Are there any real-life historical examples of the Small Town With A Terrible Secret horror trope? Towns where long-term, ongoing crimes (or unsavory religious practices one supposes) where purposefully covered up and kept hidden from the outside world and any attempt to investigate them resulted in the investigator being detained, thrown out, or killed?

I loved the "show me the hidden side of L.A." question. But I'm gonna be visiting its mild-mannered southern cousin, San Diego. Show me the hidden side of THAT!

My wife thought
Last of the Mohicans had a scene where the heroine was buried alive to protect her from an Indian raid, with only a reed to breathe through. I just watched the movie, and didn't see anything like that. Is she thinking of another movie, or a (very) different cut of the film?

I discovered
Crystal deodorant a few months ago. I had tried literally every other unscented deodorant on the market and could not find one that held up all day. It turns out that the damned rock you rub on your pits is the greatest deodorant ever, and it had been on the shelf the whole time.
What other miracle products are sitting on the shelves at the market, unnoticed as I pass them by in favor of products that are more well known or have bigger advertising budgets?

I like secret compartments! My car has one. I just found a vintage handbag with a hidden umbrella compartment. What are some more things - besides the obvious hide-a-key rocks and hollow books - that have unique secret compartments? Please list/link to specific examples!

With a digital photo frame is it possible to specify the order photos are displayed? I'd like to have a random set, interspersed with occasional strings of ordered photos.

Should I stay in this relationship? Over the course of the past year and a half, I have repeatedly (approximately 5-6 times) discovered that the person I hope to spend my life with has kept information from me. I just don't know that it will ever get better, and am so much in need of an objective set of eyes, please.

The world is boring. It needs more buried treasure. What things could I bury as treasure - things with great and lasting value, yet could be obtained cheaply? (Eg, a spirits/wine chest could be inexpensive to buy, but eventually become a treasure worth finding after enough years have passed. Superstar backstage passes are useless as treasure (they expire), but are an example of something of great value that doesn't cost much money to obtain - if you can find a way to obtain them.)
How can I assemble epic genuine treasure on a budget?

I'm struggling to remember the title of a book I read in the 1980s, which had a real-world twist: hidden within the narrative was the location of a spot in the USA where some sort of treasure or reward money was located.

I'm going with my family down to Italy from around Oct 18-30th, including a week at a farm house in Ancona (looking forward to that, for sure!). We'll also be in Venice for around three whole days in the beginning and end of the trip (we fly in/out from Venice).

I'm trying to archive, in PDF form, a series of Web pages where the content won't expand unless I click "more" dozens and dozens of times to reveal each hidden item. Is there some time-saving Firefox add on--or other tool--that could do this for me automatically? It's a Javascript thing...
