My Windows 7 computer no longer turns off properly. If I shut the screen, it no longer sleeps or hibernates, it just freezes. If I go through the start menu to hibernate, it will do so, but the computer is still on -- the power and the wifi lights stay on, it's still running and using battery. This also happens if I go through the start menu to turn off the computer. If I hold on the power key, it will then turn off and restart or resume from hibernation normally when I turn it back on.

After the OSX 10.8.2 update several days ago, my laptop freezes on wake from hibernate (at least, it only does it when it has been asleep for a while). I posted on the Apple support forums
here, but no one has responded. There are excerpts from my system log there.
Things I've tried: fixing permissions, SMC reset, turning off my gmail calendar updates (I saw a lot of errors in the log having to do with that) but no luck. Any ideas?

I have, to aid in not permitting myself to stay up too late, set Windows 7's Task Scheduler to automatically hibernate at a certain time in the evening that varies according to weekday. However, if I manually hibernate the system beforehand (
i.e., go to sleep earlier than the deadline), when I wake it the next morning, it hibernates shortly thereafter. However, importantly, I do
not have the "Run task as soon as a scheduled start is missed" checkbox turned on. I've seen
this, but Richard's suggestion of only letting the task run after a certain idle period – I don't think it'd be suitable as I don't want activity (either mine or the computer's) to be able to push things past the deadline. Any ideas as to what I can do?

My Ubuntu laptop is unresponsive within the first 20 seconds after resume from suspend. I think the culprit is Flash (npviewer.bin), since it is shown as using 80%+ of CPU. How can I work around this?

How do I make my laptop "hibernate" and "sleep" while using Backtrack 2 Final? In other words, what is the command or where would I go to hibernate or put it to sleep?

How can I discover how to keep my laptop's hard drive powered down? Hibernating or standby states are unreliable or very slow to wake up from.
