What is the optimal speaker set up for a computer playing iTunes and Spotify primarily (quality ~320 kbps)? I primarily listen to music on Spotify, and am looking for a new office speaker setup to connect to my iMac, but I'm not sure what the optimal plan is. Bookshelf speakers? Sonos? Computer speakers? DAC? Receiver? I'd prefer speakers to headphones, and am looking for the best sound out of those files.
I have a Marantz PM4001 amplifier and pair of bookshelf speakers that I've not used for months, as my new media center setup does not have analog outputs. Should I buy a digital-to-analog converter (which needs its own power supply), or should I just simplify my whole setup? (E.g. just rely on the TV's built-in speakers.) I have kind of got out of the habit of listening to music and am not sure I need this anymore. [more inside]
I can't seem to eliminate this hum/buzz in the phono stage of my stereo receiver. [more inside]
is it worth repairing/restoring my old NAD receiver, or should I just look for something else? [more inside]
Recently I found a good deal on a direct drive DJ turntable which was manufactured for the japanese market. I know japanese consumer electronics run on 100V while US runs on 120V. I have heard conflicting things on whether this would be an issue. It seems like the turntable would likely run but I have heard some reports that this difference in voltage might eventually damage it. Is a power adaptor a permanent solution to this problem? Is a power adaptor even necessary?
I have a small apartment. I would like a speaker setup for listening to music. It's an Apple apartment, so I figure the path of least resistance is to get an Airport Express and then connect speakers somehow. Can anyone recommend either (1) a specific set of powered speakers that reproduce music accurately, or (2) a separate amp to put between an input like the Express and a pair of bookshelfs like the Pioneer SP-BS22-LRs. In past questions (1, 2), I've described my stereo setup and my desire to build a stereo tube amp. I have no worries about actually building the kit amp, but I'm not sure what I'd do with all my speakers. In thinking about this, I realized I don't know much about my stereo in the first place. Can you help me understand what it actually means to have a stereo amp? [more inside]
I bought a turntable and the sound is a disaster. I think I should just buy a new stylus but is there anything else obvious I might try first? [more inside]

Recently I received an old hifi (stereo receiver with aux and phono inputs) and two EPI speakers from a family member. The system is quite old, but headphones sound great, as does one of the two speakers. The other sounds blown. What are my options in New York City? [more inside]

Looking for a small "bookshelf" style hi fi unit. I have recently moved to the US from Australia and had to leave my great little hi fi behind. I am currently playing my CD's through a borrowed portable unit that sounds like a tin can and have been hunting for something better. [more inside]

Our apartment is 11 years old. Apparently that's not quite new enough for it to have been wired for sound when it was built, so I have to do it myself. Hardwood floors, but it's a wooden building so presumably the walls and ceiling are fair game. Can I run wires without tearing off molding or cutting holes in the ceiling? How? Can I do it myself, or is it the kind of thing that requires a professional? How do they do this stuff?

I'm curious about all the hype surrounding the Sonic Impact Class T integrated amp, and would like to use this curiosity as an excuse to finally set-up a small bedroom stereo system. The TNT Audio review (linked above) suggests >90 dB speakers - any suggestions on speakers to pair with this amp? I want to keep the price down, but I'm willing to pay enough so I can enjoy the sound. [more inside]
