Is Serious Furnace Cleaning Necessary?

I have an old style furnace that has been cleaned (by vacuuming) on a mostly annual basis for about 20 years. Should I pay the big bucks to get it scraped out by a professional? [more inside]

Furnaces Suck!

Whenever I change my furnace filter (approx every 60-90 days), it's always bent inwards towards the furnace fan. It's gotten significantly worse this year, and tonight when I tried to replace it, the filter was nearly sucked into the furnace. What causes this? Do I need to call for service? [more inside]

Steam Heat

I'm about to sign a lease on a commercial space that has radiator heating. At first this seemed logical to me, then I thought about it a bit... [more inside]

Argument heats up!

Help me settle an argument between my parents about central heating, please. My mother believes, for instance, that setting the thermostat for 75 degrees and cutting it off once it reaches 70 degrees will warm the house faster than if the thermostat were simply set to 70 degrees initially. My father thinks this is ridiculous. Who's right? [more inside]

shaken not stirred, sort of

Whirlpool LEQ8000JQ dryer. Tumbles but won't heat up. Tried the factory web site, multiple help lines. I know it's a 240, we have fuses, not circuit breakers. Everything seems fine from the house panel down, I think it's an internal fuse. Hope me hive mind. [more inside]

Help me stay warm with a broken furnace.

Yesterday I woke up to my furnace screeching like a banshee. Turned it off, and called for service, but they won't be able to get out for a while. I'm not sure when, because the service will be through my home warranty. I have a fireplace and wood, south facing windows that let in lots of sun, and a very small, not-so-awesome electric space heater. I have some questions about the combination of heating sources I should use until the furnace gets repaired. [more inside]

How to get my microwave oven to heat again

Why did my microwave oven stop heating after I tried to use it to heat water in a clear pyrex measuring cup? And how can I get it to work again? I've had the not-heating problem before, and it has gone away. I can't remember whether I did something to make it work again. This time, I tried unplugging the oven and plugging it in again -- no dice. Everything works except for the heating up part.
