I'm struggling in a few areas of my life (mostly related to doing the bulk of the parenting for two little kids, with a spouse who works long hours and travels frequently) and having a bit of trouble staying focused at work. I was looking into our employee assistance program, which is run through HRI, and they offer "short-term counseling" and online/telephone life coaching. I would like to hear the experiences of anyone who has used this type of service; I have never used any flavor of mental health care. [more inside]
With the encouragement of my significant other, what started as an article on foreign policy and international relations for a non-profit research centre is now being expanded into a book. I would like some advice on writing a book. [more inside]

I'm struggling today with both. The ADHD makes searching for help a little more difficult than normal. Can you give me (really short) one liner suggestions for making it through? Mostly focusing on being productive, and coping strategies, but also maybe ways to be kind to oneself. [more inside]
I've been tasked with developing a set of standard IT Infrastructure Project Milestones and I'm kind of at a loss on coming up with a standard. Basically we have weekly status slides (PPTs) that we fill out for EVERY project that's in flight at our company. I'm the PM for Infrastructure. I was using something pretty generic like: 1. Project Kick-Off 2. Requirements Review/Sign Off 3. Design 4. Development or Set Up/Configuration 5. Test Unit & UAT (Regression & System If Applicable) 6. Deploy (Pilot * Deploy Where Applicable) 7. Warranty All you IT gurus out there (and PMs!) can you help me develop something better that can be used as a standard?
I have outdoor space for the first time in my life at my new house. But as a lifelong apartment dweller and city boy, I have virtually no horticultural knowledge. Can you recommend resources to help orient me in my little yard? I'm pretty much at square one. [more inside]

This is my first ever question on metafilter, and it probably sounds absurd. I recently got a relatively-high-paying job away from home, and I'm only 23. Maybe it's because I'm lonely, but only time I feel good about myself or feel like I'm worth anything is when I help others. [more inside]
I know exactly what I want out of work, and it is this: working on creative projects to make something useful (and also cool) as part of a team. And also money. Not tons, but enough to get by. I have a BA, but nearly all my work experience to date has been in low/no-skill labor. How do I bootstrap myself into a new career and what should I even be looking at? [more inside]
One of my co-workers has lost both parents within 3 months of each other. We are not super super close, and so far she hasn't accepted my offers of specific, practical things I can do to help (watching her kids, going to grocery store. etc.). I'd like to make her life a little easier anyway, so I was thinking about some kind of meal delivery service so she wouldn't need to cook for a little bit. [more inside]
I need to go to the Philadelphia Passport Agency on Friday morning. The state dept website assures me there are several pay parking lots in the vicinity. But I'd prefer more concrete directions, as I'm driving in from 3 hrs away for an 8am appointment. Can anyone give me recommendations and addresses of lots or garages that are very likely to be open that are nearby? Where I can park all day? The address is 200 Chestnut St. [more inside]
In my last question I laid out a basic primer to understanding the clusterfuck that is my life right now and you were very helpful. I took some of your advice and hired a cleaning lady to clean my kitchen. But I realize now that the kind of help I need for getting the rest of the house in order is kind of extreme and I need help thinking it through and making a plan. [more inside]

I am a manager and have an employee in my department who is also a friend. She's been having trouble with marriage for some time now and she's confided that it will be ending. Yesterday, she came in an asked to talk privately outside. She was a mess, saying she had been sexually assaulted by her husband the night before. I comforted at best as I could, offering several options for help on a professional. But at this point, I'm not sure of the best way to proceed, privately or professionally. [more inside]

Here's my situation: I graduated with a bachelor's in biology, and have had a series of jobs I liked, involving wildlife rehabilitation and working at a zoo... but I've moved and these jobs are hard to come by in my current location, AND, none of these jobs make any money. So what career field can I transition into that could help me take advantage of the fact that I already have a bachelor's degree? [more inside]

I've been bombing in interviews for IT Help Desk, or Desktop Support positions, and whenever I've called back the interviewer, the most common answer they give is "poor communication skills". Is there any entry point into the field that wouldn't rely so much on working with people? Would it make more sense to work as QA tester, and then try to transition to something in systems or database administration?
I'm trying to rent an apartment on Craigslist. The issue is that after my post has been successfully put up, it only appears when searching criteria fit the details of my post. What I mean: It's a 3 bedroom, so if someone searches in my area for 3BR, the ad will appear. However, if someone just goes into the general "all apartments" section the ad does not appear. What gives? Looking through the application section again, I don't see how I could have done things differently. Am I missing a radio button to do this? Should I classify it as 0-3 BR in the ad setup? Does CL charge for different add access?
I had a return to Amazon. I printed the label they provided and put it on the envelope. I didn't realize it was a UPS label and not USPS until last night when I went to check the status of my return. My best friend has been seeing someone for about 7-8 months now. Initially, he seemed very nice and friendly. However, as the months have gone by he's turned out to not be right for her. To make things worse, she's being emotionally abused by him on a rather subtle level, to the point where several times she's been crying while talking to me about him. A couple of weeks ago almost broke up with him after talking with me about recent problem, where I got fed up with the crap she was dealing with and told her she should end it. Since I know she tends to listen to me and to trust my thoughts, should I make a bigger effort to convince her to leave this guy? [more inside]

I switched over to iCloud a number of months ago. I currently have rules set up in Apple Mail to filter incoming mail into folders. I want these emails but I don't want them in my inbox. The problem is it doesn't work as I anticipated. It would appear if Apple Mail isn't open, the rules won't apply themselves on my iPhone. And even if Apple Mail is open, the rule doesn't apply itself immediately, and my iPhone is pinged, I check my email, and then the email "disappears" into the folder. This is getting really f*cking annoying. [more inside]
I'm looking to change careers and my goal is to be doing "that what is most effective towards helping the world". I asked in a previous question "What is the cause with the most leverage" and since then effective altruism seemed to be the best solution for making a difference on the biggest scale. But if I wanted to help that cause it seems like there's no better way to do it than to make a ton of money. Other than earn a ton of money, I suppose I could try to work for an organization like LifeYouCanSave. But would I be necessarily of greatest help doing that i.e suppose they have all the help they need other than people to donate. I'm not looking for importance or anything. If somehow standing on a corner counting how many red cars go by is the best thing I can be doing for the world, then so be it. I just want to know that I'm being useful.
So, I just finished building a new computer and have installed windows, all the driver CDs, etc. Then I went to connect it to the internet so I could install some anti-virus software, download the rest of the drivers, etc and no dice. I feel bad having to ask for help, since I'm a computer geek, but well, it is ethernet straight into a modem; normally I just plug it in and it works. [more inside]

I'm a few hours from the end of a very successful Kickstarter campaign, and as a result I'm suddenly in charge of a company with nearly 2000 customers and a lot of work to accomplish. I need to hire some help, but not having done this before, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for or how to find it. Basically, I want to use some of my project funding to make it so that I can focus all of my efforts on project goals that only I can accomplish. I think that means hiring a secretary and/or a personal assistant, and someone who I can trust to answer my emails, tell me when I actually need to deal with something personally, and potentially even have access to my credit cards for buying groceries, outsourcing project-related tasks, etc. What's involved in finding someone who does good work and is trustworthy? (I'm in Los Angeles, though I can imagine having someone do much of the secretarial work remotely)
Hi Mefi Community, I would like to apply for an MFT grad program but feel a huge block when it comes to the personal statement, as well as the letter of reference(s). I have one day left to online shop for my brother's Christmas pressie and I'm drawing a blank. I've already gotten him a couple of things, but I need one more item to make it a worthwhile parcel. He is 33, a drummer, and wears casual, laid back clothes, but no "funny" tees etc. Is there a t-shirt/ book/ small piece of drumming gadgetry/ anybloodything that would suit him? Will have to be available in an online UK store for it to be delivered in time, and my budget is about £20-25. He will be travelling back to London from Belfast after Christmas so it needs to fit in carry-on luggage. Thanks!
