Where in New England should we go camping? We have a pop-up camper and are looking for decent hiking trails and maybe some area attractions. An alpine slide would be a big plus! I have a few Vermont ideas, (Killington, Gifford Woods, Bromley Mountain) and would like some feedback or new ideas. [more inside]

I am trying to buy a LED headlamp on ebay...they range in brightness from 8 to 30+ and the one I want is 8. Is that goint to be bright enough for pitching a tent in the dark? I tried to look up LED levels on the inter-web but all I found was scientific mumbo jumbo, can someone just tell me which one to buy please!? Thanks

Anybody know a good camping / backpacking spot in California that's not snowed under yet and is a decent drive from San Francisco (< 8 hours, not involving snow chains)? [more inside]

I shall walk into the wild maybe for a week or so, depending on the weather, blisters, etc.
Who has recommendations for (relatively safe) *long* solitary walks in the U.S. or Canada?
Specifically, I'm looking for a hike/trail/path that I can follow -- walking 7-10 hours a day, for 5-7 days in a row. No cell phone, no computer, no schedule.
This would be a sort of annual retreat/walk/vacation/time-to-reset-my-body, that I'd like to do every year. Time to think, lose a few pounds, kick-up my metabolism, detox, chill out, regroup, spiritually recharge, etc.
Assuming I don't want to carry a gun into the wild (to protect against critters or humans), where are some interesting, safe destinations???
I'm not a survivalist and I'm not looking for an adventure per se. Prefer a minimum of life-threatening hazards and/or 100+ degree temperatures or freezing nights.

Last year I bought all of the gear my wife and I need to start spending more of our free time in the woods, hiking and camping. The issue is she is a city girl (well, Long Island) and has never been camping and is deathly afraid that bears (or other wild animals) will get us. [more inside]

My wife and I will be spending two days in Yellowstone, and we're looking for input on what we must see/do while we're there. Good day-hikes, great vistas, "secret" places, etc. are what we're looking for. Also, while we'll be camping, any suggestions for fun local restaurants or museums would be great. [more inside]

This summer, some friends and I plan on going camping and we're looking for some good overnight camping spots and hope some you might know a place or two that rock. Waterfalls to visit & swim in and drinking copious amounts of alcohol at night not being a problem is a plus and am willing to drive a few hours.

HikingCampingNaturalBeautyFilter: I'm new to NYC. I'd love to escape the city and do a bit of hiking or camping in the great fall weather we're having. I'm looking for stuff that is a) beautiful and b) accessible by train. I have "sometimes" access to a car for weekends, though, so just spill your favorite camping or hiking area, even if it requires a car. Hitchhiking into and outa town is also ok by me. [MI]
