My Mac Mini shut off when the powerstrip got unplugged.
Now when I power it on it loads up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" and keeps searching for bluetooth mice - which I don't have any. The Dock is gone and the top white menu bar is only partially painted. [more inside]

My sister is in her late-30s and a single mother of one little girl. She's stuck in an endless series of crummy jobs, severely
dependent on our mother, and she is incredibly defensive and vitriolic about pretty much everything. I'd like to help her somehow. [more inside]

I work for a small non profit who is looking to add a central file server to bring our non existent tech infrastructure out of the stone age. The boss is looking to drop $2,500 on a complete package from DELL, but Im thinking there must be a better and cheaper way to accomplish this. [more inside]

You buy a frozen cheesecake at the natural food store. It doesn't come with directions. You're hungry. Do you eat it frozen? Wait while it thaws on the counter? Heat it up in the microwave? Heat it up in the oven? Something else?

I have a dear pal with a coke habit that has driven him to homelessness. He is not a US-native; he grew up in pre-change Eastern Europe. He does have a green card. He has had trouble hiolding job and appears to have never received training in money-management issues either in the US or at home. I do not want him to die, which he will surely do this year if things do not change. What can I do?

What are the pros/cons of working for Aflac?
I was recently recruited for one of their sales/representative positions. Does anyone out there have any experience either working for the company or as a policy holder? Good/bad? Is this a telemarketing thing?
I have not accepted the position yet or started their training process.
I need the meta to help me. . .

Situation: 16.5 year old son, ripe with hormones. Also ADD & PDD-NOS, as well as depressed, which make him impulsive, resistant to authority, and Not So Good at social cues.
He's sending sexually explicit text messages to a girl, who's apparently willing to go right along. Even if we we permissive [I am, his bio parents aren't] he's not ready for it.
How do we talk to him? [more inside]

I'm stumped by Mozilla extensions. I cannot load any new ones. I get a notification that my settings are "locked," and to EDIT options. I've tried all the obvious things. I've turned on JAVA and everything on or off that I can think of - anything else I'm missing? I remember I once loaded something that allowed me to change some settings in Mozilla by accessing settings in a browser window as text - was it some setting I changed there? [more inside]

Let's assume (no soapbox rants, please!)
global warming is a reality, the ice covering Greenland is melting, and the ocean's levels are rising. If I own a home and land which, according to this map,
would be underwater, what--if anything--would the government do? I live near a major (federal) interstate, two major shipping ports, and a rail corridor linking the two. San Francisco and Oakland International Airports would also be underwater. What happens? Would they build a gigantic dike, like New Orleans and Holland? Is my home and the land on which it's built a total loss? If so, insurance-wise, is this considered an "Act of God"? If I was to put my home on the market tomorrow, must I declare global warming and the rising ocean levels as a possibility for flooding?
