How do I get colleges and universities to respond?

I am a doctoral student that needs to deploy a short survey as my research data collection instrument for my dissertation. I have passed a rigorous IRB process at my University. I am having an incredibly hard time getting college and universities to respond to my email request for permission to deploy my survey to their school student email systems. [more inside]

What to do about my references and lack of response to possible employer

I had a job interview last week on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 and it went well. I was told that I would hear from them, even if I didn't get the job, to at least thank me for applying. So I find out on Friday , October 24, 2014 that the supervisor from this job called two of my references, but neither of them answered the phone. I was told by both of my references that they are "very busy" and would try to call back later. [more inside]

How do we get on top/stay on top of being clean and organized?

OK...really I want to be somewhat clean and somewhat organized. Can anyone point to a method of organizing and cleaning a household in addition to a methodical way of purging things? My goal is to get to a point of being able to maintain a certain level of organization/cleanliness. It is to the point where I am embarrassed to have anyone over. [more inside]

Can't find a job where I don't feel like ripping my hair out?

I recently left a job where I was verbally abused by my bosses; very intimidating people who lacked the ability to approach people about issues in the office in a professional way. I was offered a job by a former coworker in retail but it is proving to be even more disastrous. I'm not sure what to do about it all? [more inside]

I want to beat my athletic buddy in our next 5k. How?!

Amateur runner here. I have a friend that I ran a 5k with recently. Even though I train waaaaay more than he does, he whooped me by quite a bit. What's the best way for a designer/artist to raise money for charity?

To be honest, I don't want to do any family/friends crowd-funding. I'm more interested in offering a design/art service--like "your name written in calligraphy" or "an ink drawing of your face"-- for a price that will be donated to charity. But how does one go about such a campaign and what are the best venues for such an endeavor? [more inside]

Help with asking my father for financial support

My dad will be making his last child support payment to my mother next month for my brother who is 19 and no longer in full time education (he’s going to university). After then he will no longer financially support my brother - he hasn't financially supported me since I was 18 when he made his last support payment. I am now thinking of asking him directly to make a monthly payment to me and my brother since he isn’t supporting us in any other way. [more inside]

Life coach through employer: Good idea?

I'm struggling in a few areas of my life (mostly related to doing the bulk of the parenting for two little kids, with a spouse who works long hours and travels frequently) and having a bit of trouble staying focused at work. I was looking into our employee assistance program, which is run through HRI, and they offer "short-term counseling" and online/telephone life coaching. What is a good standard set of IT Infrastructure Project Milestones?

I've been tasked with developing a set of standard IT Infrastructure Project Milestones and I'm kind of at a loss on coming up with a standard. Basically we have weekly status slides (PPTs) that we fill out for EVERY project that's in flight at our company. I'm the PM for Infrastructure. I was using something pretty generic like: 1. Project Kick-Off 2. Requirements Review/Sign Off 3. Design 4. Development or Set Up/Configuration 5. Test Unit & UAT (Regression & System If Applicable) 6. Deploy (Pilot * Deploy Where Applicable) 7. Warranty All you IT gurus out there (and PMs!) can you help me develop something better that can be used as a standard?

IT positions that don't rely on working with people

I've been bombing in interviews for IT Help Desk, or Desktop Support positions, and whenever I've called back the interviewer, the most common answer they give is "poor communication skills". CL posting help - apartment post only shows up under specific searches

I'm trying to rent an apartment on Craigslist. The issue is that after my post has been successfully put up, it only appears when searching criteria fit the details of my post. What I mean: It's a 3 bedroom, so if someone searches in my area for 3BR, the ad will appear. However, if someone just goes into the general "all apartments" section the ad does not appear. What gives? Looking through the application section again, I don't see how I could have done things differently. Am I missing a radio button to do this? Should I classify it as 0-3 BR in the ad setup? Does CL charge for different add access?

How can I help a friend in an abusive relationship that she almost left?

To make things worse, she's being emotionally abused by him on a rather subtle level, to the point where several times she's been crying while talking to me about him. A couple of weeks ago almost broke up with him after talking with me about recent problem, where I got fed up with the crap she was dealing with and told her she should end it. I'm trying really hard to simplify an overwhelming digital life. Help.

I switched over to iCloud a number of months ago. I currently have rules set up in Apple Mail to filter incoming mail into folders. I want these emails but I don't want them in my inbox. The problem is it doesn't work as I anticipated. It would appear if Apple Mail isn't open, the rules won't apply themselves on my iPhone. And even if Apple Mail is open, the rule doesn't apply itself immediately, and my iPhone is pinged, I check my email, and then the email "disappears" into the folder. This is getting really f*cking annoying. [more inside]

How can I be of best use to the world?

I'm looking to change careers and my goal is to be doing "that what is most effective towards helping the world". I asked in a previous question "What is the cause with the most leverage" and since then effective altruism seemed to be the best solution for making a difference on the biggest scale. But if I wanted to help that cause it seems like there's no better way to do it than to make a ton of money. Other than earn a ton of money, I suppose I could try to work for an organization like LifeYouCanSave. But would I be necessarily of greatest help doing that i.e suppose they have all the help they need other than people to donate. I'm not looking for importance or anything. If somehow standing on a corner counting how many red cars go by is the best thing I can be doing for the world, then so be it. I just want to know that I'm being useful.
