Is there a decent hiking GPS app for the iPhone?

My dad and I are now in the planning/training phase of the Presidential Traverse that I asked about earlier this month. I'm hoping to bring my iPhone plus a recharging pack and make that my total electronics solution. However, the one hiking GPS app I've tried is unsatisfactory and the others cost more than I'm willing to spend just to try them out. Review and comparison sites are not helpful. Is a GPS receiver for me?

My partner and I are amateur hikers, with me being a relative newbie. I'm interested in buying a GPS receiver but I'm not sure how they work and whether they'd be useful for us. We live in New York state and we like hikes of about 4 - 7 miles of moderate woodlands terrain. We've purchased some good trail maps (showing marked/blazed trails, woods roads, and unmaintained trails) with topographical features (and uses UTM coordinates, if that's relevant) and a basic magnetic compass (which we're learning more about using as we go). Help me find a handheld GPS that feels like it's from this century.

I want a GPS for geocaching and hiking in areas with no cell phone coverage. The ones I've seen so far look about as up-to-date as my Handspring Visor. Please advise. [more inside]

Best iPhone GPS app for a hiker?

Are there any great (or even good) hiking specific GPS apps for iPhone? Ideally, I'd be able to download a particular region of maps, enter and set waypoints, and show the distance and direction from my current location to a previously defined waypoint. Current speed and time to waypoint would be nice, but not necessary. The app must work without an internet connection. [more inside]

Which (Canadian, hiking) GPS? Criteria inside

Hi there, I'm looking for advice on the right GPS unit. This would be my first purchase but I have used a few in the past and I know what didn't work for me and what did. I've read a bit but to be honest I still don't have a clue about manufacturers, specific models, chipsets and everything else. I was wondering if y'all could help? [more inside]
