Please recommend backpacking trips around Vancouver, doable in around four or five days by two people who are in shape and one person who isn't (me). (I.e. we are unlikely to be able to do the entire west coast trail.)

A good friend of mine has recently become very interested with all things Everest. Several nights after having a couple of beers, he has asked our group of friends if they think it was possible for someone to have summited Everest before Sir Edmond Hillary, or attempted to summit before George Mallory. One half of the group is adamant that such a feat was impossible before 1921 due to a lack of proper equipment and a cultural reverence for the mountain. The other half believe that it was certainly possible because of the length of human occupation in the region, the adaptation of the Tibetan people to higher altitudes, and the innate ambition of man. Does anyone have scientific evidence for either side of the debate or an educated opinion?

I'm planning a holiday in Scotland this August with a friend. We'd like to incorporate a few days (anything up to a week) of walking. Ideally, we'd like to go on a guided walk organised by a tour company - the kind where you stay in B&Bs/guest houses each night and the tour company organises transportation of your luggage during the day. The level of walking should be of the easy-to-moderate rather than super-challenging: the goal is to appreciate the beautiful Scottish landscape rather than undertake a strenuous physical challenge.
I've googled tour companies that offer this kind of thing, but I was wondering if any mefites have specific recommendations for UK-based tour companies offering this kind of holiday? Or any particular advice?

Later this week I'm taking my kid and her friend to the Crescent City/ Jedediah Smith National Park area. The plan is to do some hiking in the redwoods and hanging out near the beach, but I'm looking for other suggestions or recommendations for things to do in the region, assuming it's going to stay cool and rainy.

Last minute things to do in Cusco. Decided to take a day off work tomorrow, and Machu Picchu is both too long a trip and too expensive for us. So, we're looking for a fulfilling alternative that won't break the bank. We want to start tomorrow morning, so any tips would be very welcome! We're open to almost anything, as long as we get outside and do some walking/hiking. Hot springs? Cheap ruins? Spectacular mountain hiking? Hidden waterfall?

Are there any great (or even good) hiking specific GPS apps for iPhone? Ideally, I'd be able to download a particular region of maps, enter and set waypoints, and show the distance and direction from my current location to a previously defined waypoint. Current speed and time to waypoint would be nice, but not necessary. The app must work without an internet connection. [more inside]

I am looking for some simple scenic hiking in Shenandoah National Park to do on a day trip starting out driving from Charlottesville, VA and returning on the same day.
I'm looking for something comfortable and not too technical but have no problems with exertion. I don't want have to clamber over rocks, ford rivers or get too dirty but I am willing to go for long uphill walks. Basically, I am fit but not outfitted for serious off trail hiking on this vacation.

I recently moved near Glacier National Park and love it. I scour our maps and the web to find interesting hikes and GNP and the surrounding areas never disappoint. Recently, a seasonal worker was hiking on his own and tragically died
. When I looked on the map to see where he was hiking and where the mountain was that he last logged a summit, there was no trail.. This got me thinking about bushwhacking and back-country hiking. [more inside]
