How to heat our home this winter?

Is it worth it to use space heaters (instead of the built-in baseboard heaters) to keep warm this winter? If so, how? [more inside]

Help me stay warm with a broken furnace.

Yesterday I woke up to my furnace screeching like a banshee. Turned it off, and called for service, but they won't be able to get out for a while. I'm not sure when, because the service will be through my home warranty. I have a fireplace and wood, south facing windows that let in lots of sun, and a very small, not-so-awesome electric space heater. I have some questions about the combination of heating sources I should use until the furnace gets repaired. [more inside]

How should I stay warm this winter?

Which is more efficient/economical to run: a baseboard heater or an oil-filled radiator-type space heater? [more inside]

good, small, inexpensive, energy-efficient space heater?

What is a good, small, inexpensive, energy-efficient space heater? Living in a leaky old house, we're starting to dread the approach of our first winter here. All we have is one crappy gas wall heater, this electricity-sucking system on the roof that pumps down solar-heated air, and a fireplace in the bedroom. We need more. (We're already going to seal the windows with plastic where we can.)
