Guitar Hero 3 (Wii) filter: Can't defend Lou's whammy attack! Can't believe I need to post this, but Lou is killing me on Easy level. Moving the whammy bar doesn't seem to do anything at all to defend the whammy attack and the meter just drains down no matter what I do - am I missing something?

Rock Band vs Guitar Hero

Rock Band or Guitar Hero for Xbox 360? Possibly mitigating factors inside. -- Household until now has played Guitar Hero titles on a PS2.
-- No one is wildly talented, so easier gameplay a bonus.
-- Kid friendly settings (e.g., true co-op) a BIG bonus.
-- Musical tastes range from 80s to stereotypically indie to metal. Yes, we are aware of the upcoming Guitar Hero release and yes, we have Xbox LIVE.
-- Any other factor(s) we should consider are worth mentioning.

I was surprised that this question has not been asked previously as far as I could see, so feel free to mention anything that might help someone dealing with the basic decision. Thanks!

Bill Joy is awesome, and I want to meet him.

Can I meet Bill Joy? I live in Denver, and ski in the Aspen area from time to time. Bill Joy lives there, and I dream of a day when I could have lunch with him and talk about technology, business ventures, and the future. His piece 'Why the future doesn't need us' really struck me when I read it back in 2000 as a sophomore in college. Further, we have similar interests, as we've both read Kruzweil and Drexler (and perhaps others), so I think we might have some good things to discuss. And although I consider myself to be a mere mortal relative to Mr Joy in the programming world, we would also have a common basis for conversation in that realm as well. So, even thought this is a long shot, maybe someone here knows someone who knows someone? Please pass it on that I'd be happy to buy lunch anywhere between Denver and Aspen for the great chance to chat with Mr Joy. Thanks!

Help me parse my Rock Band options!

Thinking about taking the Rock Band plunge, but there's so much to think about! Help me decide what to buy and when! So after perusing the various track lists and DLC for Rock Band, it seems like it's finally time to buy, but what version to buy?

It's for Playstation 3. I've mentioned to my boyfriend that RB2 would be an excellent Xmas gift for me, but he tends to way underestimate the popularity of videogames, so if I rely on him to pick up the RB2 bundle it probably won't happen. Also might be a bit too expensive and greedy for a present.

I'd pick up the original bundle now, but I understand it has a wired guitar, which is kind of a downer. I don't care so much about wireless drums, and I've heard the RB2 drums (at least for Xbox 360) kind of suck.

So the way I see it I have a few options:

1) Buy the current bundle and deal with wired guitar
2) Buy the current game and wireless guitar now, then maybe my boy can get me the drums and RB2 disc for the holidays.
3) Wait and just buy RB2 bundle.

If I buy the parts separately, it seems I'm missing out on the microphone. Do they sell it separately, or what other mics work?

Another question (sorry, try to think of this as a massive RB infodump). - Will the original Rock Band controllers work with Guitar Hero IV when it releases, or just the RB2 ones?

I would ask if GH4 would be a better buy, but looking at the tracklists and RB's record of excellent DLC, it seems like Rock Band is the choice for me.

I need to become a Guitar Hero master in 3 months... HELP!

A co-worker and I are having an ultimate Guitar Hero Battle to the death in 3 months time. I need some tips/techniques so I can kick his ass! After only playing 4 times I am ripping it up (getting ~95% on most songs) on medium, so I fully expect to reach expert level by the end of November (when the battle is). He currently has the advantage as he is already at expert level, but he has more demands on his time than I do so I will have much more time to play, practice and master it than he will before the battle. Also, I have 12+ years of piano training (among other instruments), and am an excellent touch typer, so I have fast accurate fingers, where he has said himself that isn't necessarily his forté.

I just need some tips on how to get really good at it quickly. Anyone know of some great tutorials/lessons/etc online? What songs should I focus on? What are some techniques for playing I wouldn't have thought of? Any tips on how to master the hammer-ons and roll-offs?

Help me beat him because the loser has to buy the other the Aerosmith version of the game, plus have a humiliating sign on their office door for a week explaining how they suck at Guitar Hero.

ps - We are going to be playing Guitar Hero 3, and I have the Wii version. Also, the battle will be that we each choose 5 songs some the set list that we will both play. Whoever gets the most points for the song gets to count it as a win. First person to get 6 wins... well, wins. :)

I need help planning a Wii Sports and Guitar Hero competition. I volunteered to organize the whole thing, and now am a little overwhelmed. This will be an on-site work competition for charity. The idea is that there are two competitions: one for Guitar Hero (Rock Stars) and one for Wii Sports (Jock Stars). Ideally we'd have two brackets each, one for amateurs and one for pros. There are approx. 700 employees, and getting 50 of them to sign-up would be a success.

Has anyone organized one of these before? Any tips/tricks/things to avoid? How do I entice people who've never played before? How many TVs/Wiis shoud I have? How should I set up the brackets? What should the prizes be? Help!

GH3 guitar for PS2 doesn't work with earlier versions?

GH3 guitar doesn't play well with others. My lovely family just bought me Guitar Hero '80s for my birthday (PS2), but it seems that our GH3 guitar isn't compatible. The buttons work for navigation but not to play notes. A frustrating scan of the various GH forums seems to confirm that incompatibility, but only in one place, buried way down deep. It just seems weird to me that they wouldn't have made it backwards compatible - otherwise what are people supposed to do who are late to the game? The folks at Best Buy hadn't heard anything about it. Any hacks or suggestions?

When playing Guitar Hero, my eyes do wonky things. When playing Guitar Gyro (or watching someone play) on a large screen TV, my eyes become wonky after focusing somewhere other than the screen. It appears as if other objects are "growing" or "breathing" after I draw my attention away from the television.

Does anyone else experience this? What is this optical illusion? I feel like I'm on heavy psychedelic drugs.

"Most Likely to be a Super Villain" photo - ideas for a clever costume?

My senior class voted me 'most likely to be a super villain' for the superlative section of the yearbook. I need to throw something together to wear in the picture, and I was hoping someone could help me. People are expecting me to come up with something really good, and everything I can think of is a little mediocre.

Can you guys think of anything funny/ cool for a high school girl dressing up as a super villain?

Thanks!

Received Guitar Hero III for xmas and wanted an extra controller. I've noticed they don't sell individual controllers marketed for the PS3 but there are separate guitars marketed for PS2. Has anyone tried any of these? Do they actually work for PS3?

I've been reading some reviews and some people comment that when a second controller is added the buttons work but it doesn't generate sound.

Hero/Villain or Hero/Sidekick costume pairings?

HalloweenFilter: This year's party is "Heroes and Villains"-themed, and my fiance and I would like to be either a hero/sidekick pair or a classic hero/villain pair. I just read the lot of Halloween costume posts here in the green, and got a few ideas to play with, but I'm still on the hunt. My fiance is a busy girl and won't want to wear anything structurally elaborate or hard to assemble, but I'd totally go all Rob Cockerham on my costume if the idea called for it.

I've come to AskMe for a broad range of thoughts, so don't hold yourself back, but my hope for the costumes is that the pairing will be:

1) Not super-obvious ("Spidey & Doc Ock")
2) Smart enough to be geeky-cool, but nothing that will exceed the mental capacity of tipsy 20-somethings.
3) Ironic/Playful with the concept (The Listerine Guy and toothpaste from the TV ads, for instance).

We're both extensively geeky, with interests in history, lit, pop culture, video games and the whole super-hero scene, so any idea is fair game at this point. One or both of us can cross-dress for the right idea, but we're not eager to.

Thanks in advance!

Please help me find movies that end with the main character dying.

Please help me find movies that end with the main character dying. WARNING: Question and answers may contain spoilers, in case it's not obvious. My fiancee and I watched a movie tonight that is about the main character dying, but in the end he's unexpectedly saved. That got us trying to come up with movies that ended with the main character dying. As a rule of thumb, the ones that jumped to mind quickly were documentary, historical, war, and period pieces. Can you think of movies outside of these genres that end with the main character dying? Characters should also not come back to life in a sequel. Lastly, being undead does not count as being alive for the sake of this question. (Sorry Astro Zombie.)

Movies that work:

The Butterfly Effect (1 & 2)

Pi

Ghost Dog

Ladder 49

Philadelphia

The Wicker Man

Movies that don't work:

Romeo and Juliet (period piece)

Boys Don't Cry (based on true events)

Sixth Sense (character does not die at the end)

Run Lola Run (character dies in two sequences, lives in the final)

28 Days Later (only dies in alternate endings)

The Crow (undead is not Newspeak for alive)

TIME TO ROCK OUT!

I'm having a party on Nov 11th to celebrate the release of Guitar Hero 2 and to rock out to new songs with my friends. I was thinking it might be cool to hang up some fake flyers for my in-game band (Della Rhesus Monkey) around my place for flavor. I have no idea how to go about it, though. I have access to Photoshop, but have very little skill in it. How best to capture that "crappy local band flyer" feeling? Any other suggestions on how to add some nice flavor to the party? (I already have a wig and leather wristbands.)

What do I need next to my batarang?

I'm becoming a costumed crimefighter -- what should I have on my utility belt? As should be obvious, I have no actual superhuman powers, but I'd like my personal utility arsenal to have a variety of items that will be useful in the detection, pursuit, and apprehension of criminals. This is not crimelab type stuff, but items I can carry on my person either in a small pack, affixed to a belt, etc.

Cost is an issue (because I'm not Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark) so nothing too extravagant. Bulk is also an issue, but if something is essential, then I'll find a way to carry it.

Some items that are already planned: flashlight, pepper spray, small digital camera, some kind of multi-tool, and disposable plastic restraints.

I AM NOT INTERESTED in issues of legal sanction or the ramifications of vigilante justice. However, feel free to send any other general tips about heroing to the e-mail address in my profile.

Good Historical Action Hero Movies?

Normally, I'm not a big fan of historical or period films, but lately I've been enjoying a few. Recently, I watched Braveheart and Gladiator, and now I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions. I do enjoy epics, and I don't mind older films, so any ideas would be welcome. What historical hero movies do you recommend?
