A language in its own language

I need to prepare some labels with seven different languages printed in their own written language. This is what I have so far:
Arabic
Cantonese, should I use the simplified or the traditional (or doesn't it matter)?
Farsi
Hindi, I'm not having any luck. I think I need to install something to see the characters.
Korean, should I use Hangugeo or Chosŏnmal?
Turkish, do I write it as Türkçe?
Vietnamese, do I write it as tiếng Việt?

Contemporary music with elements of Indian styles?

I'm looking for artists, albums, or single songs that mix in elements of Indian/Hindi music and other various contemporary styles. Some songs that I enjoy like this are M.I.A.'s "Jimmy" and Pepe Delux's "Numa."
Trouble pronouncing some Hindi characters.

Devanagari / Hindi pronunciation question: help an (American) English speaker figure out some of the dental consonants. (Examples with unicode characters follow. If you’re not set up for them, I’ve put an image of this question online here). Even after reading two different text descriptions and listening to a CD guide, I’m having trouble hacking the characters त/ थ (“ta / tha”) and द/ ध (“da / dha”). My understanding of the “dental” tongue positioning would lead me to believe that त(“ta”) sounds like English th in “thing” or “think,” and द (“da”) sounds like English th in “this” or “that” (where “tha” and “dha” are just more forcefully aspirated versions of the two).

Each of these suspicions gets some support from one text but not the other, and the CD I have is rather muddled (and I’m fresh out of native Hindi speakers at the moment). So, is my understanding about either of these, or both, correct? And if not, does either of the English “th” sounds exist in Devanagari? Which letter spells it?

Have you seen this Hindi poem?

Where can I find the following Hindi poem:

"Hawa hun hawa main basanti hawa hun,
Suno baat meri anokhi hawa hun,
Jidar chahati hun udar goomthi hun,
Hawa hun hawa main basanti hawa hun." I only remember those opening lines, and it was written at least 30 years ago. I read this in my poetry class at school in India. Thanks.

Indian music video on top of train?

I'm looking for a very distinct Indian music video. There's Several years ago I got satellite TV and had the obligatory 'watch all the foreign channels' session. One channel was an Indian (I'm confident it was, but excuse my cultural stupidity in case it was Bangladeshi or Pakistani) music video channel. I watched it for a few minutes and it had no track names listed, but there was an excellent music video and I want to find it.

The music video is entirely set on a train, and appears to have been done in one take. The camera is on the top of the train and the train is going through a forest, round a mountain, and the scenery is spectacular. Dancers and, I assume, singers, are all dancing and singing on top of this train as it slowly plods through the countryside. I believe it was reasonably lively.

Any ideas? Despite the filming technique and location, it looked very crisp and high budget. I'd take a stab in the dark guess the song was quite new, so probably from around 1998-2004.

I'm insulted! (I think.)

Pardon if this is vulgar or offensive:
What do "Mada chod" and "Bey shalam" mean? How is the latter a retort to the former? I just had an odd chat while playing a board game online. I was asked for my "asl plz" and told the guy to shut up and play (not too classy on my part, I admit.) he responded with "mada shod." I googled the phrase and got a general idea that it could be like calling someone a 'jerk,' but if anyone knows what the appropriate English translation is, I would appreciate knowing.

anyway, I skimmed the google results during the game and decided to try responding with "bey shalam" just for kicks. my opponent promptly apologized and we played on.

can anyone explain that exchange to me?

Language learning tips!

I'm at a stage where I need to memorize vocabulary in a foreign language, and I am looking for advice, tips & useful software. The more recommendations, the happier I'll be, especially as regards flashcard software and that sort of thing.

I'm also interested in radio broadcasts in Spanish, French & Portuguese, and possibly slowly-spoken Hindi. And in bilingual texts in the latter.

And memorization techniques, can't forget those.

Ooof.
