many programs and devices have a function that slows down or speeds up audio without changing the pitch. my rockheaded layman's theory on illustrating how this must be done is that it divides the whole audio track into something like audio pixels that are so short that they can be shortened without actually removing any of the details that you're hearing-- it's just you're hearing every small detail for less of an amount of time (likewise with slower speed, it lengthens the amount of time that you hear every of those little "audio pixels" so that it is twice as slow). My new apartment in New York City came equipped with a built-in ethernet internet connection. So far, I've maxed out at just over 1 meg a second, though that's only happened a few times. Besides downloading media via bittorrent and p2p, what recreational net activities should I take advantage of? What's the best way that I can 'speed test' my top d/l speed? Also, any guesses on what type of connection I likely have? T1? T3? How would I find this out without bothering my landlord? [more inside]

[RapidFireLyricsFilter] I love songs that are catchy, clever, witty, and possibly educational. But I love them even more if their lyrics clip along at such an alacritous speed that it takes many listenings and hours of practice to sing along, if indeed it's even possible. Any recommendations for great, high-SPM (syllables-per-minute) songs?

What is the very cheapest way to get high-speed internet in the Sunset district of SF? In our place in Montreal we pay 40/month Canadian, and I know there are cheaper plans. Everything I could find in SF is at least 45 USD/month and generally more, unless you have a cable connection. My sis just moved there, has a very low budget and no cable connection. Thoughts?

This has been asked before but the answers I need are a bit more specific. I bought my home (1920s bungalow) here in Sacramento 3 years ago, and the previous owners had DSL - in fact the DSL port in the house is exactly where I need/want my broadband connection to be. So - I just got an Airport Express card for my powerbook and a Airport Extreme basestation: do I want DSL or cablemodem? I use satellite for TV, not cable, and am not going to switch any time soon, so bundles are out. I am not going to run a website and need no static IP. Insanely high speed is not necessary, just something a hell of a lot faster than my current 56k. Prices? Service? Will SBC give me a deal on DSL since the install is already in place?
