Last minute things to do in Cusco. Decided to take a day off work tomorrow, and Machu Picchu is both too long a trip and too expensive for us. So, we're looking for a fulfilling alternative that won't break the bank. We want to start tomorrow morning, so any tips would be very welcome! We're open to almost anything, as long as we get outside and do some walking/hiking. Hot springs? Cheap ruins? Spectacular mountain hiking? Hidden waterfall?

Are there any great (or even good) hiking specific GPS apps for iPhone? Ideally, I'd be able to download a particular region of maps, enter and set waypoints, and show the distance and direction from my current location to a previously defined waypoint. Current speed and time to waypoint would be nice, but not necessary. The app must work without an internet connection.

One person, I want to get out of NYC for a simple, quiet vacation at Christmas/New years; but on a real tight budget. A place to hike, read, sleep, or CCski. A cabin in the woods? A beach?Bed and Breakfast out of my range right now. Something available thru Amtrak or a bus. Go south?Any ideas?

I am looking for some simple scenic hiking in Shenandoah National Park to do on a day trip starting out driving from Charlottesville, VA and returning on the same day.
I'm looking for something comfortable and not too technical but have no problems with exertion. I don't want have to clamber over rocks, ford rivers or get too dirty but I am willing to go for long uphill walks. Basically, I am fit but not outfitted for serious off trail hiking on this vacation.

I recently moved near Glacier National Park and love it. I scour our maps and the web to find interesting hikes and GNP and the surrounding areas never disappoint. Recently, a seasonal worker was hiking on his own and tragically
died. When I looked on the map to see where he was hiking and where the mountain was that he last logged a summit, there was no trail.. This got me thinking about bushwhacking and back-country hiking.

Hiking as a family (with 3 teens)-need help making it enjoyable for all. Any tips? The challenges I have had in the past are kids who want to sleep in so it is usually a hotter time of the day for hiking and I have noticed my DH likes to get way ahead of all of the rest of us and even takes different routes sometimes. It seems like the slower ones of our group have to hurry to catch up to the faster hikers. We are all in pretty good shape.
