My "Williams 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Direct-Vent Wall Furnace" is an eyesore and I'd love to build my own custom cover for it, but is that safe? Can I only use metal or can I use wood? I'd have a friend build it since I don't know much about it, but I'm wondering what I can do to hide or replace it. BTW I rent my apartment, so any changes I make should technically be reversible. Link for reference.

It's getting cold, and the heat in our newly-purchased but old house won't turn on. Can you help troubleshoot, or should we just call in a professional? [more inside]

I bought a Takagi Jr tankless heater and was wondering if anyone could help me with getting the right venting for it. I'm going to be venting it through the back wall right into my backyard.

I have an electric space heater that makes a mild burning smell and the fan makes too much noise, any ideas on how an adventurous engineering student might be able to make the unit better than out of the box? [more inside]
